Marlo Thomas 'Prefers Her Homemade Pundits to Any Other'

Marlo Thomas
At home, with Phil and a few friends. This has become something of a tradition in our crowd. I love the immediate feedback from the people I trust. I prefer my homemade pundits to any other.

I’ll be watching at home alone (exciting!). I remember anchoring some election coverages for radio, and field reporting in a couple others. Always a blast. I suspect that long lines at the polls will hold up results for a while; unless McCain wins Florida, Colorado and Pennsylvania, he doesn’t have a shot. The tariffs that caused dozens of steel companies to go out of business during the II-Bush regime should ensure Penn votes blue. Ohio, like Michigan, has lost so many manufacturing & auto jobs, it’s hard to fathom Ohio voting Republican again, but the polls indicate it’s possible. Even though most projections indicate an Obama landslide, significant results from many states won’t be coming in until the wee hours. That’s because of the unusually large turnouts anticipated, and the nicest Election Day weather in decades in the Midwest states, anyway (around 70 degrees). It was quite exciting in 2000 and 2004. I stayed up until about 5 a.m. watching the returns. Michigan came through for the Democrats around 3 a.m. in 2004, making it an incredibly close contest until it became clear that Ohio would tilt Republican, pushing II-Bush over the top.

Marlo, YOU are one of my favorite pundits. In 2000, you announced just before the election that those people, including your husband, who were saying there was no difference between Gore and Bush, were just wrong. Boy, were you ever proven right in the worst way!

Elizabeth….Marlo was also quoted in 2000 as saying that electing George W. Bush would be “very dangerous.” And she - not Phil - was right about Ralph Nader spoiling it for Al Gore that year, although we’re all fans of Nader. It’s just that he showed poor judgment by pulling votes away from Democrats when it was clear it would be coming down to the wire. What Nader should’ve done is drop out after the Democratic Convention in 2000, and ask his voters to support Gore, a la Hillary Clinton doing the same for Barack Obama in 2008.

Oh, Marlo. How would it be? Having Phil Donahue actually IN your living room as the returns came in. Gotta be good. Give him my very best regards, and thank-you again for all the energetic and valuable work you do.
