Mary Wells: wOw Keeps Me From Reading

Mary Wells
wOw wants me to write pieces with pictures no less and I am also supposed to send answers to questions that invade my life and reveal themselves everywhere, in the popcorn, in the salad, in my telephone bills. I used to read myself to sleep nights but since wOw I go to sleep pondering answers to what will happen to Hillary now, for God’s sake — and now what do I think about Saddam’s weapons of mass destruction — and what will happen if my granddaughter wears a nose ring to school — and what did happen to good old Bill Clinton for heaven’s sake — and are there really angels and is Tom Cruise one — and on and on. I know I have read books because I have piles of them next to my bed and all have corners turned down but obviously none of them got to my psyche. Next year.

Mary Wells, like you, the sheer variety of topics in WOW has begun to stir my mind in ways I can’t believe. I probably have revealed more of myself than I should in responding as many have made me look backward, bringing up memories of childhood and young love that have obviously been not seen the light of day for eons. I find it good, and often dinner table conversations have taken a new turn when I have turned the questions onto others. Fascinating stories have resulted - a WOW plus that hasn’t been talked about. I know what you mean. There are so many hours in the day — and something(s) got to give. The choices we make — but you and I know that we don’t do it unless it is compelling, challenging and just plain FUN!

That’s why I use my real name on my posts: what’s good for the goose is good for the gander. I enjoy being an open book.

Mary, I can certainly relate to your last message. Since wOw I have been spending lots of time at my computer. I guess you could say I’m addicted. I thoroughly enjoy the comments from your highly intelligent contributors. However, since I am retired, I still squeeze in time for books.I lead a book group and have to find the time to complete one book a month. I also read other books in between.I appreciate the book suggestions…keep them coming!

Mary, Wowowow has absorbed , as if drawing up droplets of time, parts of each day. It has been pleasant. Hearing differences of opinions well stated, and life-views spoken, are enlightening to me. Due to several of the women suggesting that Ann Karinina was a favorite book, I asked my son for this for my birthday. Just finished reading it. My college courses were filled with lab sciences of biochemistry, biology, neurochemistry, microbiology and so forth,…. and so I missed all the great literature courses of a liberal arts education. My limited understanding of Tolstoy’s book is this: loved the discussion on the politics, segmented society, religion, agricultural methods and the changing social stratum. The plot of the characters seemed to be a frame upon which these insights were draped. How could he have written such a modern book in 1870’s? Thank you wowowow for this gift of suggesting this book.
