Marlo Thomas: They Don't Understand Women

Marlo Thomas
I am aghast at the cynicism of this choice. As if Hillary’s voters will go for any woman. Hillary’s constituency (myself being one of them who has now moved to Obama) is not going to vote for a woman who is against choice, against stem cell research and thinks creationism should be taught in schools. They may have chosen a woman but they don’t understand women.

Mitzi, you say that “Criticizing her should be strictly on the issues and clarifying the differences. Putting her down derisively will not play well and be viewed as sexist.” And Judy, I get the feeling you thought I was being insulting. Moi? Insulting? Well, humor is a way of speaking truth to power, but if you don’t find me (or Maureen Dowd) funny, and want to stick to the issues, how about this e-mail making the rounds: * She was elected Alaska’s governor a little over a year and a half ago. Her previous office was mayor of Wasilla, a small town outside Anchorage. She has no foreign policy experience. * Palin is strongly anti-choice, opposing abortion even in the case of rape or incest. * She supported right-wing extremist Pat Buchanan for president in 2000. * Palin thinks creationism should be taught in public schools. * She’s not sure that humans are the cause of climate change. * She’s solidly in line with John McCain’s “Big Oil first” energy policy. She’s pushed hard for more oil drilling and says renewables won’t be ready for years. She also sued the Bush administration for listing polar bears as an endangered species-she was worried it would interfere with more oil drilling and says renewables won’t be ready for years. * How closely did John McCain vet this choice? He met Sarah Palin once at a meeting. They spoke a second time, last Sunday, when he called her about being vice-president. Then he offered her the position. If any of this is NOT true, please let me know. But it seems all too clear, on the issues, that this was an irresponsible and dangerous choice.

Palin will not lure Hillary voters, but Dobson’s Evangelicals will start the cash flowing into McCain campaign and solidify a faltering base.” By mitzi morris on 08/31/2008 2:50 pm Mitzi, according to reports I’ve heard he gained $4 million the next day. I’m betting the biggest share was from big oil rather than evangelicals, but I’m sure the evangelicals did their part. She has no official voting records that apply to anything other than Alaska and Alaska doesn’t live by the same rules that we do. Everything is paid for for them by the oil companies. They own Palin. That’s why she was chosen, other than the fact that she has a vagina and the ignorant reps thought that was all it took. Sadly, the PUMAs are trying to prove them right that all it takes to get a woman’s vote is a vagina on the ticket.

Frannie Em, you are so funny! I can’t believe all of the writers we have in Congress! But especially the Speaker of the House with so many crisis to be working on, supposedly with the job and influence to try to get enough votes together to pass something …anything (other than naming a street after an athlete) and she is writing a book, collecting her Speaker salary. God save us from our leaders. How are you, Frannie? and your son?

Hey Kay I am fine, so is my son. He is back in the USA and we are all happy. Hang in there. I posted on some of the threads and decided it is not the place for me right now. Don’t enjoy it that much. I was excited when Nancy Pelosi became Speaker of the House. I was hoping they would start with corporate greed and clamping down on financial institutions with investigations and hearings in to how they were milking the citizens, and maybe get to avoiding the mortgage meltdown that we have now. Nope! “The dog at my homework excuse” and lets dedicate this or commemorate that? What are they thinking? They are just as dangerous as Bush, but in a passive aggressive way. I say phooey.

Eleanor, I have a cousin with down syndrome. The most loving human being anyone could ever come across. They are a blessing to every family they are born into. Sure there is heartache, health problems- but the love is beyond anything you could imagine. I didn’t see that post you paraphrased and I can only say to that person, they do not have any understanding of the value of a person’s life - it isn’t at all about accomplishing “material” “worldly” acclaim and success. Oh no. Too bad, that blogger is missing so much beauty in others and the world with value judgments as that.

If these PUMAs were any more transparent they wouldn’t exist. Oh for a strong breeze to blow them away like the burst of gas that they are.

I can not belive this. John McCain selected Sarah Palin not because she is a woman, but because she is a brilliant reformer with a record, unlike obama. She has actually done what she has promised, she does not play politics, unlike Obama. To say she was picked because she’s a female, is ignorant. If ANY women was selected, no matter who, you would attempt to make that comment. She is a great pick.

could you please clarify whats she has accomplished? It is on the record that she campaigned for the bridge to nowhere and then said no thank you after she took office because she would be expected to fund it. She allowed the excess drilling that she then said : oh we should give some back to the people which is how she achieved the rebate to her citizens. She promotes drilling of the natural habitat on lands set aside as preserves, has sued the government to remove polar bears from the endangered species list, took the artic wolf off the list and promotes killing them by air, oh and lets not forget wants evolution out of the schools and only creationism taught. She also states that all abortions should be disallowed even if the mother will die, believes that global warming is a hoax and has stated that no other faith other than christianity should be allowed. In her terms in the council and as mayor she had no power to create a budget, plan the town or wield any power greater than a librarian in that city. She has no experience, is unpopular in her own state (read the latest polls), is under investigation for missuse of power and has sued the federal govt becuase they disagree with her. This is the worst pick that John McCain could have made, unless he is trying to through the election like my daughter believes.

Excuse me, Mathew? She doesn’t play politics? Sweetie, best do your homework. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/09/02/AR200809 Politics is what this whole uproar over Palin is about. That is why the Rove team chose her. This whole nomination is about power. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/09/01/AR200809

I watched Mrs. Palin speak several times just to see who she was. I DON’T LIKE HER! Not totally sure why, but she seems to have a confidence about herself that is based on an idealistic, self-righteous misconception about life, self, duty. AWKKK! Don’t think Ms. Palin is real and it scares me half to death to think that it could be possible for her to become president. The lady strikes me as a real ‘ball buster.” Sorry, Ms. Palin, but I don like U. Next!

Hi Frannie Em, Thank you for your support. As for an update - we submitted our brief to the circuit court for an appeal. It was very good and we responded to the defenses blustering response with a very strong reply. They have presented no evidence and keep changing their story which previous cases have been upheld that that is a sign of lying “pretext” is the legal word they use. However, the wheels of justice turn very slowly. We have no oral argument date set yet and I am told other cases pending before this level are pending for years. That is probably why my employere decided to risk forcing me out - didn’t want me being alive and breathing on their property. What really gets to me however is how they give associates benefits materials stating a years worht of severance pay (reduced as time goes on of course) but when it comes to being laid off they whip out this surprise condition to any severance pay - a lengthy release you must first sign or else get $0. Well, since my husband and kids support me in not signing (hope we are doing the right thing) I am losing a lot of severance pay in order to keep my lawsuit alive. My employer also came up with an excuse to not pay me for my remaining vacation days. When I asked for their policy supporting their first heard reason why I cannot be compensated for my untaken vacation - they just retoted “this decision is confirmed” with no supporting document. My only recourse for the severance and the other pay is to start another lawsuit. There are limits to what I can do so they will get away with their abuse of their human resources. They so often say about their human assets/resources “cost walks in on 2 feet”.

Hang in there, Kay. This is such a disgrace. Welcome to the Republican dream of unregulated business, small government, and personal responsibility. I prefer responsible business, effective government, and equal justice - for all. Ever the dreamer…

I’m THRILLED that McCain chose Sarah Palin. Why be aghast? How can you be shocked that a man who votes against equality for women in the workplace chose a young, attractive, conservative woman he admittedly has met once? She wasn’t chosen because of her credentials. She was chosen because she’s ultra-conservative, and she has ovaries.
