Mary Wells: Topping It All Off With Hermès, Vuitton and More

Mary Wells

Only 13 days until Christmas! wOw’s Gypsy brings you the best of the best in accessories and fragrances …

Accessories

Nancy Williams, the manager of Louis Vuitton in Vancouver, told me Louis’s big colors for handbags these holidays are cassis, purple, red and gleaming patent brown – and silver and gold. I would hire Nancy Williams to run all my stores if I were Louis. She has “it.” “It” is very hard to find. She also said that she sells a lot of Louis’s jeweled dingle dangles to hang on her bags as they are doing everywhere else in the world that Louis has settled. Hermès  has its own dangle, but  they call it their pom pom. It’s soft. They also have — believe it or not — a new “Kelly Long.” It’s in leather so it is not all that expensive — but it is a “Kelly” so it is not a casual purchase. And they have a modestly priced bull’s-eye canvas and leather bag I bought for myself for Christmas and hid away until this month. I just couldn’t say no.

Click here for photos of the best of the best in accessories and fragrances.

Chanel just came out with a stunner: a black patent bag covered in silver circles in a way that is smoother and more sophisticated than most silver decorated bags. I predict it will sell out – boom!

You can buy dingle dangles and pom poms without buying bags — and that is a hip inexpensive gift idea for sprucing up the bags you gave as gifts last year.

Scarves have become art. Sometimes they are a thrill. And they are all over the world at all prices. I limited myself to Hermès scarves because my computer can’t handle the flood of them this year. I wanted to frame them all! What a good way to give art to someone this year.

Fragrances

Finally, today, I must tell you about what is happening in the fragrance world. Because it is dividing into two different worlds for both men and for women. There is the world in which women choose a sensuous, provocative, exciting fragrance that is especially lovely in a horizontal atmosphere and in which men choose rich, stirring, clearly masculine fragrance.

There is a newer world in which men and women prefer lighter, cooler, more unusual fragrances that suggest surprise and adventure and laughter and freedom of spirit.

There is no law that I know of that says you must choose which world you will be in. You can leap or slither back and forth. But it is wise to wear a fragrance that signals what is going on in your unconscious at the time. I have experienced a lot of fragrances for this report and I roped in a batch of friends. I think it is true to say we can’t smell anything very well at the moment – we are fragrance drunk – but we know it will pass. We had reports from the stores but we needed to know which was which to give you our opinions of what is the best of the best fragrances of Christmas 2008. We are only reporting on fragrances we all really like. But they are each unique. They do, however, fall into the classifications above.

For women’s sensuous world we like Tom Ford’s Black Orchid and his new White Patchouli, Prada’s Infusion d’Iris, Dolce & Gabbana The One, Fendi Palazzo and Estée Lauder Sensuous — although there was some disagreement about Sensuous not really being sensuous.

For the masculine world we like Tom Ford For Men, Gucci Pour Homme, F by Ferragamo, Creed Virgin Island Water and Euphoria by Calvin Klein.

15-20 years ago, my sister gave me a 36” Hermes scarf that I treasure and wear often. It is in lovely shades of gray, taupe and gold. Scarves are a wonderful way to accessorize. I did check the USA Hermes site, and the base price for their silk scarves is $375. As for the bags, I am not sure what you consider “modestly priced”, Mary, but I went to Bluefly, and most of the Hermes canvas/leather bags, even with discount, are running in the $1000+ range. That is not a modest price in my world. I paid $175 for an Aigner bag this autumn, and that was as steep as I can go. But, my dad taught me a lesson I’ve used from youth: Get very familiar with the very best. Then, you can have quality pieces when you find well made ones in a modest price range. If you know what the attributes of a Chanel or a Hermes are, then find the very best you can afford that resemble the Look. Go for Classic Design and Simple, Elegant Detail. Do not purchase fad fashion. Instead of buying lots of cheap pieces, spend the same amount of money on one Very Good Piece, and you will have it for years. And, if you stick to the classics, then a good accessory can make the design timeless.

It doesn’t cost a penny to read about these gorgeous items, and I thank Mary Wells for letting us “window shop” with her!

Ah, Mary, Dolce & Gabbana, my favorite fragrance — glad to hear about “The One”. Something to put on my Christmas list. My husband bought me my first bottle a few years ago — (can’t remember the name) — now, it’s an every year gift. He loves the way it smells. And, he’s not allergic to it! So many of the others really give his allergy fits! I also have a Hermes purse that could probably be considered an “antique”. I paid dearly for it about five years ago — it is still wonderful. I still get compliments on that bag. It has a few battle scars. I firmly believe, that in most cases, the more you invest in something good, expensive and wonderful it will be in style forever and will last you forever.

If you become familiar with the classics, as Diane said, you can spot them anywhere…I have bought beautiful, never worn designer items at Goodwill and the Salvation Army…its my favorite “rainy day” past time, treasure hunting! I have a Prada purse I paid 3.00 for, and a pair of designer ballerina flats that cost me 1.25! My favorite suit is made up of a Jones New York Jacket, Ralph Lauren wide leg trousers and shirt…total cost at Goodwill? 12.00!! I always get compliments on it when I wear it! Oh, and because I have an “eye” for jewelry…I cannot tell you how many gorgeous antique pieces I have found at Goodwill and the Salvation Army.

We have many consignments here in Lexington, but 3 are particularly fine. I bought a Prada turtle neck for $10 last year, and I will look for some good skirts after Christmas. Even my most wealthy friends go there to find their gowns for formal occasions. And, I bet they are doing a booming business here at holiday time, what with the economy.

I found a pair of Stuart Weitzman loafer style pumps at a goodwill style store for $14.99. They are mint condition patent leather.

Thank you Mary for the beautiful items you chose. A touch of frivolity always helps in difficult times. I also discovered that I’m the happy owner of a “long Kelly” in the same red hue, only difference is that I bought it in my hometown of Buenos Aires 10 years ago!!!! It still is one of my favourite bags ever. So I’ll tip you off, check this site www.peterkent.com.ar or www.peterkenthandbags.com for shops in the USA representing his line. They make beautiful classic handbags, top quality (including pom poms & dangles!!!) for half the price of Hermes. You are all welcome!!!

I love Tom Ford’s White Patchouli. And for men this year is, Armani “Diamonds” This one will knock your socks off! I picked this up earlier this year for my hubby and he is totally hooked on it, so am I, he smells devine! I’m not one for the florals and Marc Jacobs daisy is a pretty fragrance but it remains heavy, even after the the dry down. Now Viktor and Rolf’s “Flowerbomb” is very strong initially, yet the dry down on it is akin to a baby powdery softness, that is exquisite. Did not go gaga over “Sensuous” by Lauder, it did not have staying power IMO.

I like single note fragrances like L’Occitane have. They did a fab green tea one. Also, Jo Malone’s are great. I suspect those Hermes ones are similar to Jo Malone’s. Love to try them.

My favorite fragrance is Fracas by Robert Piguet. It is still as timeless as ever. My 2nd favorite fragrance is Carolina Herrera’s Carolina Herrera.
