Michael Phelps Apologizes for 'Bad Judgment' Over Pot Pipe Photo

Michael Phelps won’t be smoking marijuana ever again. That’s what the Olympic swimmer, who smashed records when he won eight Olympic golds at the Games in Beijing last summer, bringing his total to 14, said to fans this weekend after British tabloid News of the World published a picture of him smoking pot.

The newspaper didn’t say he was actually smoking marijuana, but pointed out that that’s typically the purpose of the pipe. Michael Phelps acknowledged "regrettable" behavior and "bad judgment" in a statement to the AP, adding: "I’m 23 years old and despite the successes I’ve had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me. For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public it will not happen again." The picture was taken in November, well after the Olympics.

The U.S. Olympic Team weighed in, saying it was "disappointed." The ironic part, however, is that Phelps was part of a group of athletes who were to take part in a pilot program designed to increase the accuracy of doping tests. Now, his role could be at risk. Phelps was arrested in Maryland in 2004 on charges of driving under the influence.

Olympic teammate and super mother Dara Torres said Phelps’s move "in no way, shape or form diminishes anything he’s done."

Let’s hope Phelps stays out of trouble from now until the 2012 Olympics!

Michael, Michael, Michael….you knew the photo was taken of you. You had to know it would be circulated…come on, you were the darling of the Olympics! You, caught of film smoking pot…of course who ever took the photo was going to give (or more likely sell) it to the media. Bad judgement is putting it lightly. This dumb move can now cost you millions in endorsements. Was that hit off the pipe worth it?

Not smart on his part, however, marijuana could hardly be considered a “performance enhancing” drug.

This is when fame can turn your head and you believe you are larger than life and whatever you do will be alright with the public…..wrong!!!! Its all well and good saying it was a mistake now, of course it’s a mistake you were caught and now it’s all over the news….sometimes these sports stars have way too much adolation thrust upon them and they actually believe they are God’s!!! He’ll pay the price I hope and will he find his actions were worth it?

I dont care if he smoked Pot…I care that many kids look up to him and now will think its ok to smoke Pot…From what I have heard his endorsement deals will be looking at this contracts and some will be dropping him…But he won those medals without the use of Pot. If he did it, so be it. I think athlets just like celebrities need to be more aware of what they do b/c kids look up to them.

you are 100% right C Hardy When he became an Olympic Champion, he also became a roll model for children. He signed endorsement deals for his “larger than life” image. When he shows his human side, and falls from grace, that is the consequences of not living up to the standards that you were being paid for.

It was dumb. Period. If you’re gonna smoke weed do it privately or with close friends with no camera/phone in the immediate vicinity.

He blew his image and it will hurt him big time in the pocketbook. Here is a classic example of “at the end of every day, you, and you alone, have to take responsibility for the choices you make.” Hope the dope was worth losing your endorsements. That will come next. f p, I agree with your statement.

We may have done dumb things in our life you are right, but this guy is a role model for many kids and that is not the best way to show by example how to live your life. We know he’s only human but he should have known better as he is idolized by so many.

Why should he know better simply because he is idolized? Does having fans grant a person more intelligence or maturity? He’s an athlete, not a rocket scientist and he is acting in a manner very similar to many other 23 year old athletes. Realistically, if we’re worried about the effect on children, we should stop playing this story on the news.
