Marlo Thomas: They Don't Understand Women

Marlo Thomas
I am aghast at the cynicism of this choice. As if Hillary’s voters will go for any woman. Hillary’s constituency (myself being one of them who has now moved to Obama) is not going to vote for a woman who is against choice, against stem cell research and thinks creationism should be taught in schools. They may have chosen a woman but they don’t understand women.

I posted this same elsewhere and I can’t help but ask it again. Many of you here have made quite astute statements. Here me out: You know something? After reading as many posts on various blogs and seeing that the last couple of days have stirred a constant (and thorough) debate among us people, am I the only one who thinks it’s time to divide these “United” States into one or more countries? I mean, let’s all face it: two elections of 51/49. I can’t live by the thinking and practice of Bush/Cheney nor a McCain/Palin and I shouldn’t have to just because a couple more percent of this HUGE country want to. Let’s just face facts: the religious right-moral majority-“family values”-NRA-corporatocrats should have their own country to spoil. And you Christians who literally use the man’s name in vain because truly you espouse NOTHING of what Christ truly believed in can go live in that country. And the other half of us who do believe in the common good of all people and pass no judgment on people who are different than us (in fact, we embrace differences) and who are pro-choice, pro-gay rights, pro-everything that you don’t believe in, we can have our country too. We can elect an Obama/Biden and you can have your McCain/Palin. As long as we suffer under the moniker known as “United States”, we won’t have what we each want. Never, ever. We simply can’t see eye-to-eye. So, why should I live (as I have the past 8 years) under a government rule that I do not believe represents me? Let’s just get to the hard work of figuring out the separation and be done with it. Read each of your posts and you can see that ONE CENTRAL GOVERNMENT DOES NOT UNITE US. peace to all of you

Dana Yes of course, let’s do that especially after President Lincoln held the country together, and all the men and some women, that died in the civil war? It continues to remain the war where more Americans were killed than any other war. So you want to split because you don’t know how to get along with people? You only have half of a heart? You have never learned the art of understanding, or is it that you just believe it is for others to give to you? You feel judged by them. Maybe they feel judged by you. It wasn’t just the religious right that elected Bush, it was a lot of people that were dissatisfied about Kerry. He wasn’t the candidate they wanted. They wanted someone like Clinton again. Kerry had a lot of strengths, but wasn’t quite the guy they wanted. He didn’t run the race he needed to run. Wouldn’t you say the democrats are running a very different race today?

My first thought after learning about Governor Palin’s qualifications to be vice-president/president was “Why does this remind me of the under-qualified horseman who didn’t have a clue how to do his job, that is, helping New Orleans after Katrina?” What does this say about Senator McCain’s thought processes? Does he think imagery rather than substance is going to win votes?

On a lighter note, to those of you who haven’t seen this yet I am posting it again in the Palin threads to let Pat Buchanan remind us just how great Obama was on Thursday (watch till the end, Olberman’s reaction is so funny!): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0Fru4dZLGA

Harry Reid- Democrat- voted against the equal pay act. Nancy Pelosi cannot even lead her own party and get them on board for the good of the people.

Sarah Palin reminds me of a Harry Truman. He had only a high school education.

I can’t wait to see how this will affect my ##%# CEO’s vote. He is a staunch Republican (made all of his executive managers donate to the republican party) and he is a flaming fundamentalist who believes woman do not belong in leadership posiitons. LOL What irony!

James, telling me I am “spouting off” about equal pay is so insulting. I have been involved in a law suit in federal courts since 2003 - standing up alone against a vindictive automotive CEO and his company (article’s have been written about his horrible management and fear tactics- even in Fortune magazine) I have over $80,000 in legal debt and was “terminated” by this CEO just 2 weeks ago. I had to forgo any severance pay because I refused to sig n his release saying I would drop all legal action and never say any negative word about him, his company or my work experience at American Axle & Mfg. Now mind you, I am the sole support of my family- I have 2 kids in college and had been a single mom without financial support from my ex for years- up until 5 years ago. I am doing a little more than “spouting off” to correct an injustice. We have all kinds of “laws” on the books. No one enforces them. I want to see action - laws are a joke. Most little guys do not have the gutts or wher with all to stand up to “city hall”. What I have had to go through- I cannot see ever even suggesting to someone else to do to try and get justice by having the “laws’ enforced. The U.S. court system is for the rich. My case is at the 6th circuit for appeal and we have no date set for oral arguments. My attorney says it could take years to have have this appeal ruled on. I have been in this now for 5 years. I am struggling - for 5 years- just to get the right for a trial before a jury of my peers. Sandra Day O’Connor (liberal, femal, appointed by democrat) did more harm for women trying to secure equality than even the most conservative supreme court justice. Words are cheap. It is the action that means anything to me anymore. Am I a touch cynical- yes!

Kay Sara I have thought about you often and wondered how your case was going. I am really impressed that you have held your head high through all of this. I am sorry this is happening to you. Hang in there. Great posts here by the way.

Eleanor, well said. Obama and the DNC blew off their women supporters. I have yet to see Obama reach out and try and connect to the women. I also do not want to hear him say he wants equality for women for his 2 daughters. Everything settles back to his immediate family’s well being. His girls will never have to struggle for ecoonic security. they are millionaires and the daughters of prominent black politician (connections). When trying to get a V.P. to state the truth about what he told me when he lied about it to the defense attorneys - I said I wished his 4 daughters well in this world of discrimination. He replied to me, “My daughters will be okay- I have them set up so they won’t have to face this discrimination.”

Candice, I too am a PUMAS and with you. I have been a lifelong Dem. donated money, was on their natioanl steering committee years ago. How thei disrespected their women base and took our support for granted even if they pi#$ on us - outraged me! Like Obama said about the Hillary Democrats “well they will get over it- they have no other choice than us.” That was his response to reaching out and connecting and caring about female voters.

Rhona- what do you actually know about Palin? This kind of judgment when she is an “unknown” is the prejudice so many women face. A pretty face so she is a dingbat bimbo- end of her capabilities and potential. As Hillary says, Shame on you!” Let’s at least learn what Palin is made of. She got an 80% approval ratings from her constituents. !!! BTW- I had been a lifelong democrat. I jst hate to see woman placed in the bimbo category so quickly. Dan Quayle rightly earned his baffoon idiot classification. Let Sarah Palin at least earn respect or disrespect before you write her off.
