Mary Wells's Latest Business Idea

Mary Wells

A clean bathroom, restroom, toilette room is a rare and beautiful thing. The better the restaurant, the worse the bathroom — maybe because there is such turnover. I always want to have my shoes dry-cleaned when I leave. You would think a hair salon would have a clean one, but they are always filled with used sprays and the sinks are not clean. Chanel has some sort of manifesto about washrooms and you stand a good chance of getting a clean one if you can brave the hungry sales staff. The one in Monte Carlo is particularly clean — if you are in Monte Carlo. I would expect Hermès to have perfect washrooms with their abundant quality and prices, so I am going to start checking Hermès washrooms. Hermès! Here I come!

The best one I ever experienced was at Claridges in London. It has a smartly dressed maid off a movie set who makes sure your soap is new, you have a new fresh towel and that the whole place is a grand experience. There is ample space to fuss over your hair. And there is a second room where you can collapse if your love affair is going badly at lunch. I think there is an opportunity here. We should go into business and build small, immaculate washrooms little by little until they are all over town. The signs would be an art form in cleanliness and would say CLEAN SAFE WASHROOM American Express or Visa. Ten dollars a visit. Expensive? Well, OK. What would a clean, safe, germ-free washroom in a handy location be worth to you? Let me know.

My biggest suprise on my first trip to France was the lovely bathrooms.  They cost a small amount (less than you suggest), but as you state…. a clean bathroom when in need is priceless.  On my first trip to Italy, I was appalled at their bathrooms.  I will never forget going to a public toilet near the Piazza del Mercato Vecchioa, standing in line forever and then finding a newly installed "turkish" toilet.  How does that happen?  You can build these incredible buildings over a thousand years ago, yet you cannot install a flushing western toilet?  I had to turn around and leave still in need of relief.  I have never learned how to urinate standing up with clothes on!

$10 is nothing to a RICH person.  For some people it’s the amount of money they spend in a day to feed a family………

Get Real.  Most people are not in the 1%…………

It’s a great idea because it would circulate more of the rich people’s money.  I would spend $5 on a clean restroom.  Many restrooms I had to visit with small children in tow, and I would have gladly paid that much - but not per person.

Maybe you could set it up like the toll booths.  A person could pay each time they go, or buy a pass each year, and use these lovely toilettes whenever the need became apparent.  But it does seem dreadful, making money off a such a basic human need.  Couldn’t we just cover the cost with tax dollars.  Ha!

$10?? I’ll hold it in and explode rather than pay that. Talk about elitist.

I used to trip at the 25 cent stalls of the past.  And they weren’t even clean!  I love the thought of a place like Claridges in London with the attendant and clean accommodations.  I would grin the whole time I was in there.

But I would still use a paper commode liner…

Believe it or not it’s Slade,Ky, I have traveled all over the world and when I leave my home town and have to travel out of the mountains , Slade, Ky is my main pit stop..  Always clean, have never found the ladies room dirty no matter what time.
