The Luxe List: For the Adventurer, the Nester and the Teenager

Mary Wells

Only 9 days until Christmas! wOw’s Gypsy brings you the best of the best for the adventurer, the nester and the teenager …

Adventures and Experiences

If there is a man in your life who doesn’t like “things” under a tree, I have a friend who has had great success giving a weekend in the sexiest hotel suite she can find. Another takes her fella skiing where he has never skied or to Dubai for a weekend. Another takes her husband on a scenic and slightly edgy climb or on a hike along the rocky shores of Italy — where good wine is assured at dinner. Another buys a carefully selected assortment of the great sexy films that are at least ten years old and wraps them exquisitely. I know a woman who buys her husband butter from Charentes Poitou, France, because Gordon Ramsay says it’s the best butter.

There are new folding kayaks made by Folbot that are easily portable, around $1800. And consider the new debit cards for private jet use. Easy to buy — lots of those services around now with lots of prices. One of my dearest friends goes into Tom Ford’s shop on Madison in New York and just sits there for a while. She says she gets a lot of idea there and so far has only bought a tie.

For the Home

You can give a new homeowner a gift certificate to EcoSmart Fire, an Australian company that makes environmentally friendly open fireplaces. There is no flue — you don’t need a chimney and no installation is required and they are fully energy efficient — $2500 and up. You can give a new condo owner small items of furniture anyone could use and that are especially charming: Starck has designed a sleek stainless and teak rocking chair for a small terrace for instance – for Sutherland. And Jakob Wagner has designed the Yo Yo, a small table of curved beech that slips over a chair or sofa seat to hold your glass or cup of tea. It comes hilariously hip in high-gloss white, black, red or gold lacquer or in black matte oak or natural beech varnished. It’s made by Moroso, costs next to nothing, can be carried around with a few fingers and is the useful table no one need live without. I can just see a red one under the tree!

Teen girl

If, like most people, you can’t imagine what to give a 15-year-old woman — feel secure with anything from Juicy Couture! Now there are fragrances — Juicy Couture fragrance for women and Juicy Couture fragrance for men — they may be The Answer for a lot of you at gift time. Taylor Swift’s CDs are good for this group, too. And disco is back with a roar – but that is for all ages! Just as you’ll find something for adult females of all ages in Diane von Fürstenberg’s shop in New York and elsewhere.

The wife of the president of my (then) company rented a Porche convertible for him for a month. He was a pretty conservative guy mostly, so it was a kick seeing him drive to work in that car every day. He seemed to be having so much fun. If I had a significant other in my life, that’s something I’d like to do — on my budget, maybe only rent it for a weekend, though.

Many years ago, my oldest son told me he would be in Germany on leave when his Birthday rolled around. With the help of a friend there, I arranged to rent a Porsche for him. He had dreamed often of driving on the autobahn…he had the car for four days, scared himself only once and decided high speed driving was not really all it was cracked up to be…especially when every driver around you is driving just as fast or faster! Still, he remembers that as one of his all time favorite gifts. Now, he is married, and in the military…so he and his wife LOVE my annual Christmas gift…I give them a weekend at a lovely inn, with champagne and a gourmet dinner included. I do a different inn every year. Its something their budget does not allow, and it is easy for me!

JB What a wonderful idea! My husband loves gifts under the tree as long as it’s NOT a tie. So, each year I try to think of something different. One year I gave him a balloon ride. Granted it was a local flight — but there was some good bubbly - good company and, it was fun looking down on our own house — the local area and the beaches! Another year I got a friend who has old, antique cars to take him out for the day in his “Shelby”. He let him drive. My husband thought he had died and gone to heaven. Another year I sent him to a “cooking school” with Martha Stewart. Again, he was in heaven! He loves to cook. Last year a zany friend of mine combined $$ with me and we sent the guys to a fishing trip in Alaska! Other than the misquitos they had a blast. This year he will receive a plane flight with a “show” pilot who does the loop to loop - upside down flying. Since my husband is a former pilot this one might be a little tame for him. Next year, who knows — the economy in the tank — he might just get that tie!

I looked up the Yo Yo table which costs “next to nothing”. One table ranges from $1,418.00 - $1,738.00 (gold beechwood). Am I missing something here?

My 16 year old daughter considers Juicy a brand for wannabe stylistas with access to too much of their parents’ money. A better choice for her would be a $300 pair of True Religion jeans. CDs? Most teenagers really don’t have any real desire for CDs, they download their music to MP3s. An iTunes gift card with a big balance, perhaps?

Thanks for hunting down the price on those tables DeB! So much for treating myself to one for my grad-school apt. next year! Where’s the gift-list for the rest of us actually living in a recession? I’m a 23 year old recent college grad and while these ideas are all nice they’re all reminders of the $$ disconnect between others and myself.

Caitlin - I believe Ikea sells similiar tables, I have seen them many, many places…perhaps not as “chic” but they serve the same purpose for a reasonable price. You won’t be able to have a Yo-Yo Table…and sadly Caitlin…I won’t be able to take my husband for a weekend in Dubai either…but there is a strong chance I can treat him to lunch at Sonic after our weekly trip to Super Wal-Mart! Merry Christmas!

The best Christmas present my husband and I could get this year, would be to hear my son’s girlfriend say “yes” when he gets down on one knee to propose to her infront of our Christmas tree on Christmas morning.

I will always pick “adventurer” category for we began to search the world for least travelled places early on … and once “hooked” hae never stopped. As the children got to be a bit older adults, they were as excited as we over the faraway. Last year’s Christmas gift to a son was a trip by catamaran in Western Australia to The Kimberley — one of the hardest places in the world to get to — and return. Part was by helicopter when it was the only way to get into the rocks and waterfalls, never touched before. This Christmas it is a gift for a daughter who is well versed in the polar regions also — a long long trip to the Antarctic and beyond. It is fun to see her getting outfitted into polar gear once again — and going to our favorite places in the world.

I would say if you’re going the luxury sweatpants route and your teen is skinny, go with So Low instead of Juicy. Similar price and slightly newer trend, but not as forgiving as Juicy.
