Mary Wells Is Dizzied by the Beauty That Is Vancouver

Mary Wells

As you know, I am in Vancouver. It may be the most beautiful city in the world. Crystal buildings step down to the sea where the boats are, and to the beautiful sea walk that circles the place. All of this is reflected hurly-burly in the sea along with the string of gorgeous crystal-top mountains. Western Canada has been discovered and apartments and houses are being snapped up from early plans when they are presented in Vancouver and Whistler.

Movies are made here – a lot of movies. There is a tinge of Hollywood movie set here and a Cobb salad on a lot of menus. But the many, many, many restaurants in Vancouver serve a lot of very fresh fish – kinds chefs can’t get for you in New York and Chicago. Crystal tower hotels are going up and will be available for the Olympics. The Ritz-Carlton Hotel will be like a slowly turning shaft of light from outer space, so lovely it will make you dizzy.

Click here to see my photos of this beautiful crystal city.

There is more glass in this town than in any single town I have ever seen. Or maybe it is the way Vancouver, surrounded by sea that is calmed by hundreds of small islands, magnifies the brilliance in its glass and turns it into billions of diamonds floating all around you. That is how it appears. I have just arrived and have already found two restaurants you have to make note of even if you never get to Canada. The first is Blue Water Cafe and Raw Bar (Zagat says the fish are still flapping before they reach your table). The second is very smart and has great food, and is called, simply, "C." It looks over Granville Island, where there is a truly fabulous public market. Knowing about them is half the fun. This place is hard for a gypsy like me who never wants to settle down – I keep thinking I should find a little crystal corner to keep.

Hey Mary Canada’s doin’ it ay? They took it nice and slow and the people yipped and yelled and they got themselves a pretty strong social foundation for the folk and now they’re settin’ up house to be the shining light of the Americas.

Be sure Mary to watch their CBC news with Peter at 10 p.m east time and Carol and Evan at 10 a.m. on Sunday —so so excellent, such professionals, and so much U.S. news in debth, and an abundance of international news, —and so little Britany and ‘themselves’ full of ‘themselves. Whole hour at 6 a.m., noon, 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. (if no hockey).

Enjoy the SKY!

My husband and I were in Vancouver in late summer 2004, and were like totally wowed.

Two favorite things, other than the view, the view, the view: the Skye Tower Restaurant, a fabulous place to have a (very expensive) long lunch while seeing this jewel of a city 360°, and the looooong blocks of open market with stuff you’ve never seen before in your Life! Oh, and the panel of silk embroidery at the Dr. Sun Yet Sen House.

We fell in love with Vancouver!

In the mid-seventies, I traveled with my mother to Vancouver as part of our journey along the west coast of the US. We arrived at dusk via the ferry from Washington State. As a young teenager, I was mezmerized by it’s beauty, culture and the friendliness of all we came in contact with! I hope to return one day with my mother.

Great town, Mary; went from a rather provincial burg in the 60’s to what it is now—a world class city and it has a lovely ‘hemp’ festival :-)

Oh Mary,
I’m so pleased to read your report. We Canadians think it’s pretty special, too. Vancouver is our San Francisco, for those of you who may not have yet visited.
Another west coast treat is the ferry ride through the Channel Islands to the provincial capitol of Victoria on Vancouver Island. An internationally known artist/writer friend, referred to Vancouver Island as the Land of The Lotus Eaters. After his first trip to the island, he returned to his home in the Toronto area and sold up everything and moved to the island. That was in the late 60’s & he is still there. (a personal note here, my home in the wilderness of NW Ontario, was purchased from his daughter.)
The Canadian film industry is thriving. Canada can offer the industry highly skilled professionals.
Canada is a huge country, second in size only to China. There are millions of magnificent vistas for every gypsy taste.
Enjoy your stay. Lily

Welcome to Vancouver Mary! Now you know why I live here. It is truly the best place in Canada to live. Sorry about the weather this week though. Normally its much warmer! When the sun shines it is truly one of God’s best creations here! Promise me you will book a dinner at Tojo’s on Broadway. They have the best sushi in the whole world. You will dream of coming back here just to eat there again. Every rock star and actor and film maker and world leader knows this secret! I have taken a few there myself!

If you are going to buy a place do it soon. So far the US housing crisis has not affected us, even though the US is our biggest trade partner. The prices are still rising in Vancouver and after the Olympics they will sky rocket even more because so many more people will “discover” Vancouver.

