Mary Wells: There Are So Many Reasons Not to Eat

Mary Wells

I am having a hard time as I eat out a lot and don’t trust anybody’s hands. Immigration and travel have introduced new bacteria and viruses everywhere. Now I can’t eat tomatoes and my friends in Europe won’t eat buffalo mozzarella so there goes Caprese salad. I eat little meat but now salmon is disappearing and you get signs in restaurants all over saying that it is and don’t eat it yet you see it on the menu. Anyway, mercury has invaded fish so I eat it a little less frequently. I may go back to Bill Blass’s heavenly meatloaf. I was never sure what was in that. I avoid lettuce except at home and we are into rewashing blueberries and soaking them in lemon juice so we aren’t surprised by spiders. It is a bummer. The worst of it is that I am not losing weight.

I do my treadmill on the boat and walk around every port and the only dessert I eat is a tiny — very tiny — scoop of chocolate chip mint that we make. But I am the same weight. Now even rice feels like I am taking food out of poor children’s mouths. And it seems a lot of things could be used for fuel to lower prices. There are so many reasons not to eat.

We live within a mile of several farms open to the public, so we always have fresh produce, and they are all local people who have been farmers for generations. They sponsor the little league teams. I eat very little, can eat whatever I want, and my weight stays the same at 120. After birthing 6 children, I’m grateful. I just read an article today that said weight also has to do with seratonin levels, not simply what you eat. I wish they’d hurry and figure it out so it will help my poor husband who has put on weight since we were married 25 years ago - and really works hard to get it off. Some things just aren’t fair.

As much as I love to grocery shop and cook, I cannot, for the life of me, imagine being so worried about every little food alert. Not ALL tomato varieties are tainted! One does not have to eat buffalo mozzarella…there are others that are just fine. Life is just too damn short to worry about this sort of thing! Or, as we southern cooks know…when in doubt…DEEP FRY IT! Can’t imagine any old bacteria etc. surviving my deep fryer! Oh, and no organic for me..I’ve always said I believe organic is latin for “Costs twice as much!”
