Margo Howard to Republicans: Don't You People EVER Learn?

Editor’s Note: A longtime journalist, Margo Howard went into the family business (her mother was the fabled Ann Landers) in the 1990s as Dear Prudence. Her broad experience and understanding of human nature provide answers for the troubled — and entertainment for everyone else. Click here to read her column on Yahoo!

Ah yes, he was going to “bring dignity back to the White House.” Instead, he brought Karl Rove, Dick Cheney and half of K Street. Aren’t there any Republicans who are gonna say they’re sorry?

Perhaps not. My take on Republican hopes is not unlike La Rochefoucauld’s view of remarriage: the triumph of hope over experience. According to The New York Times, “a whopping 91 percent of Republicans have a favorable view” of Palin, who is “the runaway favorite when they are asked to rank possible contenders for the party’s 2012 presidential nominee.” Clearly, these people have put their fingers in their ears and gone lalalalala to the 60-plus percent of people who were kindly disposed toward McCain but said they could not vote for him because they felt the lady was in no way ready to assume the presidency, if the need arose.

Meaning no offense to my Republican brethren and sistren, I cannot help but wonder: Don’t you people ever learn? Do you think these polls are made up? Are you not a little bit pleased to look forward to at least four years of hearing a president for whom English is his first language? Do you not take some pride in the fact that we have been mostly (and relatively instantaneously) reinstated in the international community? Can you imagine Barack Obama ever giving a neck massage to Angela Merkel at an economic conference? On whose watch, exactly, do you think we saw the mess of the last eight years unfold?

I, for one, am thrilled that George Bush and co. are soon to head back whence they came. I suspect they might be a little bit thrilled themselves.

Something really telling is that, as of now, there is no interest in a presidential memoir. This is a first in modern times. I mean, all any recent president has needed is “former” after his name and Bob Barnett, and voila! A big deal book contract. This is too bad, in a way, because with no Bush memoir the book he will most be associated with is My Pet Goat.

And just talking about books makes me think of language, and playing with words. I am sorely temped to riff on an old chestnut and say, "Good Riddance to bad RuBush," but that would be rude. Oh, hell, given what we’ve been through, what’s a little rudeness?

Frannie Em: Whether I agree with her (Palin) or not on every issue, she shook things up, and things needed to be shaken up. Do you suppose that’s the problem, that things needed to be shaken up? It’s hard to figure the continual fascination with this woman. I liked her for all the reasons others seem to hate her. Everything about her was non-Washington, non-big-city, non-stuffy-sophistication. Now, the MSM seems to be following her around like a bunch of bullies, laughing and taunting. Why do they keep running her down?

The MSM is “following her around” because she can’t get enough of the camera. She is the same type as those people who will do anything to be on a reality show. *Shudder.*

Marjorie I liken the MSM to children on a tantrum. Just keep screaming until you get your way. They scream in many different ways. Is it a lack of intelligence on their part, or that they do not have the ability to do good journalism and find the important stories that have far ranging impacts on our country? It has turned into such “snarkishness” they just look foolish trying to make someone else look foolish. I also wonder if Alaskan residents look at us as too taken with ourselves? Maybe many of them feel closer to the land and what it takes to live in a very different environment than ours. I don’t know. Where do people think meat comes from? It is from an animal. They have to kill them in order for people to eat them. I haven’t watched the video, so I don’t know what she said, but she is the Governor of all Alaskans, even the turkey producers. I don’t know. Maybe she doesn’t want to do anything in politics except work for Alaska. I guess they believe that she might run for senator in 2010 so they are trying to knock her out of the running now. Isn’t that what MoveON and Huffpo did about two years ago in supporting Hillary, and then they switched to Obama? I think they will continue to try to destroy her. The biggest mistake the right made in ‘04 was to believe they had a mandate to do what they wanted. Egos ran crazy. If the dems believe they have a mandate, which it seems to me they believe that by what they are saying, then we are in for trouble again. I am tired of living in between the reactionary natures of the two parties. Nothing gets solved.

Margo, thank you for your post. For a moment, I enjoyed being a part of the discourse but it’s been usurped by the drudgery of a supposed descendant of the Choctaw Nation and a few angry McCainites who can’t let go. Funny, it feeds perfectly into your post. The “lalalalalala” finger in the ears. I look forward to your next post. cheers,

Well, here it is. Do you think it possible for us to vote the soi-disant Choctaw off the island? The things she is “reminded of” are quiiiiite looooong and tedious. She apparently likes to hear herself type.

Margo, I’ll second that vote. I’ve tired of the self serving Choctawism. That is sure to add fuel to the fire, but I’ll save “her” the trouble, I no longer read any of the rants. Look forward to yours…not only are you provocative, you get right down into the fray with the rest of us…Cheers!

True, M L, whiis why I still read hers. I wonder whether she would prefer I didn’t?!?

I don’t dwell in the negative so we’ll never meet.

What I’ve noticed is when you call her on one of her outrageous statements, either by proving it is wrong or asking for clarification, she doesn’t respond.

Hi Margo The “voice” in question has shared……. well, gloated actually, that it was banned from Obama blog sites during the campaign. So encouraging! Until you can get a ballot printed, may I recommend speed scroll as the best troll antidote available?

Margo I don’t second it. One of her posts was a little gross, but I think it is wrong to inhibit free speech. She is the only one that has brought anything new to many of the threads. Don’t always agree with her, but so what? I don’t care. People don’t have to read her. If they don’t like her just scroll over her statements. Carmel By The Sea has had several incarnations on this site. Her posts have run on for pages. She has taken on several personas at a time, ridiculed people constantly, if she disagreed with you, watch out. (I know I know, I have long posts as well). Carmel, or Suzanne, or Fluffy, or Joan of Arc, or Sporty, or whomever she was, posted the same long posts with many links, over and over and over again on many different threads on many different days, and she was not voted off the island. She attacked people constantly, would post in front of and behind posters conversations to dominate and interrupt them. She had a habit of looking up a person’s former posts, and then would pull out a little tidbit, use it against them like a put down and turn it into a ridicule, yet she continues to parade on the sight. Some people just stopped reading her. Many people just scroll over her. The threads take care of themselves. They naturally evolve. People know who they want to read. I thought everyone was welcome.

Sweet Margo: Do you think it possible for us to vote the soi-disant Choctaw off the island? Why would you want to do that? She is one of the few interesting people left on this dwindling site. If her stories are long and tedious to you, just skip them. Your choice. And frankly, I don’t care if she’s a Choctaw or a Chinaman. Few in this blogosphere portray themselves as they really are… some are dogs, some are children, some are moons, some are flowers… with personalities to match.
