Teddy Kennedy and the Last Time I Ever Wore THAT Dress

Mary Wells

The first time I had dinner sitting next to Ted Kennedy, he kept patting my tummy. This was in the very late 60s. He was young and cute and thought of as a bit of a playboy, so most of the guests at the table were not surprised that he was patting the tummy of the lady next to him. I was alarmed, however, as my husband tended to be edgy when cute men made a move, and he would have seen Ted patting my tummy as a move.

So I stood up to get away before my husband noticed familiarity between me and Ted Kennedy —  and Ted turned crimson. “Oh my God, Mary,” he said. "Oh my God. I thought you were pregnant and I was patting the baby!” I was a thin girl but I was wearing one of the crinolines we wore those days and it bunched up in front of me and looked, I guess, like a baby-to-be. Everybody at the table went into spasms of giggles, Ted didn’t know what to do about me so he put his arms around me to give me a friendly hug, my husband appeared and Ted took off like a shot. I never wore that dress again — who wants to look pregnant when they’re not!

he said. “Oh my God. I thought you were pregnant and I was patting the baby!” I Yeah, okay. And I bet he thought you just fell off the turnip truck too! And we all know that you didn’t. Jerk.

Ted has always had a way of putting his foot in his mouth. Thought you were pregnant. Who did he think he was kidding.

Yeah…maybe that was Ted’s way of covering that he was coming on to you Mary. I wouldn’t put much past ol’ Ted.

Is this the same Teddy who asked Mary Jo if she would like to take a little swim in his little ol’ car?

In the 1960s the Kennedy clan acquired baby carriages by the dozen and made being Preggers seem glamorous, cool and fun. Like taking those 50-mile hikes. I was about ten years old and standing in the foyer of a wonderful tea room on Lake Street in Pasadena, with my mother, a darling blonde in a pink Chanel boucle wool suit, white gloves and pearls. She gasped. Later in the car she said, “Never ask that question again. The poor woman wasn’t P.G.!” And I never did.

what?? crinolines?? I was pretty fashion concious in those days, although not in the same category as Mrs Harding Lawrence, but all I remember are straight, simple, ‘shift’ types,,,from the Maisonette at Neimans…Louis Feraud,,,Even the Diors, Norell, Correges , all simple …Ms. Wells, please explain.

Shifts came after crinolines! Like loafers came after saddle shoes. Like straight hair came after “Shirley Temple” curls. Like knee-high socks came after bobby socks. Like bikini underwear came after “spanky pants”. Like eye shadow didn’t even exist in those days. Crinolines and poodle skirts….now that was an era!

the bobby socks etc were in the fifties……along with poodle skirts , crinolines, etc. Ms. Wells said ‘late sixties’….crinolines long gone

My apologies. I was having so much from remembering the 50’s, I didn’t read 60’s. I don’t remember crinolines in the 60’s. Maybe early 60’s. By the 60’s the skirts were climbing higher and higher.

I think this is a very funny story. You both must have been very embarrassed.

Reminds me of Bush giving the German Chancellor an uninvited backrub. “Ms. Manners, white courtesy telephone!”
