Margo Howard Asks: Can You See The Smoke Coming Out of My Ears?

Editor’s Note: A longtime journalist, Margo Howard went into the family business (her mother was the fabled Ann Landers) in the 1990s as Dear Prudence. Her broad experience and understanding of human nature provide answers for the troubled — and entertainment for everyone else. Click here to read her column on Yahoo!

I know, I know, everybody and their dog is weighing in on Sarah Palin, but I must add to the noise. I am channeling Joan Rivers here, but can we talk? I am going to come right out and say it … and I will say it in English. I think the deal with the kid who is knocked-up is tacky. I have no problem with a 17-year-old getting tripped up with her boyfriend of a year. My problem is with a mother who not only allows it to be breezed around the globe, but who then gets very in-your-face about it, as in, “I dare you to make something of it.”

The conservative fundamentalists who would have raised cane if Chelsea Clinton had gotten herself in a family way at 17 have found a way to pretzel this around so that the family is heroic for not choosing an abortion. And … as if this weren’t enough, the father-to-be, or “sex on skates” as one publication called him, is flown to St. Paul where he is met at the airport by John McCain!

Are these people crazy? It all looks like a reward for, well, never mind. Then, the kid winds up on stage with Palin’s family and he is chewing gum. And … in place of a ring on his ring finger is the tattoo “Bristol.” If you can think of anything more tasteless, do drop me a line. I have about had it with “family values.”

Well, what can I say? The answer is probably “nothing,” because my post on this thread has disappeared, as have several other posts I’ve made on other threads on this website. Jeepers, ladies, I’m starting to feel unwanted here.

Jane, Without a doubt accidental if something disappeared. Send Tom, Wow’s Tech Guru an email…am sure it is nothing. You’re not unwanted!

Really? I have never been censored here like I am—or was when I bothered—on fluffpo. This must be a mistake.

Some really good comments here. Thanks for the McCain update, Suzanne. You are so right about Tom Friedman’s book, Diana T. Your comments are right on. I’ve lived in the Washington DC area for 50 years and have watched administrations come and go. In Obama, we now have one of the most intelligent, honorable candidates possible. Perhaps too intelligent, perhaps too honorable for the political marketplace. I hope not. I will certainly work for him.

If we keep talking about these banal subjects, it will keep us from talking about the fact that, by his own admission, McCain has a weakness for economic skills, and we are going into one of the worse economies in years. By Diana T on 09/07/2008 10:05 am” Thank you Diana. I wish there was some way to get a topic started with the introductory article being a comparison of where all of the candidates stand in relation to those of the Bush/Cheney/Rove team on the issues of foreign, economic and environmental policy. We know the last eight years have been a resounding failure for all but the small percentage of the population who have prospered under the Bush/McCain policies and don’t really care about anything or anybody else. I’d like a chance to hear how some of the people on here who say they think McCain’s policies are the best for our future can justify that when the reality of it is right there in front of them. I find it very hard to believe that responsible, intelligent American voters would still think McCain has the right plan if they were aware of the facts of it.

Hi Sherry Here’s a comparison of economic policies http://www.taxpolicycenter.org/UploadedPDF/411750_updated_candidates_sum… Note that the Tax Policy Center is a joint operation of the Brookings Institution and the Urban Institute - both non-partisan organizations.

Interesting that the Democrats have done a great job of empowering McCain and Palin and passed the mantle of “change” over to the mavericks of the Republican party. Obama and Biden are now the same old Democratic line with just lip service to women. First chance they got, they threw threw Hillary under the bus. Thats where they will throw you ladies too, once they are in office. If you are of the feminine gender you don’t count…Today it is obvious that the Democrat party has a real contempt for women. Sarah Palin is today the most powerful woman in America. She has the attention of millions of people, who are listening closely to what she says. Not what her opponents have to say about her, that is just galvinizing lots of people to be more identified with her. Millions of women who both have a career, or work full time at jobs, and raise a family at the same time, are identifying with her. When she is criticized for standing by her family, her daughter, her infant son, millions of American women either are doing the same thing, or have done it. When she is condemned for having attended 5 or even colleges to get a college education, this is familiar to lots of families who had to make the choice of going to a college they could afford. We are talking here about thousands of middle class American women who are represented by Sarah Palin. Her issues are their issues. I just read where Geraldine Ferraro commented that Sarah Palin was the FIRST person to ever publically thank her for blazing the trail for women to run for highest political office. Not one person in the Democrat party ever got around to thanking her for her courage and fortitude. Its just most interesting to me that McCain and Palin represent change we can count on..They will bring a fresh breath of air through a stale Administration, routing out corruption and eliminating earmarks that are a huge waste of taxpayer money. If Obama and Biden win, well we will see you ladies under the bus…Where all those of the feminine gender will all be for the next 4 years.

G T: “We are talking here about thousands of middle class American women who are represented by Sarah Palin.” Make that millions. Over 50% of Hillary’s 18 million votes were from women. At least 5 or 6 million of them were middle class. Thumbs up for your post.

Yes, and most of them have gotten over it and moved in the direction that supports women’s reproductive rights.

Hillary’s voters were FOR national healthcare, FOR the women’s right to choose, FOR equal pay for equal work. FOR reduction in greenhouse gases and FOR less drilling and more investment in alternative energy sources. The McCain / Palin ticket are AGAINST all those things. Hillary supporters voting for McCain because he put a woman as VP are PLAYING THE GENDER CARD, big time. They aren’t voting issues, unless they never cared what Hillary’s issues were in the first place, and were just voting with their ovaries.

McCain/Palin do not represent CHANGE we can count on, but they do represent more of the SAME we can count on. There was not one mention of a change of policy from the Bush years and all the talk about changing washington was blowing smoke up our “you know whats” since McCain is an integral part of the Republican administration which has had control of Washington for years and they can’t just dismiss the mess they’ve made by pretending it wasn’t THEIR party that made it. Palin is not going to attract any Hillary supporters to McCain, in fact she, based upon her polar opposite views than Hillary, is an insult to women. The only Hillary supporters who are going to vote for McCain were going to vote for him BEFORE Palin. The only difference she makes to the ticket is that she’s got the fundamentalists all fired up and thrilled that an anti-choice theocrat is on the ticket.

The thing about Palin is simply what she’s done to McCain—she’s stolen his thunder and frankly I don’t see him recovering any time soon. Poor John, the Repubs screwed over you royally by picking her for you. Now it’s she that’s dominant and frankly I wonder if you still matter lol

Frank— “Now it’s she that’s dominant and frankly I wonder if you still matter lol.” That should have McCainy going off like a Yellowstone Geezer….oops, Geyser. Hope he calls HER a C&%$ on national TV…she wouldn’t go gentle into the dark night like Cindy….it would be Dukes of Hazzard meets WWF. In fact, this is what White House entertainments will be if she gets in: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZWkKrVCSvHk&feature=related So much for Jackie’s dinner for Nobel Laureates, etc. Palin probably thinks a nobel laureate is a big bird—next thought, “Git maw Winchester, son!”
