Sgt. Margaret Herrera Dances With President – Her New Boss

Sgt. Margaret Herrera likely had one of the most memorable moments of her life last night.

The US Army sergeant had a chance to dance with President Barack Obama at the Commander-in-Chief Ball in Washington on Inauguration Day, where members of the armed services were invited to cut into the First Couple’s dance. While First Lady Michelle Obama danced with Marine Sgt. Elidio Guillen, Herrera, a 24-year-old from San Antonio, TX, took the hand of the president.

So, was she nervous?

"No ma’am, I’m a soldier, we handle pressure," Herrera told one reporter, smiling.

And is the president a good dancer?

"Well, he’s my boss now so I am going to say yes," she said. Smart girl.

Her mother, Debra Leal-Herrera, told the San Antonio Express-News that her daughter deployed to Kuwait in 2004 and was on the Armed Forces Inaugural Committee to help coordinate military involvement at the events. She works in Washington and recently took dance lessons, not knowing she’d be chosen to dance with Obama, her mother said. It turns out, those lessons paid off!

I can only imagine the joy she felt. And it was also a wonderful thing for the Obama’s to do too.
