Margo Howard Asks: Can You See The Smoke Coming Out of My Ears?

Editor’s Note: A longtime journalist, Margo Howard went into the family business (her mother was the fabled Ann Landers) in the 1990s as Dear Prudence. Her broad experience and understanding of human nature provide answers for the troubled — and entertainment for everyone else. Click here to read her column on Yahoo!

I know, I know, everybody and their dog is weighing in on Sarah Palin, but I must add to the noise. I am channeling Joan Rivers here, but can we talk? I am going to come right out and say it … and I will say it in English. I think the deal with the kid who is knocked-up is tacky. I have no problem with a 17-year-old getting tripped up with her boyfriend of a year. My problem is with a mother who not only allows it to be breezed around the globe, but who then gets very in-your-face about it, as in, “I dare you to make something of it.”

The conservative fundamentalists who would have raised cane if Chelsea Clinton had gotten herself in a family way at 17 have found a way to pretzel this around so that the family is heroic for not choosing an abortion. And … as if this weren’t enough, the father-to-be, or “sex on skates” as one publication called him, is flown to St. Paul where he is met at the airport by John McCain!

Are these people crazy? It all looks like a reward for, well, never mind. Then, the kid winds up on stage with Palin’s family and he is chewing gum. And … in place of a ring on his ring finger is the tattoo “Bristol.” If you can think of anything more tasteless, do drop me a line. I have about had it with “family values.”

I’m with you, Prudence. This further illustrates that there is a difference between Republican VALUES and the Republican view of everyone else’s. This twist on the unwed pregnancy of a 17 year-old girl hopefully will telecast to voting Americans that the Republican party is going to sell out on anything and everything it ever criticized IF IT HAPPENS TO ONE OF THEM. Americans, regardless of political party affiliation, need to remember (or realize) that a Republican has completly disregarded the Constitution numerous times in order to accomplish his personal “values”. That blatant disregard of the “American way” alone ought to put the scare into Americans. Now the party is taking pride in the fact that a mother (forget a potential Vice President) opting out of abortion instead of opting in to the sexual education of her children is a good value. How can I trust her to pay close attention to what’s going on in my country if she wasn’t aware that HER OWN CHILD had become sexually active and she didn’t take the time and care (like I did) to educate that child on the mature and responsible behavior associated with this new step. So much for social responsiblity, in my opinion. I’m also disgusted that John McCain was able to make his acceptance speech sound as if HE were the “maverick” of CHANGE to loud cheers. Copycat! Do we like copycats?

Okay - everyone. I am leaving this conversation. Okay, okay. I know what you are saying. But if I get any more replies, I am just going to delete them and wait for the next batch after the next conversation. I just knew I shouldn’t have joined the debate. But I did call the feminists hypocrites, didn’t it? So, all’s fair.

Bonnie, please read this! I agree with what you said. If Chelsea had gotten pregnant, IF she had not aborted it, Hillary and Bill would have done everything in their power, as the Palins are doing, to make sure the baby was born as healthy as possible and dealt with the situation as any parents would. The best they knew how. And that Chelsea and whoever the father would be, were closely guarded, yet not kept out of sight. I think the Obama’s audience should listen to what he and his wife are saying, leave the children alone. They are off limits. And Bill Maher? Oh yeah, what an upstanding, outspoken and mean person he is. I’ve watched enough of his shows to know this. Bonnie, don’t back down. Just because some loud mouthed “women” think all they write is law, don’t believe it.

Judy I agree “The children are off limits”! That means MY children are off limits too, so please ask the Republican Party and Ms Palin to keep their hands off my daughter’s right to choose!

I’m only repeating what the almight Obamas have said. Abortion is murder of a child. If you can live with that, so be it.

And I was agreeing, the children are off limits. And while Sarah Palin’s children are off limits I just want to remind her and McCain that mine are off limits too, and they had better keep their hands off my children’s rights.

Then you need to run for office. And I like the way you ignored that ABORTION IS MURDER.

Abortion is a legal right in this country.

And still, it is murder.

Your opinion. And by the way, check out this article from today’s Chicago Tribune, you may find it of interest since the abortion issue sounds near and dear to you: http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/chi-oped0909kmiecsep09,0,…

Read it. What’s worse than Obama’s view, Catholics trying to justify theirs. As before, abortion is murder of a baby, whether 2 million have been saved or 1 has been saved.

I did read it. And I believe in a woman’s right to choose, so there really is no debate here. I don’t presume to change your mind and you won’t change mine. But I am determined you will not take my rights or the rights of my daughter away.

I meant I read it, not that you read it. I figured you already had. That’s all.

read” is one of those words you need to hear to understand the context unless it is put into a full sentance such as “I read it.” Now I know what you meant.

Thanks Judy - I did read your comment. Did someone actually quote Bill Maher? Well, if you gotta find a source for the spiel that has been forthcoming, I guess he will do. Good grief.
