McCain Fires Back at Madonna for Hitler Comparison

Madonna isn’t starting off her 50s quietly. Just ask John McCain.

The pop diva kicked off her world tour in Cardiff, UK, on Sunday with a concert that put the Republican presidential hopeful in the same category as Adolf Hitler and Zimbabwe strongman Robert Mugabe. The swipe came during a performance of the song "Get Stupid," when McCain’s image was flashed up alongside images of destruction, global warming and the two aforementioned men.

Another sequence, later shown to the event’s 40,000 attendees, pictured slain Beatle John Lennon, followed by climate activist Al Gore, Mahatma Gandhi and Barack Obama.

John McCain’s campaign hit back at Madonna on Sunday.

"The comparisons are outrageous, unacceptable and crudely divisive all at the same time," McCain campaign spokesman Tucker Bounds said in a statement. "It clearly shows that when it comes to supporting Barack Obama, his fellow worldwide celebrities refuse to consider any smear or attack off limits."

Hi Elizabeth, I’d like to know what about his economic policies that you don’t like. My understanding is that his platform includes maintaining the highest income tax bracket at 35% (Obama proposes 39.6%, for taxpayers, but is unclear about at what level - $200k?, $250k?); long term capital gain rats at 15% (Obama proposes raising to 20%, possibly 28% - again, unclear as to details); reducing corporate income tax to 25% to 35% (Obama proposes no change in our corporate taxes, which are second highest in the world); and estate taxes at a $10M exemption, 15% rate (Obama, a $3.5M exemtion 45% rate. McCain’s policies are consistent with an economic growth package - Obama’s are not employment (employee or employer) friendly. What specifically do you take exception to, if I may ask?

Here is a fact checker on the Obama vs. McCain economic policies for anyone interested: http://voices.washingtonpost.com/fact-checker/2008/06/mccain_vs_obama_on…

De, You’re under the mistaken impression that elections in the US are decided on facts. As I recall we ended up with George W. Bush because people would have rather had a beer with him than his opposition in 2000, and because if we had voted for Kerry, we all would have been forced into homosexual marriages in 2004. Focus.

McCain has no business acting like Mr. Sensitive with all the mudslinging he’s been doing. If Rove could get Madonna to call Obama Hitler he’d put her in an ad and McCain would approve of it. They’ve already tried to call him “The Anti-Christ” in that “The One” ad… so all this self-righteousness is laughable. Madonna, Cher… they’re celebrities. McCain is running for high office and should be held to a higher standard that his ads have been delivering to the “debate”.

Obama is a public servant. He’s a US Senator, was an IL Senator, before that he was a Community Organizer and an Attorney. I suppose the fact that he is well known could make you call him a celebrity, but then so is McCain well known, and Bush even for that matter. The word celebrity has really come to mean a person who everyone knows everything about but doesn’t really accomplish much. You would call Paris Hilton a celebrity, but Meryl Streep and actress. Now, the fact that some people, are trying to both call Obama a “celebrity” and at the same time they say they don’t know enough about him… that is contradictory.

Wait, I didn’t even look at the thread this is in. What does celebrity have to do with this?

Ending a post like that with the word “Peace” sort of cheapens the word.

I’m not incredibly passionate about either candidate so take that into account when I say comparing McCain to Hitler is way out of line. It’s kind of typical Madonna though. she loves to shock. I’m just not sure if she actually believes it’s helpful or not considering she’s obviously an Obama supporter. She probably just figured she’d generate more conversation. She’s a woman who does not shy away from the heat in the kitchen so to speak.

Madonna actually endorsed Hillary during the Primary. I would guess she is voting for Obama, but is more anti-McCain than a big Obama supporter.

Ok but once again I think everyone is missing the point…Who is Madonna? big deal she is a celebrity…i know we all have opinions but to be honest who cares. Madonna can do what she likes just as Obama and McCain can do as they like…None of us would have even known it happened without reading it on this website b/c I havent heard it on any of those celebrity news channels… I have never been a big fan of celebrities getting involved in politics thinking just b/c they support this person or that person its going to make us choose them, like we should do as they say b/c they make $10 million or more for a movie…Well I dont. My idols are real people such as my parents or my daughter, not Madonna and if she thinks McCain sucks so be it…I think Obama sucks and that is my opinion…like it or not…and yes to the one who said how many celebrities say they would leave the country if McCain gets elected…Please do so! You wont be missed…

Madonna said something moronic. It may or may not have been taken out of context. I believe it is time to just drop her comment and get to the issues. I have been an Obama supporter and it has nothing to do with what celebrities say. Being a celebrity doesn’t automatically make one a brain trust. Celebrities sometimes forget they are just like ordinary, blue (white or pink, pick your collar color!) collar folks—flawed.
