Margo Howard Asks: Can You See The Smoke Coming Out of My Ears?

Editor’s Note: A longtime journalist, Margo Howard went into the family business (her mother was the fabled Ann Landers) in the 1990s as Dear Prudence. Her broad experience and understanding of human nature provide answers for the troubled — and entertainment for everyone else. Click here to read her column on Yahoo!

I know, I know, everybody and their dog is weighing in on Sarah Palin, but I must add to the noise. I am channeling Joan Rivers here, but can we talk? I am going to come right out and say it … and I will say it in English. I think the deal with the kid who is knocked-up is tacky. I have no problem with a 17-year-old getting tripped up with her boyfriend of a year. My problem is with a mother who not only allows it to be breezed around the globe, but who then gets very in-your-face about it, as in, “I dare you to make something of it.”

The conservative fundamentalists who would have raised cane if Chelsea Clinton had gotten herself in a family way at 17 have found a way to pretzel this around so that the family is heroic for not choosing an abortion. And … as if this weren’t enough, the father-to-be, or “sex on skates” as one publication called him, is flown to St. Paul where he is met at the airport by John McCain!

Are these people crazy? It all looks like a reward for, well, never mind. Then, the kid winds up on stage with Palin’s family and he is chewing gum. And … in place of a ring on his ring finger is the tattoo “Bristol.” If you can think of anything more tasteless, do drop me a line. I have about had it with “family values.”

Bonnie!!! AMEN…I AGREE WITH EVERYTHING YOU STATED ABOVE. I have read the posts in here and how harsh they were on you & I wish I wasn’t busy painting my new house, girl I would have been there with you! Our view points are a lot like. I dont like calling myself Republican or Democrate but I have to choose come this November and like you, I will vote McCain/Palin for what you state above.

Thank you C O - It is easy to understand why in many European countries, they have five or more parties and are constantly seeking a coalition to govern. I think it is easier for Americans to side with either one of the two major parties, leaving our options open for cross over voting. So, you are painting your house? What a job that can be! I do not envy you - but good luck.

Listen to these youtube videos…I found them very interesting…Wont find them anywhere else on this site… http://www.youtube.com/swf/l.swf?video_id=4FCNKwHRCQM&rel=1&eurl=&iurl=h… Also, we are done painting each room in our new house! Shew what a job that was with a 2 year old running around. We gave her the kitchen b/c that was already done & a clean paint brush…she was “painting”. It was so adorable!