No other place in the world offers miles of pristine public beaches and skiing in the same community only two hours apart.

Medical care for all, well-managed country in general, second largest country in the world with one tenth the population of the USA. Its an integrated multicultural melting pot that works.

You can walk around safely almost anywhere. Our safe injection sites help take the edge off the drug problem. We do need to work on the homeless problem though. Everyone in crisis across the country moves here because they can live on the streets all year long without freezing to death. That is our greatest shame.

Do try some of our fabulous wines. The interior of BC has fantastic vineyards. Nothing like a great Burrowing Owl.

And if you get homesick, the US border is 40 min. drive south!

Let us know if you are doing a speaking engagement here. I would love to come! Many many famous women come here to speak in our Unique Lives series on stage.

I hope you have the best memories ever to take home with you!

Mary Wells—-whenever the word Vancouver pops up in front of my eyes, I became breathless. Right at this moment I could not find words to describe what I want to say.—- about all the beautiful memories I have in there from January 1990 to December 1991, for 23 months in as Mary described it,” The most beautiful city in the world!” I was fortunate to live next to Stanley Park, in an one-bedroom apartment with two balconies on the 9th floor of a building with an indoor swimming pool, I took many walks around the Sea Wall…. I was invited from New York to go there to design housing and nursing homes, which were built exactly as I designed them. And I danced with many ladies there and dated a few and one time I was engaged to one beautiful lady and we wanted to be married to each other…..” This is my happiest year in my life!”—— I said that to the camcorder once in my High school reunion party when I was in Vancouver……………..dancewu(dot)net

I just sent three paintings I did through E-mail to WOWOWOW. They were all from memory of this beautiful city. One from the top floor of Hotel Vancouver, another two were from the world famous Stanley Park.—-dancewu(dot)net

We were in Vancouver in December. I have a few suggestions for people travelling there with children. Three places not to miss. 1. Vancouver Aquarum www.vancouvermaritimemuseum.com 2. Science World And Omnimax Theatre
At Telus World Of Science http://www.telusworldofscience.com/vancouver 3. The Maritime Museum www.vancouvermaritimemuseum.com
We stayed downtown in a hotel and walked everywhere in the evenings. Great shopping downtown, very clean and safe.

Hey LIZ, Cous! Yes, Rex Murphy. My gawd is that dude excellent. CBC is one of the best things about Canada because you produce real news and real events and real people and not media celebs reporting on Hollywood celebs. You damn Canadians are on top of everything! Scrapplers! I love it. Well you did it slower and made a strong social foundation for your economy to run over and now are buildin’ the little pig’s brick house!

Don’t get caught up in the toys, like we did, and keep scrappling!

I’m watchin’ your BC forests. As a Northeasterner here on the border I’m sure it will spread. Looks like the logging corps are takin’ out more than the diseased lumber, bastards, ay?

That’s a serious mess. Bangladesh and Africa suffered I think from the over loggin’ that China did in Tibet. And I wonder about our Southwest from the over loggin’ we did in Oregon and Washington State. Boy the hip bone is really connected to the leg bone isn’t it?

Do you know Liz if that damn little beetle leaves larve in the soil? On CBC last night the man said it would take 80 to 90 years to grow back. Serious stuff and they are expectin’ it to run all the way to the east coast.

As you’re reaping those credits, watch out for the debits. Follow the money.

I also watch the documentaries on CBC. So so good. We’re impoverished here.

Yes, I love the panel. Wow, not pundits but really intelligent thinking journalists! 5th dimension, certainly. How else would I find out what’s happenin’ here, ay?

What irony that the New American Dream may be Canada instead of the U.S.A. Ahhhh maybe it’ll be both, for all the right reasons. Down under there is some good stuff beginnin’ to happen here. Shhhh, don’t want the govt. to start regulatin’ against the down homer!

Yeh our Canadian cousins, really really watch govt. regulations against small and home grown business right from your hometown all the way up to the feds. Killed us from takin’ care of ourselves.

Worked up there a couple of times. Have eaten at “C.” First place I ever had chrysanthemum tea. Lovely. Also knocked a few balls around the little 9 hole golf course at Stanley Park. Madly dodging enormous Canadian Geese droppings on the fairways.
