Marlo Thomas: Hypochondriacs Hold Key to Doctor-Patient Relationships?

Marlo Thomas

I have very good relationships with my doctors. I come from a family of hypochondriacs so a lot of it has to do with constant communication.

I come from a family of hippos….er, hypos, too (just joking about the hippos). At least, two of my half-sisters from opposite sides of the family. Sister ‘A’ made a big to-do to everyone, including the neighbor’s dog, a few years ago about how she had this mysterious sinus illness that no doctor could figure out. She went to the Cleveland Clinic, Mayo Clinic, maybe even the abortion clinic for all I know…and none of the experts could find a single thing wrong with her. Yet she was supposedly getting worse and worse by the day. Right before Christ-mas that year, she sent a note to everyone saying that she had been close to death. Two days later, she showed up at the family Christ-mas party - looking like she could run the decathalon, the absolute picture of health. Obviously, there had been nothing wrong with her (body). Eventually, after a lot of searching, she found a quack who was very willing to tell her what she wanted to hear: that she had some great problem that he miraculously cured. The other half-sister had about 20 surgeries by age 40. If there wasn’t something wrong with her, she manufactured it. When her 3rd husband allegedly broke up with her, she acted like she now had a major nervous breakdown, and thinned out to the point of skin and bones. Her kids - my cousins - tell me that she’s the one who broke it off with the hubby.
