Marlo Thomas and 'Newlywed' Husband Phil Donahue's Valentine's Day Plans

Marlo Thomas
Phil and I are newlyweds … 28 years. We always do something sweet, alone on Valentine’s Day. We buy each other gifts that are red. He always gives me one of those mushy, red, satin, heart "For My Wife" kind of valentines. And the best thing about Valentine’s Day? It always comes AFTER football season.

Ah, not a football fan? I mourn the end of football season even more than my husband…I consider this “the dark time” and simply count the days until August 9th…first pre-season game!

I wasn’t sure how to take her football remark, JB. It could be that Phil’s focused heavily on football, or they both are?? I know Marlo likes baseball - or, certainly did back in the day, witness her Dodger comments, and multiple baseball references/scenes on “That Girl”. To that extent, baseball spring training hath arrived! The 60-degree weather in Michigan today surely hints of it, although it was 10-below zero four days ago here. I’m guessing that Phil might be a Bears fan, given his Chicago background. Being a Detroit fan, the Bears have always been a rival, although the Lions have been lousy for decades. I do have one (somewhat) fond memory: sitting in 10-degree wx at the old Soldier Field on Dec. 26, 1993. Erik Kramer led the Lions to a late TD right in front of me, putting Detroit in the playoffs. Uh, I’ll take Wrigley Field and 78-degree wx in July any time.

If football’s not on, then it’s Nascar for me and mine! On the 14th, we will go somewhere to dinner….I pick the place I think he would like best…..then he spends the evening with me in his chair…comfy, warm and fat and happy….Sunday, we spend the day watching the race thats on and hooting and hollering for our faves…then he will take me out to dinner again….somewhere I like this time. And so goes Valentines weekend!

Can’t stand her husband. He makes me sick every time I see his face. I figured that he would be too ‘touchy feely’ to even watch football.

Queenie .
I agree Steve.  He is a white haired demon.

You know, Queenie and Steve, you don’t have to be mean about it.   If you don’t care for someone, just move along to something you do like.