Bonnie and Kitty Boy, Bonnie and Kitty you both have given me a lot of food for thought today. It has been a long weekend so I will try my best. Kitty, like you, I do not feel I fit into the parameters of either party’s platforms. The parties are being defined by the media as either “Far Right Wing Conservative” or “Far Left Wing Liberal”, whatever happened to the good old solid democrat or republican. I believe the “Far” factions are smaller than people think, but they make most noise and so, as the saying goes, “the squeaky wheel gets the grease”. They get more attention. Many in the middle of those definitions begin to feel that they don’t fit in either party, hence more Independents. The problem with that is we don’t have any party leaders, or real standing as a group, because Independents fill a wide spectrum of beliefs. I, like Bonnie, do not believe in abortion, but I do not believe I have the right to make that decision for other women. Their bodies are their own to decide what they want. It is not for me to impose my beliefs on them. They have a right to decide for themselves. I am not in favor of partial birth abortion. I don’t know what the answer to the health care problem in this country is. It has been impacted by baby boomers getting older and having more physical challenges. Someone has to do something, but I don’t believe that congress has the faintest idea of how to truly solve it. Elizabeth Bennett gives a good reason for a single payer system on either page 6 or 7 of the “McCain’s Acceptance Speech” thread. It makes great sense, except that it would be run by the federal govt. I do not favor giving the federal govt any more power. They are not doing that great with it. The federal govt is so mired in bureucracy, everything gets parsed down to nothing and then passed on back to the citizen to pay more for it. I don’t want a daddy government, and I know the Founding Fathers didn’t either. They let the lobbyists do most of the work. Politico.com has articles every week on what is going on with the lobbyists. It is eye opening. It is almost as if they are the ones that run government. That is totally unacceptable, and earmarks get added after the bills have been voted on by the congress and senate, of course Bush as said that he won’t sign any more bills that get sent to him with earmarks added after it has been voted on. Will the next president be adamant about it. I hope so. I also agree that the states should have more control of what goes on in their states regarding Health Education and Welfare. The more things are turned over to the Feds, the more money we have to pay in Fed taxes. The more bureaucracy the money has to go through, the less outcome in services. If the money stayed in the states, more problems could be solved on a local level, infrastructure issues could be better addressed. The states would be more empowered to create more fertile ground for job growth. I think the less interference with the progress of the state or the individual, the further they can go. After the problems in the market, I believe there has to be some regulatory guidelines for the banks, maybe reinstate the Glass Steagall Act. Bonnie excellent paragraph on taxes, I agree. Being a business owner, and experiencing the weight of taxes for every little thing, is mind boggling. We want to make more jobs for people and grow our business. Before Gov Schwarzenegger was elected our workers comp payment, for a couple of guys was $600-$800 per week, depending on payroll. We could have bought them individual insurance plans for less than that, and saved the rest for them. Now it is half of that, because they really reformed it. There has to be reform. Everyone keeps debating the same old tax plan, it has to be reformed with no new taxes. Americans should be able to vote on congress getting pay raises, and reduce their pay if they don’t perform well. They have privatized social security, but they can’t come up with a solution for social security. They don’t want to. If attention were really put on it it would show that they have been borrowing money from it forever to pay for their projects and earmarks. None of them in Washington know how to budget so just borrow from the people’s social security, because theirs is secure. If congress’ social security was in the general SS fund, they wouldn’t be screwing with it so much. I am tired, have gone on too long, don’t know if I have made sense, but that is my 2 cents.

Frannie Em - You make perfectly good sense. I will be interested to hear what Kitty has to say but it does seem that we have more in common that not. Perhaps I am more of an “Independent” than I thought. Your point about the Social Security Fund is well taken as well as about Lobbyists. Perhaps a Democrat who is reading the thread will add her thoughts of whether she agrees politically with the platform of the Democratic Party or is there some disagreement. It would be interesting to compare all three comments Republican, Independent and Democrat. Since this is Kitty’s project, I won’t suggest to any particular blogger that they take part. But if anyone is cruising by and would join in, that would be fine, I am sure.

Hi Bonnie, It’s very interesting to me that if we had defined ourselves within the parameters of party, we would argue platforms, but after having expressed our opinions, we have much more common ground than not. I have no ownership of this discussion, Bonnie, and welcome anyone’s comments. Speaking for myself only, I am very interested in what other women in my age group are thinking, and love to discuss issues. My preference is to participate in these discussions without name calling, but in your case, I’ll make an exception. I think you’re a smart and articulate.

Kitty, Okay, what do you think about most of the issues stated above? I always appreciate your perspective because you deal with the nuts and bolts that make an economy go - the dollars and cents. How purple are you feeling? I guess there are many purples out here. Elizabeth Bennett and I went through some of our different platforms on the “John McCains Acceptance speech” thread, or was it called WoW reader forum. Anyway, although her stand was for more government involvement, she made several great points. In particular, was that we have much common ground in that none of us want to see unemployment in our economy, people struggling without health insurance, foreclosures, etc. None of us want to see that. That is common ground to start from. I asked her what she thought about solutions. She was great and very forthcoming and did a tremendous post from her viewpoint. It pleased me, because it got down to basics. I would love to hear what Beth Willis has to say on the issues.

Josie, Hi and how are you doing?? The sandbox and garden are not up as of now, and I really needed an “anything political” break especially after reading Bella’s post. I hope the river renewed you and you are back at creating more spectatular pieces.
