Matthews "Threatened" By Clinton, Says Psychologist

Chris Matthews made headlines yesterday after a commuter spread word that the MSNBC anchor had even more unkind words about Hillary Clinton; like that she would use a potential Secretary of State position simply to build her own power base. It would be "Machiavellian," Matthews allegedly said.

Matthews was also criticized during the campaign for his alleged adoration of President-elect Obama and dubious remarks about Senator Clinton, which led many to believe that he simply hated women. Well, it’s more complicated than that, says New York-based clinical psychologist Deborah Goldstein. According to her, Clinton simply doesn’t "excite" Matthews, who finds her more threatening than anything else. Goldstein writes to the New York Post:

Matthews is extremely threatened by Hillary Clinton and powerful women in general. He is not gay, but the guy is not interested in women, they don’t excite him or send tingles up his leg.

Once during the primaries, he was showing footage of Barack Obama and John Edwards strutting around a stage together, and Matthews … exclaimed, ‘Look at the physicality of them!’ Guys are his thing politically, and I believe that unconsciously (or not) he fears that a strong woman like Hillary has the power to make him a castrata.

In addition to being a term for a castrated male - a common among men who fear powerful women - Goldstein’s "castrata" remarks refers to the pundits’ likening of Clinton’s male backers as "castratos in a eunuch chorus."

I am crazy about Chris Matthews and want to throw up at reading of some faction wanting to color him nasty and bring him down. Hey, Clique of Mean Girls, call off your dogs! This is a really decent guy. He was, is and will be entitled to, as are we all, his team to root FOR. Leave him alone.

Chris Matthews was on Jay Leno the other night and was questioned extensively about that bias. He admitted to it with complete candor, explaining that when he met Barack Obama, he had never been so impressed with anyone as he was this Senator and he was completely sold on him being the man this country needs at this time to lead us out of the place we are now. Which is a horrible darkness of the soul. America needs to emerge into the light of Promise and Joy. Matthews is not anti-Hillary; he is pro-Obama. I have been a fan of Hillary Clinton’s since 1992 and have the cancelled checks from paying dues into the fan club that was formed for her in that year in Reston, Virginia to prove it. I adore her, and HOPE she wants and will get the Supreme Court. For President, I voted for her in the primary and then turned to Obama. There is just no helpful utility in bitterness and vitriol. Chris Matthews is totally without guile. Oh, and he Adores his wife and children! Has a very happy marriage!

He is not gay, but the guy is not interested in women, they don’t excite him or send tingles up his leg.” lol I know that his wife is a high powered and successful woman in her own right - and they have a few children. If the psychologist is correct that would make Kathleen Matthews one hell of a woman - she ought to bottle it! My opinion is that Chris Matthews ought to have kept his bias from showing because his adoration of B. Obama made him quite uninformative and unappealing to watch. Is he a journalist or a talk show host?

This is a bizarre pop psychology piece.. ? And I have no feelings about the guy one way or another. But diagnosising someone publicly as afraid of being castrated and being asexual? What the hell?

I’m with you, Kelly. So what if he’s biased? That’s certainly no revelation. And who cares why? Everyone has their buttons, and Matthews is no different. He is a talk show host, not a journalist. Those who can’t recognize that need a shrink themselves. lol Matthews has strong opinions, like most of us here, but he also has a huge public forum on which to air his views. He can’t be any worse than Rush or Bill-O. I was listening to him the other day, while he was going on and on about the US auto industry and how we must rescue it because of the cultural legacy it represented to us boomers. Puleese. Not a good reason, Chris … but you say what you need to say, and they’ll keep paying you for it.

I agree with Goldstein… it was so glaringly apparent, this man love so many male pundits, reporters and anchors showed during the election, and continue to do so. Matthews isn’t the only one.

You’re Mathews is not the only one, that Keith Overthetop guy is another one. Very bias and way too liberal to be on the channel.

I happen to like Chris Matthews….the problem with the ‘diagnosis’ by Goldstein, is that is was done from ‘afar’….Had Matthews been a client, she could not have made the statement. Just knowing that she has nothing more than what she sees’ while Matthews is on the air, to make this ‘observation’, makes this statement less credible. I have never felt that Matthews is ‘afraid of’ or holds disdain for powerful women—but I do see, from watching him, that he is passionate about his observations—-and he tends to reflect that passion in his statements…and I have seen that passion expressed for both men and women….not just women. BTW, he was stationed outside, with the filming crew, for one of the campaign events, and his wife stopped by to speak with him…she stood on the sidelines during the show waiting for a break, and he asked her to come into camera view while he was on the air—-he completely melted for her—-it was obvious that he was happy to see her ALL THE TIME! and even his on-air persona seemed to change —- There are a lot of people, men and women, who have reservations about Hillary—-not because she is a woman…but because of some of the things that have been reported, she is to have done, and covered up—-and because of the way she has treated people when they disagree with her, and because of her ease in making some ‘mis-statements’ during her campaign. There are many men, that Matthews has shown dis-like for too…and I will BET that I could get rich, if all readers on this board, gave me $1 for every time they made a passionate negative statement about someone!.

Everybody has a right to their opinion, but on this one I’m not so sure. I just don’t see it, and I can smell a sexist pig a mile away. Chris Matthews definitely has one of those personalities that you either love or hate, no gray area. So I can’t tell if all the hoopla is an off-shoot of people who simply don’t like him or if there is something to what is being said. I like him and agree with him most of the time so I just don’t see the women hating angle.

It’s the Chris Matthew’s show. If he’s enthused with Obama, he has the right to show it. It’s his show. I’m hesitant about Hillary being Sec of State because her loyalties are with the Republicans. You see, the reason Hillary did not become the Democratic nominee for president was not because men won’t vote for her. It was because of her voting record in the Senate & because of what Bill did as president, with her voiced approval all along the way. Hillary could not spin-doctor the fact that she voted right along with Bush & the Republicans on almost every single issue. She’s a closet Republican—& was supposed to be the Dem nominee as part of the Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton dynasty the Repubs had planned. That’s why Karl Rove wrote all those columns supporting Hillary—because the Repubs wanted her for pres since they figured it would be tough getting ANY Repub elected—they stole 6 million votes this election per the election watchdog websites—but it was in states to get senatorial seats so the Dems won’t have a filibuster-proof reign under Obama. The Sec of State is supposed to follow the plan of the president in regard to foreign affairs—-but I seriously doubt she can be trusted to broker the deals Obama wants & not just do what the Repubs want when she’s oversees & away from Obama’s scrutiny. I don’t trust her—plus, she could make Obama look bad—it would further her own desire to be president in 2012. I would not put it past her.
