Marlo Thomas: Some Dates With Daddy Are Not OK
In response to: What are your thoughts on father-daughter purity balls?
If a girl today wants to hang on to her virginity, that’s fine. And if she wants to go to a bash to celebrate it (even if the ball is thrown by evangelicals), that’s fine, too. But this is clearly a party she needs to go to alone — or at least not on a date with Daddy. That’s a little creepy to me …

Well Girls,
This is a very busy week but there are two posts, that I’d like to comment upon and this is one of them.
My Dad was special. Perhaps, I’m biased, but he was the best Daddy in the whole world. Ms. Thomas, I remember watching your Dad on television, when I was young and the programs were new. I, "loved," Earl Hagen’s theme style orchestration of, "Danny Boy." [Ooops, off on a tangent.]
How many little girls were taken to the Golden Gloves matches? How many budding teenage girls had Dad act as chauffeur to save their date some money? How many girls saw their Dad with little tears in their eyes, almost falling, on their Wedding Day? How many girls had their Dad tell them, "I don’t care what day or what time. If you need me, call me?" How many girls had their Dad take them to the Ball Park (Offerman Stadium - Buffalo N.Y.) so they could see Satchel Paige pitch and they had an earlier alarm the next morning? How many Dads got up extra early on Sunday, so their, "I can do it, Dad!," girl didn’t get soaking wet delivering the extra heavy Sunday papers? How many girls had their Dad keep silent with criticism when teaching them how to play (Contract) Bridge? How many girls, whose Dad’s, "loved," Westerns let their, "Little Girl," (in High School by now) watch Fred Astaire on television? (Mom loved it, too.). Early in my marriage, how many Dads drove over eight hours through two States, so they could visit their daughter (instead of the telephone) when she was, "Homesick."
How many Dads would go without something so their, "Little Girl," could get a new dress for a, "special date?"
He’s been, "gone," quite a while, now, (Alzheimer’s complications.) but my Dad was so special. He and my Mom are always in my Daily Prayers.
Yes, I was blessed with a great, very special Dad (and Mom, too.)
