Marlo Thomas: They Don't Understand Women

Marlo Thomas
I am aghast at the cynicism of this choice. As if Hillary’s voters will go for any woman. Hillary’s constituency (myself being one of them who has now moved to Obama) is not going to vote for a woman who is against choice, against stem cell research and thinks creationism should be taught in schools. They may have chosen a woman but they don’t understand women.

As far as the couple of posts stating that Palin’s move up the ladder of politics is proof that she’s a player, I just heard an Alaskan political analyst on PBS say “To be fair, she has been lucky enough to always be running against very unpopular and sometimes criminal opponents. Senator Biden will be her first quality opponent.”

And James—read Candace’s response—there are many Hillary supporters who feel this way. Obama made a huge blunder not choosing Hillary as VP. I always thought the Dems would win in a landslide with a Clinton/Obama ticket, but I think Obama/Clinton would have at least given the Hillary people the attention they deserved. Now McCain has picked a woman and I agree with Candace and think her comment speaks volumes.

It sickens me that when a woman is finally chosen for an important office in this country, you are making it dirty and cheap. Did it ever occur to you that Gov. Palin’s record on standing up for the people of her state and her known fight against corruption are what made her an excellent choice? Barrack insulted woman by refusing to choose a woman who received 18 million votes because he didn’t think she was good enough. The Democratic Party gave her the shaft because she wasn’t their Golden boy. I find it funny that states who were only allowed half of their votes to count in the primaries now, when endorsing Obama, could have all their votes count now. It’s insulting that the only credit you give to a governor with an 80% approval rating is that she was only chosen because she’s a woman. It is you who is insulting to woman everywhere with a silly and bitter comment like that.

She has been the governor of a state with a smaller population than the city I live iin… and only for 18 months at that! Before that she was the mayor of a town so small I’m surprised it had a mayor. She is in no way fit to be one heartbeat away from the most powerful position in the world. McCain is being careless with this country just to try to win an election.

It sickens me that this move is purely a Karl Rove call to shore up the religious right “base”. It’s insulting not examine how this woman chose to use her position as governor to go after those that don’t agree with her views. Some of us won’t be played for fools again.

You are right Marlo, most men will never understand women….they do not understand themselves.

I haven’t had time to read all of this thread but I’m so glad that Marlo has finally weighed in on this. My immediate reaction when I heard this was insult. Then I remembered one of Barack’s phrases from last night about McCain; “He doesn’t get it”. I still feel insulted, but at least I know why. It’s as if somebody said “OK, if they want a woman, go get a woman.” The saddest and scariest part of this is that there are some who will vote for four more years of autocracy “just because she’s a woman”.

Well, of course those of us in California old enough to remember Governor Raygun saying to us treehuggers in re the redwood forests (oh, thank you Lady Bird, for saving them!), “If you’ve seen one redwood tree, you’ve seen ‘em all.” The Republican hierarchy (who spend their vacation with each other at the Bohemian Grove with a bunch of on-call girlfriends — or maybe just with each other —leaving their wives at home) undoubtedly thinks the same of women. I’m not allowed to say what they would say, but roughly it goes like this…. “In the dark…..”

Kudos to you Mugsy! I thought I was the only one who has a negative opinion of ole Governor Raygun!

Oh, no, TeeZee, I clearly remember when Ronald Reagan decided to close all the mental institutions in California, thus putting on the street a whole population that could not care for themselves. He was a real compassionate guy, so removed from reality that most of us thought he had mental problems long before he became President. The seeds of the present economic disaster were sewn during the Reagan administration, as anyone with half a brain and a few history books knows.

In order to understand why Obama didn’t choose Hillary, we’re missing some very important points. 1. Too many voters still dislike her for her courage to speak her mind, from the “I didn’t stay home to bake cookies” in Bill’s first run (which I as a stay at home Mom LOVED), to her all inclusive look at changing health care as First Lady. Then, some “family orientated” folks still think she should have divorced Bill, real “family” minded, and most were women! I say, good for her on all counts. but … 2. With Hillary in the Senate, she can do lots more for our country by pushing those bills women need forward (with a little help from more Democratic legislators). 3. It is also highly likely, that she’ll be nabbed for a cabinet seat that she can sink her teeth into, like Health & Welfare? Whether we like it or not, this is the system we have, each state chooses how their primaries are run. There are states with caucuses that allow anyone of either party to vote for anyone (no declaration of party), Vote at the Polls during the day then vote again in a caucus, eligibility to vote after only a month or two registration (that you can change every other year or so), and a myriad of other means to vote against your enemy party. And some states allow the delegates to split the vote, some have to throw the majority, no matter how few, to one candidate. And I sure hope someone changes the primary days for next time - so we don’t have a gazillion primaries in one day, like we did this year … We hardly saw anyone this year, since we were in that gazillion!

Sarah Palin is the Dan Quail of ‘08. Again, women are told that they are stupid and care nothing for important issues. Can we even begin to imagine this woman taking over the Presidency if something happened to McCain! This type of choice for VP should never happen again. Women should overwhelmingly vote for Obama/Biden. The message must be sent. Rhona Levy
