Marlo Thomas: They Don't Understand Women

Marlo Thomas
I am aghast at the cynicism of this choice. As if Hillary’s voters will go for any woman. Hillary’s constituency (myself being one of them who has now moved to Obama) is not going to vote for a woman who is against choice, against stem cell research and thinks creationism should be taught in schools. They may have chosen a woman but they don’t understand women.

Kay Sara, Highly impressed with your posts here as well. Hang tough! I had to fight along battle once, even when all the facts were present. It took a few years….But my spirit and tenacity prevailed…Always does! I too felt suprised that My friend James would ever address someone on here with the statement of “spouting off.” If that be the case, then there is more than most doing the same. We all have the right to voice our opinions with out being labled as spouting off, that analogy is insulting and infers one know’s nothing of what they speak. :)

Maybe they do understand us- There was no one like her on the ticket. Hillary supporters will obviously not vote for McCain. I like his choice, I like what she stands for- I would like her if she were a man. She hasn’t been around long enough to be corrupt. She stands for what I believe in. I did not support Hillary. I don’t commend her for standing by her man for her own personal political gain. I would have respected her more if she dumped him. I feel like the Clinton team will say and do what ever is in their own best interest and promotes their own success. Obama appears to be a good man, although his lack of experience is worrisome. I guess we are even.

McCain doesn’t understand what the equal pay issue is - he said we have to tran and educate woman so they can get the higher paying jobs (LOL). He dodged voting against the Equal Pay act last spring. I do not know enough about Palin to know where she stands on this issue. She wants to break the glass ceilings and she knows what “the ol’ boys club” is all about so I doubt that she would be against equal pay. I didn’t say I was voting Republican - I just think we should be fair to this woman ansd see what she is made of before we write her off as a bimbo (because she is attractive???) I also stand by what my earlier point was- words are cheap, laws are not enforcable and the action of a woman breaking the glass ceiling is something to celebrate! I will go for action over words any day.

James, YOu stress that no one knows her. I agree. Yet a lot of bloggers on this site seem to have a huge jump on the press and know her enough to write her off as a bimbo, unqualified, totally irresponsible choice and know where she stands on all of the issues etc. That is what I have a problem with - be fair, listen and learn about her before you write off a female as “unqualified” regardless of her qualifications and even if they are equal to or better than her male comparisons. That is gender bias & discrimination my friends.

Kay, I too am disgusted with both parties and have personally witnessed enough gender bias and discrimination in the workplace to make me sick for a lifetime. That is why I believe we have to examine each candidate closely. Please research Sara Palin for yourself. While she’s done a lot for Alaska, she’s also being investigated for using her office to go after an ex brother in law. That’s just wrong on so many levels.

It’s good to see Marlo is still out there speaking for the best candidate! When I was 17, I met Marlo at George McGovern hdqtrs in Newark, NJ. !! This year I was an alt. delegate for Hillary at the Dallas, TX meeting…but I am an Obama/Biden supporter now. The McCain/Palin ticket will PALIN comparison to Obama/Biden!!! McCain’s choice is a slap in the face to women in general. Since Palin is so underqualified, it tells us that McCain thinks we are so stupid we will vote for her JUST because she is a woman.

How in the blazing hell can voting for the party that wants to take away a woman’s right to choose and a man who has consistently voted against equal pay be voting for equality. He has a woman on the ticket, but personally I don’t consider Palin up to my standards therefore she is not by any stretch my equal. Voting for her isn’t voting for equality unless you happen to be against: - Having the right to choose what is done with your body. - Having AK47s taken out of the hands of street gangs. - Having children taught the reality of science rather than the mythology of a religion in public schools. - Having this country taken out of the hands of the oil, drug, insurance and other corporate and financial industries. - Having living wage jobs in this country to rebuild our real economy. You know, all those other little nuisances called issues. And regarding the crack about all of us being too old to worry about whether or not we can have an abortion, many of us have daughters and granddaughters. Even if we didn’t we’d still care about the equality issue of whether or not a woman should have the right to choose.

I have been a member of the Hilary Clinton Fan Club since 1992. Seriously. I voted for her in the Maryland primary. She did not win. I did not want her chosen for Vice President. Two reasons: ( 1 ) She can be MUCH more powerful and more help to a democratic administration in the Senate. ( 2 ) I am reasonably certain that THREE ( 3 ) vacancies will come up on the Supreme Court during the very first term of the next president. Ergo: I want that president to be Barack Obama and I am CERTAIN he will name Hillary Clinton to the very first vacancy! Think it through.

Tee Zee, I appreciate your feelings. I heard Palin went after her brother-in-law because he was physically abusing her sister.

Mary Lou, Thank you for your kind thoughts and well wishes. I need them. Just as Cheney was the one with expereince and brains in the Bush Whitehouse- and was the one pulling the strings - I fear Obama will have Biden playing the Cheney role and Obama is too green to not rely HEAVILY on Biden. As for McCain- I don’t think he has a clue about women’s issues and he is certainly of the generation of men where men ruled the world and felt that was how it should be. As for Palin- I don’t think she will be too easy to push around. It will be fun to watch all of this play out. I am totally disgusted with the DNC, Mary Lou, for how the took their female supporters for granted.

If the DNC in any way took their female supporters for granted it was in taking for granted it was the issues that those females were supporting not just the gender of the candidate. As a woman who cares about the issues, even though I was disappointed in the way the party treated Hillary, I’ll still support the issues I care about by voting for Obama rather than voting for more of the disaster of the last 8 years. IMO it’s selfish and irresponsible to do otherwise. But then, that’s just me the American.

Thank you, Marlo. Sarah Palin has no respect for or trust in a woman’s right to make decisions about her own body. That alone, makes her selection as McCain’s VP running mate appalling. They have chosen a woman who doesn’t understand other women.

Some of the comments just crack me up. A politician doing something to attract votes……I am aghast. Imagine doing that! Didn’t BO (as I love to refer to him) pick Biden to woo working class voters in Pensylvania….you know the scrappy kid fron Scranton horse****. The thought of women voting for a woman on the ticket because they would like to see a woman succeed. Well those women must be just stupid…….but not black people who are admittedly voting for a black man because of the color of his skin. Whatever you people are smoking I want some!!!

The point, Tracey, is that people (male or female) should vote based on the issues that effect the best interest of this country not out of spite or some misguided sense of loyalty to a political party. Believe it or not, at this time there are interests more important than having an unqualified female on the ticket just because she has a vagina.

Mary Lou, I thought that that may have been the case when I wrote that. A pounding headache kept me from double checking my facts. As a woman, she did more harm to her sisters than the others. When she retired there was a lot of lip service given that we lost a (swing) vote for more liberal issues and musch more conservative judges were being appointed. I would love to confront Sandra Day O’Conner face to face why she made it so impossible for a woman to prove discrimination.
