Margo Howard to Republicans: Don't You People EVER Learn?

Editor’s Note: A longtime journalist, Margo Howard went into the family business (her mother was the fabled Ann Landers) in the 1990s as Dear Prudence. Her broad experience and understanding of human nature provide answers for the troubled — and entertainment for everyone else. Click here to read her column on Yahoo!

Ah yes, he was going to “bring dignity back to the White House.” Instead, he brought Karl Rove, Dick Cheney and half of K Street. Aren’t there any Republicans who are gonna say they’re sorry?

Perhaps not. My take on Republican hopes is not unlike La Rochefoucauld’s view of remarriage: the triumph of hope over experience. According to The New York Times, “a whopping 91 percent of Republicans have a favorable view” of Palin, who is “the runaway favorite when they are asked to rank possible contenders for the party’s 2012 presidential nominee.” Clearly, these people have put their fingers in their ears and gone lalalalala to the 60-plus percent of people who were kindly disposed toward McCain but said they could not vote for him because they felt the lady was in no way ready to assume the presidency, if the need arose.

Meaning no offense to my Republican brethren and sistren, I cannot help but wonder: Don’t you people ever learn? Do you think these polls are made up? Are you not a little bit pleased to look forward to at least four years of hearing a president for whom English is his first language? Do you not take some pride in the fact that we have been mostly (and relatively instantaneously) reinstated in the international community? Can you imagine Barack Obama ever giving a neck massage to Angela Merkel at an economic conference? On whose watch, exactly, do you think we saw the mess of the last eight years unfold?

I, for one, am thrilled that George Bush and co. are soon to head back whence they came. I suspect they might be a little bit thrilled themselves.

Something really telling is that, as of now, there is no interest in a presidential memoir. This is a first in modern times. I mean, all any recent president has needed is “former” after his name and Bob Barnett, and voila! A big deal book contract. This is too bad, in a way, because with no Bush memoir the book he will most be associated with is My Pet Goat.

And just talking about books makes me think of language, and playing with words. I am sorely temped to riff on an old chestnut and say, "Good Riddance to bad RuBush," but that would be rude. Oh, hell, given what we’ve been through, what’s a little rudeness?

Margo, Actually a NYC-UCLA nuerological study proved that Republicans are born not made. It’s a cognitive style that can be discribed as narrow-minded, block-headed, paranoid. They cognitively do not require facts or see the big picture unless it has something to do with maintaining their world in neat boxes, they are highly resistant to change.

Actually, there is a man named Savage who states that democrats/liberals are certifiably insane, mentally ill, if you will. I can add to that description a bit: Mean spirited, selfish, believe that they are correct in all things and all other thinking is wrong. You know, the more I read WOW’S site the more I agree with him.

Savage Nation. Yes I listen to that show and I am a liberal. Ironically, most of the things he talks about is very truthful. I listen to a lot of talk radio be it conservative, progressive during the elections. Overall, I have to say there are a lot of mean spirited liberals out there. I finally realized that from all the emails that I got during the election. It really turned me off! This election had so much media bias. There is no such thing as true journalism anymore. The people got shafted. Even on this website I’ve gotten a lot of negative remarks in regards to me being a pro-life feminist liberal from fellow liberals (NOT from Republicans or Independents) which I find to be very sad. I lived in San Fran and I can see where Savage is coming from. I refuse to be intimidated for making a stand in what I believe in. Maybe I am unlike some liberals because I respect Republicans, Democrats and Independents. People are people. And Socialism NEVER works.

Carma by the sea Every time you use that study as a frame of reference you add more adjectives. It is like the guy that caught the fish and by the 3rd telling of his story the fish goes from a trout to a marlin.

Another great article, Margo. I remember a time when Pet Rocks also had a 91% approval rating.

Dana Jae comments, “[Obama]…you can bask in the knowing that he’s doing this for you…to make your life better….” This is precisely what is wrong with America. This is pointing a finger of blame at others, this is not learning, this is being dependent upon others for your lifestyle and well being. You are expressing an “Obama Welfare” attitude shared by millions of Americans, all across our country. Not only Americans, but also zillions of people around world, who are chanting, “Obama is the Black Messiah!” Our family never has and never will depend on our government for our well being. We take full responsibility for ourselves and expect all others to do the same. We will and are earning our way through life. Screw the government. Our government has never done much of anything for Americans. Obama will not do much of anything. McCain will not do much of anything. Nobody within our dysfunctional government will do much of anything. A majority of Americans are just as dysfunctional. “Oh Glory Be! Obama is gonna send us a welfare check. We are saved!” Mule manure. Margo ironically asks, after four marriages, “Do you people EVER learn?” Heck no. Americans have only learned to be dependent on government handouts. This is disgusting. Americans need to learn to depend on themselves, not our government. …and we need to learn to help other Americans who are having a hard time while holding back our taxpayer support for our dysfunctional government. OT—-Do you mean the Americans that are dependant on hundreds of billlions in goverment handouts like the greedy Wall Street Bankers? Halliburton and it’s no-bid billions in phony war profiteering projects? The rich oil companies that are handed billions in goverment welfare? The mulitnationals and industrial farms that wreck the environment and get government welfare? etc etc etc. I agree…it’s disgusting. And recommend a great book on the topic. Arianna Huffington’s “Pigs at the Trough.”

Oh angry young one. We don’t need government to make us happy and complete…there you are correct. But we do need government in order to maintain peace, maintain our environment and surroundings and not allow greed and corruption to wag a finger in the face of the citizens (as has been occurring for decades now. We need capitalism to work for democracy, not the other way around. So sorry you are so ant-government, my friend. I hope that peace somehow soothes your heart so that you can pass that along to the child you speak of. Take care. I’m off to teach a class and will return to this convo later.

This is to the native American poster who I believe to be a woman, but for some reason is gotten up like Groucho Marx: All I can say to this quote of yours (“Our family never has and never will depend on our government for our well being.”) is this: Excuse me? I beieve it was the government who made many of you casino-owning Americans. And rich ones.

This is your Captain speaking: As you all can feel, we are in a downward spiral and the only hope we have is to Toss the Big 3 out of the aircraft. There should be enough Golden Parachutes that the executive staff will recover nicely. We figure once that dead weight is out of the cabin, and the printing presses are calmed down, we should be able to level this bird off at 1984 levels, what Reaganomics giveth, Reaganomics with a little Bush taketh away. We are sure that those of you with 401Ks will be fine, if you are under 40, and contribute the maximum until the day you retire from here on out. We hope you have enjoyed the party, the hangover should pass in about 12 years. Watch where you land—it’s your ass.
