McCain Camp: Obama Owes Palin Apology for Lipstick Joke

By The Staff at wowOwow.com

Sarah Palin’s "lipstick" joke is being used against her — purposefully or not — and John McCain’s campaign isn’t happy about it.

"What’s the difference between a pit bull and a hockey mom?" the Alaskan governor said in her speech at the Republican convention last week. "Lipstick."

During a campaign stop in Virginia Tuesday, Sen. Barack Obama — in arguing that John McCain is more of the same of George Bush — said: "You can put lipstick on a pig … It’s still a pig. You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change. It’s still going to stink after eight years."

McCain’s campaign called the comments "offensive and disgraceful" and said Obama owes Palin an apology. His campaign even held a conference call with former Massachusetts Gov. Jane Swift, a McCain supporter.

Click here to listen to the conference call.

"I think what’s most disappointing and the reason why we need to continually combat this stream of insults is that this is just the latest in the series of comments that many folks like me will find offensive, whether it is Sen. Biden’s comments about Gov. Palin being ‘good-looking,’ their strategist David Axelrod commenting that she obviously knows how to take orders or do what she’s told; the just disgraceful comment by their spokesman that compared her to a ‘Nazi sympathizer’; or the line that I, the mother of three children, find particularly offensive, questioning by one of his finance committee, trying to say that her children, one who has Down syndrome, she’s incapable of doing the job of being the vice president of the United States," Swift said.

"This is just the same old low-road, flinging accusations. And as I said, there are a number of us women across the Republican party, but I also think I’m joined by Independents and Democrats who aren’t going to let our discourse fall to this level. And I think the best way to get things back on the right track would be for Sen. Obama to issue an apology to Gov. Palin."

The Obama camp, which said Obama wasn’t referring to Palin at all, is also firing off verbal responses and e-mails in their defense.

"That expression is older than my grandfather’s grandfather, and it means that you can dress something up but it doesn’t change what it is,” Obama campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki told ABC News. "He was talking pretty clearly about the fact that you can’t just call yourself change when you’ve voted with George Bush 90 percent of the time."

Democrats point to a news article last fall that said McCain criticized Democrats for offering what he called costly universal health-care proposals that require too much government regulation. While he said he had not studied then-Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton’s plan, he said it was "eerily reminiscent" of the failed plan she offered as First Lady in the 1990s. "I think they put some lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig," he said of her proposal.

They also point out that former Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee even said to give Obama a break on the lipstick comment.

"It’s an old expression, and I’m going to have to cut Obama some slack on that one," Huckabee told FOX News. "I do not think he was referring to Sarah Palin; he didn’t reference her. If you take the two soundbites together, it may sound like it. But I’ve been a guy at the podium many times, and you say something that’s maybe a part of an old joke and then somebody ties it in. So, I’m going to have to cut him slack."

Well said, Mister John. Well said. And unfortunate for we the people, that’s for certain.

Well I think this is just so typical of McCain. It couldn’t be about him, couldn’t it? It must be about her. What about “You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change. It’s still going to stink after eight years.” I mean is that calling McCain a stinky old fish in a wrapper or what!? But noooo, nobody could possibly be calling him a smelly old fish. But he thinks they could easily be calling Palin a pig. What do they call a sexist jerk? oh yeah …a pig! I thought Giuliani was the one who liked lipstick. …I can’t keep up with them. Gotta love those family values!

wow staff, how about a discussion of the issues? you seem determined to take things out of context so that palin can say obama’s comment was about her and we all can fight about that instead of things that matter like the economy, the infrastructure, the war(s), corruption bigtime by the same people who would bring you mccain-palin, education, energy, national security, veteran’s needs after they have served this country—things like that. how about a thread on taxation policy? how about writing up proposals for renewable energy and the green collar jobs that would result? how about asking those of us on short budgets how we will like dumpster diving for food in four years if obama is not elected? what about health care? why not ask condoleeza rice to submit a posting on diplomacy?

