Margo Howard Asks: Can You See The Smoke Coming Out of My Ears?

Editor’s Note: A longtime journalist, Margo Howard went into the family business (her mother was the fabled Ann Landers) in the 1990s as Dear Prudence. Her broad experience and understanding of human nature provide answers for the troubled — and entertainment for everyone else. Click here to read her column on Yahoo!

I know, I know, everybody and their dog is weighing in on Sarah Palin, but I must add to the noise. I am channeling Joan Rivers here, but can we talk? I am going to come right out and say it … and I will say it in English. I think the deal with the kid who is knocked-up is tacky. I have no problem with a 17-year-old getting tripped up with her boyfriend of a year. My problem is with a mother who not only allows it to be breezed around the globe, but who then gets very in-your-face about it, as in, “I dare you to make something of it.”

The conservative fundamentalists who would have raised cane if Chelsea Clinton had gotten herself in a family way at 17 have found a way to pretzel this around so that the family is heroic for not choosing an abortion. And … as if this weren’t enough, the father-to-be, or “sex on skates” as one publication called him, is flown to St. Paul where he is met at the airport by John McCain!

Are these people crazy? It all looks like a reward for, well, never mind. Then, the kid winds up on stage with Palin’s family and he is chewing gum. And … in place of a ring on his ring finger is the tattoo “Bristol.” If you can think of anything more tasteless, do drop me a line. I have about had it with “family values.”

Well, I guess the Palins will have to get used to in now that they’re on the national public scene. It’s a choice they made.

I agree with you, whatever they decided, they couldn’t win with the public. But what about making a decision that they KNOW would be better for the baby? If they take that poor infant on the campaign trail, we’ll know what’s really more important to them, and it won’t be him.

I had more sense as a 17-year old mother….my husband’s mother would want to babysit him and I would find polite ways of saying no because she believed in leaving a radio on in the baby’s room when he was trying to sleep so he would ‘get used to noise.’ I said why should he get used to noise….when I don’t want to? I turned everything off (meaning dishwasher/washing machine etc as didn’t have a TV on) and read while he napped so he had the peace he deserved. A 17-year old has more sense than this woman. Strangers would want to hold my baby, and I’d hug him to me and say, sorry…no. She has no protective/maternal nature or instincts for the environment, wild animals, the country or even her own little baby. I do not like this woman at all.

When I was a baby and young child, my mother made sure I got used to noise, same as your husband’s mother wanted to do for your baby. It was a service to me, for not panicking at noises, and for being able to sleep in the real world. In the same way, lots of people my mother trusted touched me and held me, so that I find touch a pleasant and unthreatening experience. I’m sorry you imposed your preferences for silence and isolation on your son, and I hope he hasn’t found the real world overwhelming. I know you didn’t know any better.

Watch this video of the real Palin in action….McCain has chosen THIS to be a heartbeat away from the Oval Office. He should be thrown out of office: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QG1vPYbRB7k

hi, suzanne. i want to take this space to advertise the list of books palin wanted to ban. you can see it at www.mugsypeabody.blogspot.com . there are a lot of classics on that list, including webster’s ninth collegiate dictionary. i wish she would spend the next two months reading fahrenheit 451.

the bogus Sarah Palin Banned Book List is almost an exact copy-and-paste reproduction of a generic list of “Books Banned at One Time or Another in the United States” that has been floating around the Internet for years. http://www.lib.fit.edu/pubs/librarydisplays/bannedbooks/website.htm

jen, the list may not be accurate, but sarah palin DID ask the librarian how to ban books and fire her. the community rallied round the librarian, and the firing did not take. that is fact you can take to the bank.

because good families stick together no matter if it is late at night, and no matter if they are 4 months old of course that child will not remember being there and it seems that you would have slammed her the same if the baby wasn’t there saying something like ” where is the baby, she should have better supervision before she becomes pregnant like her oldest daughter” get a life lefty, this isn’t a game, this is that women’s life and her family is a loving one and who in the world are you to dispute that……

Oh, now, Suzanne, you know I’m just one of those liberals. ‘Course now I don’t spoze now’s the time to mention that I too can shoot the wings off a gnat? Which is why I don’t own a gun. Glad you’re on your feet again! We need you!

You’re nice, Mugs.

Mugsy, this is exactly what distressed me about Trig being there. The constant very loud noise and the bright lights can be stressful for an older child, and must be excruciating for an infant with Down Syndrome. On the other hand, if he had been left in the care of a sitter, the family would have been hit hard for that. My decision would have been to be more concerned for the welfare of my child, but they didn’t ask me.
