Marlo Thomas Is More Than Just 'That Girl.' On Her Birthday, 10 Things You Must Know About This Fabulous Woman

© Harry Benson

Happy Birthday, Marlo. Join us in wishing That Girl (who is Our Girl) a great today. Here are some facts you may not know about this wOw-er…

1. Marlo Thomas’s favorite quote comes from her father, actor Danny Thomas, who once told her, "I raised you to be a thoroughbred. When thoroughbreds run they wear blinders to keep their eyes focused straight ahead with no distractions, no other horses. They hear the crowd but they don’t listen. They just run their own race. That’s what you have to do. Don’t listen to anyone comparing you to me or to anyone else. You just run your own race."

2. Memphis’s St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital remains one of the most famous children’s hospitals in the United States, and you may not know this, but Marlo Thomas’s actor father actually founded it, and Marlo continues his good work. She’ll tell you all about it in a very special post coming Monday.

3. After their 1980 nuptials, tabloids were constantly claiming that Marlo Thomas and her husband, Phil Donahue, were careening toward divorce. Well, they didn’t – the couple has been happily married for 28 years.

4. Sure, we all remember Marlo from the American television show "That Girl," but did you know she got her big break when director Mike Nichols cast her in a London production of Neil Simon’s "Barefoot in the Park"?

5. Marlo won four Emmy awards, two of which were from the television specials spawned from her classic children’s album, "Free to Be … You and Me," for which she tapped scores of stars to help spread the message of individuality.

6. Marlo spent 12 years at an all-girls Catholic School, and found co-ed college to be riddled with temptations, which explains her abysmal 1.4 GPA during her first semester at USC. Her father was less than pleased, and threatened to send her to Marymount College, another ladies-only institution, if she didn’t improve her marks. The warning worked – Marlo ended that year with a 3.8 GPA, and was even honored as the most-improved student.

7. Speaking of education, Marlo originally studied education at USC, but couldn’t resist the acting bug and spent her post-graduate years making the audition rounds, which brings us to our next Thomas-related factoid …

8. Marlo’s first television special, 1973’s "Acts of Love and Other Comedies," was at the time ABC’s highest-rated comedy special ever.

9. Marlo knows what it takes to be a good actress – knowing how to be a child. "For actors, you have to get back to the way you were as a child, which is to be open about it all; to let it out; to cry and laugh and be surprised and be open and really listen and do all the things that, as we grow up, we don’t do."

10. Marlo isn’t afraid of getting older. As she told wOw pals Mary Wells, Lily Tomlin and Joan Juliet Buck, "When I was younger I didn’t think older women were that pretty. Now I think they’re gorgeous. You start to say, ‘Now wait a minute … you know, this woman is beautiful. And I look good.’" Yes, Marlo, you do!

A very Happy Birthday to you, Marlo. I’ve always loved your work ethic and your decency. You’re a good person who sends out love. Your beautiful inside shows on your timeless outside. I will never forget the episode of Donahue! when you and Mr. Donahue connected right before our eyes. I am not surprised you two have been happily married all these years. You both are an inspiration.

Happy Birthday Ms. Thomas. I met your father years ago when I was a bank officer at Security Pacific National Bank in Beverly Hills CA. If you could speak to him, he would tell you his memory of me was painful because I always ended up stepping on his foot. As you know, your father was a kind and gracious man. In his memory, and because I too attended an all girls Catholic high school as well as USC, I manage to contribute to St. Judes. Our lives have never crossed despite our similar tracks. May you and yours alwasys be blessed! Happy Birthday!

Ah, yes, Marlo - you look DAYUM good! I agree about the “older women,” although I’ve ALWAYS thought they were more beautiful — even when I was a small child. So as far as I am concerned, one more candle on the cake is equal to 10% more beauty, so HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU! And thank you for all that you’ve contributed to the world.

Perhaps others would like to send a gift, large or small, to that wonderful institution the Thomas family is responsible for, St. Jude’s, in honor of Ms. Marlo’s birthday. (You know me! It’s the money, Honey!)…. http://www.stjude.org As it says on the page, Ms. Marlo is on the Today show this week… Oh, happy birthday, Ms. Marlo!!!!

Gianna, the first four seasons of ‘That Girl’ are out on DVD: http://www.shoutfactorystore.com/prod.aspx?pfid=88 . I have them, and the video is crystal clear. I was disappointed Marlo and Billy Persky didn’t do a voice-over narrative on Season-4 like they did on the first three seasons, but it’s still hilarious.

Dear Marlo, A most Happy Birthday to you. I enjoyed you in your Youth and still enjoy you today. I remember the Donahue show where you and Phil feel in love right before the eye’s of the World…………. If they ever do a rerun of that show, they should add special effects with stars exploding all around you. That was really an awesome sight to behold. You are a very special person. Any woman who could win the heart of Phil Donahue has to be a lot more than special…………maybe SPECTACULAR. That’s a good word to describe you. Have a glorious day of love and celebration. I send you tons of love on this the day of your birth.

Marlo, many fond birthday wishes for you on this weekend. May God continue to bless you and your family. You are a great inspiration, a great talent and a great visionary. I’m your biggest fan. But you, me, none of it makes much difference if we can’t step outside of ourselves and think of others. Thank you for your work at St. Jude. I’m just completing a 13-hour work day at WILS/WXLA radio in Lansing. Covered Gov. Granholm’s news conference at the state Capitol today; she just got back home from a Middle East trip to Jordan and Israel, where she discussed alternative-energy strategies. She had to cut the trip short so she could get to D.C. in time to catch a U.S. Senate hearing on the auto-industry crisis. As Granholm pointed out, using the auto industry to jump-start America into the green-energy industry portends so many great things for this country in the future, not the least of which is jobs. Sure, the clowns running the auto companies are shameful, showing up in D.C. in their expensive private jets. And there has to be a lot of oversight and accountability by the Big Three auto executives once Congress approves a compromise bailout package on December 8. But the notion that auto workers are making $28-an-hour, and some of the other nonsense spouted by various Congressmembers, Campbell Brown on CNN, etc., is a joke. They’re paid $14-an-hour nowadays. If that’s too much, then this country’s in real trouble. As Lansing mayor Virg Bernero - who led a contingent of mayors from across the country in lobbying lawmakers in the nation’s capital this week - pointed out, Nissan, Hyundai, et al., don’t have to cover health insurance benefits, they have full governmental support and so on. Why should we be in a race to the bottom? The auto industry is the way to wean the U.S. off from foreign-oil dependence, long-term. In that sense, keeping the Big Three afloat is a national-security imperative. Also, we cannot afford to lose any more manufacturing jobs (400,000 in Michigan since 2000). Cheers, James