Are all of you living under rocks?! It’s been all over the news today that it is NOT the McCain side that is outraged. The McCain side has, in fact, said they are sure that Obama’s expression was not aimed at Palin and that any inference was unintentional. The outrage has come from the people who saw this speech, and reacted. And the effin’ press that’s made such an issue out of it. I think all four candidates are probably now having a good laugh over the whole thing. I was one of those who was outraged initially, but Eleanor got me calmed down.(And I never knew this was an old expression. I was raised on ‘em, but Mother Dear never used this one. She did say, however, “That if you lie down in the gutter with dogs, you’ll get up with fleas.”) Now, for Pete’s sake, don’t everyone get their panties in a knot over that one - it’s not aimed at ANYONE. I’m just trying to say I’d never heard the expression before. Period. Mother, who was also the original Archie Bunker, which I’m definitely not, also said, “You’re judged by the company you keep” - and “Least said, soonest mended” - and “You catch more flies with honey…” She also admonished me to never, ever let a boy touch me below the neck - so the first time a boy ever held my hand, I thought I was going straight to hell. Linda…how right you are! The cable news shows are the ones that are making a big deal of this. They have on the Republican “strategists” and the campaign advisers to voice their “outrage”, and the story just keeps going….cycle after ridiculous cycle. I have to say that I did e-mail MSNBC TV yesterday to voice my complaint that I have seen the appalling McCain ad about Obama’s affirmative vote for the bill to teach children about sexual predators more during their “news” shows than any other station. Now I am a fan of MSNBC, especially Keith Olberman and Rachel Maddow, but I told MSNBC they should be getting paid by the McCain campaign for the number of times they ran it. How does that help people make a logical and reasonable decision about the issues? Well, maybe there is a positive….it makes the honorable John McCain not so honorable!

I expect an apology for every news service, as well as wowOwow, that took time from my busy day to report this ridiculous story in lieu of discussing the economy, Iraq, Afghanistan, Constitutional and women’s rights. My sensibilities are offended by every second that the prioritization of things that mean nothing push aside things that mean everything to me.

Don’t you think people are going to get fed up with the McCain campaign continuing to be hypersensitive to every remark? First it was “sexism” toward Palin, now it is taking Obama’s remark in a way he clearly never intended it. If McCain is elected, are we all going to have to have sensitivity training? Sheesh!

We will need some kind of training if we have to live with that sort of thinking everyday. Not sure if it is sensitive or even sensible.

If we’re not treading water or worrying about whether we will again have to replace roofs and we have electricity over the weekend, the TV debate between Palin and Biden should be interesting to watch, to see whether issues are actually addressed or whether it will be another game of “gotcha”! I wish Obama would just ignore the snipes and talk to us about what he plans to do and how he plans to do it and where the money is going to come from to repair the damage in the lives of the American people. For instance, what’s the point of importing cheaper goods, if people have lost their jobs and can’t purchase anything? What are people to do if they can’t afford cheaper health insurance premiums, if they have no money? These are just for starters on my laundry list of what I would like to know and how the problems are going to be solved. Why can’t we have a discussion of what we would like to see accomplished and ideas of how to go about it?

I, too, would like to see Obama in a more serious and even a little more forceful mode….he did this well yesterday when he addressed the whole “pig” comment….humor doesn’t work too well for him. He is a very smart guy, and he sometimes tries humor to make his point, but I just want him (or any of the candidates) to be straight forward and honest with us. I always liked Joe Biden in the debates, because, while they criticize him for being “windy”, he made his point and made it well. I am trusting he will do well in the debate with Gov. Palin, if they are asked appropriate questions and allowed to question their opponents response. There are too many serious issues to be discussed to be thrown off message by the distractions being hurled by the Republicans.

I’m like to make a point about this “pig in lipstick” comment the repulican’s are so up in arms about. The face is the first time we heard the term in 2008 is when Sen. Mc Cain said it about Sen. Clinton’s plans on the economy. Why haven’t someone spoken up on this face. Look it up PLEASE! I got the chance to watch you now TV today and never heard anyone bring up this point and searched all day to find some were on the Web that I could ask you, Whoopi if you know this or could you look into it but, he did said it first this year and to a woman.

I’m with you Lori. Why don’t we start here? I’d like to talk about one of the many elephants in the living room…immigration. Have you heard either of the candidates and the running mates talking about this?
By Bonita Caracciolo on 09/11/2008 10:10 am

Bonita, I am unclear to any reform or what is being done concerning immigration on McCain’s behalf however I am aware of what Obama has been doing and the following comes from Obama’s website: “In approaching immigration reform, I believe that we must enact tough, practical reforms… . We need stronger enforcement on the border and at the workplace… . But for reform to work, we also must respond to what pulls people to America… . Where we can reunite families, we should. Where we can bring in more foreign-born workers with the skills our economy needs, we should… . The time to fix our broken immigration system is now. It is critical that as we embark on this enormous venture to update our immigration system, it is fully reflective of the powerful tradition of immigration in this country and fully reflective of our values and ideals.” [Obama Statement in U.S. Senate, 5/23/07] http://www.barackobama.com/issues/pdf/ImmigrationFactSheet.pdf
