Mary Wells: Mrs. McCain Is Pretty but Michelle Obama Is Glorious

Mary Wells

I think Michelle is gloriously 2008 and shouldn’t change. Pretty Mrs. McCain stands still on the side, slightly behind, like so many of the women.
In America’s history, wives of heads of corporations as well as wives of presidents – they barely breathe, they smile demure smiles, we are not supposed to focus on them, but we all register: nice ladies. Mrs. McCain must be cute to know – he had a wide choice. But when a woman is as still as she is you get an idea that he is the general and she marches to his tune.

Hillary’s face is active and expressive and can be dramatic and she has learned a new smile that is big and lovely and somebody new is doing her makeup this year — good for her!!! But Hillary moves like a girls’ basketball coach — back and forth, from an older era. Michelle moves from head to toe, she moves her slim athletic body as if she could jam with the best of them, clicking her fingers. The two of them, Barack and Michelle, use a podium or speech area differently than other political couples.

They move around each other, like a dance routine, and they relate to each other and even touch each other, groovy, feeling free. She makes me feel good. She isn’t scared. She has opinions. He cares about them. They have a dancing marriage that has spirit. Other good marriages in the White House, no matter how glamorous, have been still and typical of the puritanical American past. Some of the male presidents have had secret or not-so-secret affairs. But there was no happy heat that we could see – no strong communication that was obvious to us between the president and his wife. The Obamas look and act like change, like 2008, like good times. I don’t want to lose any of that.

I couldn’t agree more. When they gave each other the knuckle click I had to laugh out loud. It is nice to see a couple that look like they are friends and lovers.

Yes, you kind of know it when you see it, don’t you? If I had an envious bone in my body, I would envy couples who have that obvious ease with one another…Any of us who have experienced that should consider themselves fortunate beyond belief.. I keep thinking the “reply” button is kind of like butting in line for “fronts” but I also couldn’t find the polite place to jump in on Ms. O.. I have just given up trying to find the full-text speech M.O. gave on C-span eaarlier this year…white dress, bad cold, middle school maybe, but it was about how when you think you’re doing right and playing by the rules, aiming at the “bar”, the bar keeps being moved…that part of the gist..So if you can find it, I recommend it to everyone’s attention..It moved me to tears and I pride myself in not being taken in by small, fuzzy animals and/or erstwhile Hallmark moments… And..again..I’m missing the fabulous ladies who’ve gone before..My mother and aunts weeping during the Anita Hill proceedings..thinking they had lived “to see the day’…What would they have thought about this? So, failing to find the C-span speech, I found one that, in light of this site, is terrific…It’s real girly talk at the launch of the Women For Obama crew in Chicago, 4-16-07 on http://www.brightcove.TV..wish that would come up in blue link mode..what am I doing wrong? She is totally relaxed and totally down home and totally accessible…and she hits all the serious licks that she has kept on with through the primary.. I saw Ann Richards’ daughter on TV last night…what a treat… I’m thinking we should be judgemental on only the most substantive issues.. Re: catty…My LLSO, late lamented significant other, gauged every public figure by asking, “How’d you like to have a drink after work with….? Fill in the blank(s) He also grumbled that the airwaves were being taken by dolichocephalic blondes….speaking specifically about Ann Coulter and the Fox Chix…. Yes, I had to look it up again…and yes it might be taken to mean a certain Barbieness.. Let’s just not really go there, what d’ya say? Never mind…We can go there but only in our pajamas between the hours of midnight and 4 a.m.

Given the poem, “Pretty Pastel Ladies” I stashed somewhere on this subject, I am worried a bit about Michelle Obama. It could painfully be that she does need to tone it down a bit just because still, only a small portion, of USA guys can handle or appreciate strong, intelligent women like Michelle. At first, Barack was coming across as henpecked, but they have changed that rhetoric. Nonetheless, she is a strong woman who can and has made it on her own as well as being a black woman. That’s gonna scare a lot a folks — sad, but true. Our goal, I hope, is to get Barack elected as President of the United States of America. She doesn’t need to start wearing aprons — God forbid, but the usual, necessary caution women have been stradled with over centuries may still be in order for very practical reasons.

Mary Doesn’t Mrs. Mc Cain own and run a huge corporation and run a large philanthropic children’s organization? Maybe she stays to the side so as not to step on his toes. Who knows? This kind of conjecture about both of them is odd to me. I like them both, but they are not running for office. Michelle Obama doesn’t want to appear that she runs the show.

No, Mrs. Mc Cain has people run the corporation and count her dividends while she takes her meds and stands very still whenever her general is speaking or trying to remember what to say! Daddy’s girl, all over again. As for Michelle Obama, Let her be whatever she wants to be! She’s got brains and takes the initiative. She did it on her own, now is joined by a man who will surprise us all. What an adventure for both of them. Stop using the term “black woman” as though it is a weapon. Recently, I saw a documentary on Eleanor Roosevelt, remember her! She faced the consequences of an an awful, arranged marriage, and then “did it her way.” I’m worn out by the Hillary petulance. Her former supporters have to face some important issues. Voting for Mc Cain is dangerous and deranged, and those women who have children fighting in this dreadful war should think about that. Let’s get out of Iraq, bring the troops home, balance the budget, and put Bill Clinton and John McCain out to pasture or on another planet. Mc Cain, resting on his reputation as a warrior, would prolong the war, and Bill is just coasting on a lifelong rant (retired too young and is now fundraising to pay his wife’s debts). Give us all a break from these outdated males.

why don’t you read a little history,,,real history, not the A & E channel….maybe you would learn a little about the Roosevelts….and the marriage which was not arranged…your comments about Mrs McCain are petty and mean. you may have trouble typing because of the enourmous chip on your shoulder

Just the fact that when writting about them you use Mrs. McCain and Michelle Obama and Hillary Clinton shows the difference in the women. McCain is very stand-offish from the media, if this is her personality or her husbands we don’t know. But either way, I would rather see someone who is able to show themselves like Michelle and Hillary.

I hate to be catty, and normally avoid it like the flu, but we are talking about potential first ladies here, and I cringe at the thought of 4 years, let alone 8, of looking at Cindy McCain. I’m betting I would like her, because I so admire her work; but pretty she is not. She looks like the wicked witch from the West. Beautiful and expensive wardrobe, most of it much too young for her. Dreadful hair color and hair styles; just not attractive for her face or her age. Just the other day I remarked to a galfriend that I could not BELIEVE this woman has an income of 6 million per year and cannot manage to look more attractive! All in the eye of the beholder, I am sure; and I am almost an octogenarian with tastes that belong to another century!

As long as we’re being catty … I think Cindy probably dresses the way she does (too young, too blonde, too much makeup) because she knows her husband traded his first wife in for a newer model (her!), and perhaps she’s a bit insecure about her own maturing look. I’ve seen this happen over and over with second wives, even those with old codger husbands like John, and it speaks volumes about the values operating within the marriage. Wow. That was really, really catty. It’s just that, I’m so sick of women behaving like arm ornaments!

Susan B - I personally know such a couple and growing old gracefully is not in her vocabulary. I wish I had the money spent on just one of her operations to stay the plump young thing he left his wife for. If it wasn’t so sad it would almost be a fun cartoon.

Girfriend, Both Michelle and Cindy will get makeovers and Vogue photo ops that flatter them. It probably has already happened. Michelle needs to tone down, and Cindy needs to ramp up, but we are not voting for a fashion show or love affair.
