Margo Howard: Thanks, Sandra Bernhard, for the Palin Jokes. Like We Needed This

Editor’s Note: A longtime journalist, Margo Howard went into the family business (her mother was the fabled Ann Landers) in the 1990s as Dear Prudence. Her broad experience and understanding of human nature provide answers for the troubled — and entertainment for everyone else. Click here to read her column on Yahoo!

The never demure and always foul-mouthed Sandra Bernhard is back with her desperate-to-shock apercus.  This go-round was aimed at Sarah Palin – and wound up on You Tube, no less.  One of her shout-outs to Ms. Palin (that I am willing to commit to print) was: "You whore in cheap glasses." Nice, huh? She could not have given a better gift to Republicans and Palin supporters than this vulgar, ridiculous, attention-grabbing pronouncement.  (And I don’t know if Bernhard has her own oil well, but those glasses cost $400.)

I believe the lady with the literally and figuratively big mouth to be for Obama, so how, I am wondering, does she think a rant like hers helps him?  The other side is properly outraged; just look at the comment boards. (And if one were to seriously follow the whore metaphor in this political circumstance, it would be McCain, not Palin, who is the whore.) Meant to shock, crude insults about almost anything or anyone may be fine for nightclubs, but they are landmines in campaigns. Mort Sahl she isn’t.

I do not think Sarah Palin can be faulted for accepting what was offered. The real problem is what she offers, which ain’t much.  Perhaps more disturbing than her near-amateur status is the excitement with which the Republican faithful, not to mention the whack-job churchies, greeted her. When and how did Know-Nothingism make such a comeback? It is unsettling that great numbers of people have become used to so little, and hard to believe that what was a great line on Saturday Night Live (“I can see Russia from my house!”) was Sarah Palin’s actual response when the subject of Russia came up.

McCain’s No. 2 (even though she’s been slipping and calling the ticket "Palin-McCain") strongly suggests that quite a chunk of the country has undergone an intellectual cleansing. That is a bigger problem than Ms. Palin … that and the fact that the lady should have blinked.

Margo - thank you for putting a voice to my reaction to Sandra Bernard’s shock-jock-talk. Bernard has never sought anyone’s respect nor has she ever earned it. Sarah Palin’s own behavior and statements are all we need to understand the kind of politician she is, a person with few scruples and insufficient ability for the job of Vice President. Period. I trust that the more the American public sees of her and listens to her dumbed-down language, the more obvious it will become that she has nothing to offer. I agree with Rita T that McCain “needs to keep one eye on his back,” but if he’s smart, he’ll start taking that precaution now, before the election.

Maurine, I definitely concur about Bernhart but when Margot states, “When and how did Know-Nothingism make such a comeback?” Who is she kidding??? Your candidate with “nada” experience is on the TOP of the ticket; Sarah Palin who has impressive bipartisan executive experience (after all, it will be the executive branch) is on the bottom of the ticket! And once again, I ask….”What are Obama’s qualifications?”

HoBo Economy Thanks Bush-McSame
Daily Kos—whether you like it or not- is rated #9 of the millions of political blogs on the Internet rated by Technorati…..#1 is Huffington Post.—i.e. they have tremendous influence. I think Rush,Coulter, Savage, et al are merde….but that doesn’t alter the fact of their influence. Daily Kos is plenty reliable…..and often is ahead of the MSM on stories.

I am vision-impaired as anyone who has memorized my whole story knows…looks like Peter Pan to me…I don’t get it. No, don’t bother to ‘splain. Some of this is WAY above my humble pay grade, as your candidate would say. I am sticking with the stubborn, well connected old crabby guy and his fresh, smart vp…the heck with the self-impressed fence straddler and tippling Washington retread. Wait—did I type that out loud?

This is a comment in March from the owner: On Mar. 17 2008, Moulitsas stated that Senator Hillary Clinton did not stand for the principles behind The Daily Kos and said Clinton “doesn’t deserve fairness on this site.” He equated the Democratic primary to a “civil war.” Moulitsas noted that if bloggers were dissatisfied, there were plenty of other websites at which to blog. Wow…didn’t realize that the Kos contributed to the fall of our Hillary, but you keep reading it, HoBo!

I think Palin should be compared to both men who are running … I am sitting here right now listening to her at a rally being televised, telling lies about Barack Obama. Why shouldn’t she be discussed? And why is it that Republicans found it perfectly okay to say some of the nastiest things ever about Hillary Clinton and when she complained of sexism was told to suck it up, but it isn’t okay for Democrats to point out that Sarah Palin has zero experience to be Vice President? Why do Republicans have such double standards for their behavior? And lastly, why when they don’t get their ways, do their threaten to pick up their toys and go home, Amy? I find Ann Coulter to be the most offensive woman on the planet, but I came back after the founders here let her post here.

Rita: …when she (Hillary) complained of sexism was told to suck it up, She was told to suck it up by her own party. They wouldn’t even come to her defense. The Democrats beat on her harder than the Republicans ever thought of doing. The Dems did everything possible to manipulate the primary in favor of BHO. …Sarah Palin has zero experience to be Vice President And with zero experience she has more than BHO.
