Marlo Thomas: They Don't Understand Women

Marlo Thomas
I am aghast at the cynicism of this choice. As if Hillary’s voters will go for any woman. Hillary’s constituency (myself being one of them who has now moved to Obama) is not going to vote for a woman who is against choice, against stem cell research and thinks creationism should be taught in schools. They may have chosen a woman but they don’t understand women.

It looks like a pick that says, “see, I chose a woman!!” on McCain’s part. I’m sure it is a move to try to get the women’s vote, but Palin and her stand in my opinion doesn’t deal with the issues and doesn’t touch the needs of families, women, or anyone today.

I think that McCain would do anything including sacrificing the country for a win, it’s like he has a point to prove or something but I sure don’t care what it is, I don’t want to know the murky depths of his psyche! But I also think that he is just another front, like W was, for whomever is actually RUNNING the Republican Party and they forced him to do it… it take Palin or drop out. A better man would have dropped out.

DeB Isn’t that a little of what Obama and the democrat party did to Hillary, they could be sacrificing a win.

I didn’t vote for Hillary. When she lost and Obama won, I assumed just like every nominee before him, Obama was allowed to pick the person he thought he could work best with.

Ha! I was expecting McCain, to select a woman as his VP running mate. Surely, people seen this coming, after Hillary lost the nomination, and especially after McCain, asked why Hillary wasn’t put on Obama’s ticket. I certainly hope McCain, doesn’t assume that just because his running mate has breasts and a vagina, that it will lure disgruntled Hillary supporters. I would hope, Hillary supporters, will be able to see through this obvious “stunt” and be offended by it. Surely, your election is about voting for the party that will better the lives of the American people, and not about the anatomy of a candidate, regardless of the position being offered.

Catherine, based on the woman he chose, it appears the GOP woman pool is pretty shallow.

Hahahah… right DeBurca, most women are too smart to want to be on a ticket with McCain.

Actually, DeB, I would think that the pool is probably quite large, what about Ms Rice? (Opps, she’s not married.) Well, there must be some other women out there, no? And Linda, about “most women are too smart…” - McCain isn’t counting on women’s smarts, but on their indignation about “loosing” Hillary as the first woman President! As DeB’s running conversation with James have been saying, and Obama pointed out last night, it isn’t that McCain doesn’t care, he just doesn’t get it! Now, will someone just explain to me - HOW he thinks this choice is a qualification to be commander in chief over all in this diverse society of ours???

I don’t think Harriet Meirs is doing much between court appearances and Congressional hearings. Lurita Doan is available. There is Carly the roadie.

Seems to me Sen. McCain’s decision was made out of fear. After last night’s Democratic Convention I believe Sen. McCain was afraid of letting Sen. Obama luxuriate in too much limelight. So a day later, on his birthday, McCain announced a choice. Time will tell if his decision was correct or faulty. It sure doesn’t seem well thought out.

LOL DeB and Linda LL. Just wanted to share with you DeB, that my husband couldn’t understand my interest in American politics, UNTIL, he heard Obama’s speech Thursday night. Now he too, sits glued to CNN with me every night. He too, is extremely impressed by Obama’s vision for the country he loves so much.

Shake your husband’s hand for me Catherine! My husband was a Hillary supporter throughout (though he’s not a citizen so he can’t vote) but he said if he had been back in Ireland during this convention, he would have gotten up in the middle of the night (time difference) in order to witness that speech as well as so many others during the convention. We have such quality people in the Democratic Party!

The DNC disrespected and took for granted their millions of women voters, doners and supporters. This is the first time in my life that I am undecided. The democrats could not get the obvious and simple bill passed to undo the ludicrous 180 day statute of limitaions for equal pay issues turned back! Obama says equal pay is important. Words. Laws are hell trying to get them enforced. It has been decades since the first equal pay act was proposed, took years an years to pass and is virtually impossible to enforce. And any legal action requires a horrific personal sacrifice on all fronts of your life. I was forced out 2 weeks ago from my job (I am the sole wage earner for my family) because I am suing my employer for unequal pay and glass ceiling. A real woman breaking the real glass ceiling is action! And that is what we have been fighting for and is so much more than words. I say we support all women’s accomplishments. This woman is bright and hard working and artiiculate and very very likeable. I am in menapuase - choice is not an issue for my generation anymore and the younger women don’t seem to give a hoot and are oblivious to any women’s rights battles and victories. Women’s issues are so much more than the pro-choice and balancing work and family. When I hear those 2 excuses thrown out as women’s issues I want to SCREAM! Women are impacted more than any other group by a down turn in the economy due to unequal pay, lack of opportunity for promotion and being blocked by glass ceilings. And I have to add Nancy Pelosi who has the lowest approval ratings of anyone, with Congress having worse ratingss than Bush and as Speaker she could not get the Equal Pay act passed with a majority of democrats - yet she has time and gaul to write a book about the power of women!! And what issue did she mention that she and her daughter deal with? Well of course, balancing work and family!!! I was so saddened by Hillary Clinton’s loss of the candidacy. She was so brilliant and dynamic and hard working Tuesday night. My support for women isn’t about anyone with a vagina. But there are so many of us talented, brilliant women who are being held down or kicked down and women standing by cheering them on if not participating in the beatings themselves. I never heard of Palin before today- but I am impressed. She truly convinced me she has the true selfless spirit to serve others. Unlike Obama and Michelle who have not dispelled the impression that they are in this for their family, a place in history and his ego.

Kay, you care about equal pay? Both McCain and Palin are against it.
