Mary Wells Reports to wOw From Europe on November 4

Mary Wells
I will be in Europe. I am almost always there for presidential elections even though it is much more interesting and exciting to be in the United States and feel you are part of elections. In Europe people assume I know every intimate thing about U.S. candidates and some of their questions are hilarious but they truly care about and relate to the results.

Oh, Sibelle! What a wonderful way to live! I just want to walk into St. Stephen’s…just once. And the Burgtheatre. Haydn was a boy soprano in the St. Stephen’s choir. Did you know that? And I’d love to see what’s happened to the Prater since Brahms hiked around on it, day after day. There are so many landmarks of music history in Vienna. Maybe someday.

Ms Dee, no i didn’t know that. The Burg Theater is one of the oldest playhouses in Europe with the Comedie Francaise in Paris. I hope someday you go. Have a nice day, say hi to Henry!

Mozart conducted at The Burg Theater. Hung out with the singers. I think Cosi fan tutti premiered there. And Beethoven’s Pastorale Symphony, I think. WWII destroyed the opera house that Mahler ran, but I hear the new one is fabulous. Keep your fingers crossed for me. I’d be happy as a clam in Vienna.

That was my experience with Ireland. The people are so informed and so interested in this election. I meet more Americans who are less informed and more apathetic. I was in Ireland for the 2000 election and couldn’t believe how that felt. They were shocked over there too… that an American election could end up like some election in a 3rd world country. I am praying we have a clear winner tonight, hopefully Obama.

Europe’s a big place, Mary. I hope you’ll grace us with specifics in another photo essay. I’d love to see Vienna. I can only wonder if I ever will. I just hope you’ll keep taking us with you wherever you go.
