Obamas Take Historic Tour of White House, Visit Schools for Daughters (Video)

Michelle and Barack Obama on Monday made their historic visit to their new home and met President Bush and First Lady Laura Bush. The incoming First Lady was participating in a century-old Washington ritual that represents the softer side of the serious business of a presidential transition.
"They will literally become living symbols of the country to the world, for all of history," Carl Sferrazza Anthony, who has written several books about First Ladies, told The Washington Post. "It will redefine their identities."
White House Press Secretary Dana Perino said the president described his meeting with Obama as “good, constructive, relaxed and friendly,” adding that the two men discussed both domestic and international issues.
Transition team spokeswoman Stephanie Cutter said the Obamas were “received warmly."
Daughters Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, are the focus of much debate right now within the Beltway and outside of it. Everyone wants to know where they will go to school, and whether it will be a public or private institution.
The Post reports that Michelle Obama also made trips to the private Georgetown Day School and Sidwell Friends School – the latter of which Chelsea Clinton attended.
Although the Obama transition team and staff at both schools refused to discuss the visits, one ten-year-old boy, Nicolo Pisoni, gave the Post a confirmation of her trip to Georgetown Day.
“I thought it was awesome because I saw the future First Lady," the fourth-grader said. "I got really excited, but we weren’t supposed to get excited. Not out loud. Our teachers told us not to get excited but to show Michelle it was a regular school day and that we aren’t crazy kids. They didn’t want us asking her for her autograph."
Isabel Dorval, a tenth-grader at Sidwell, said she was running on the field at one of that school’s campuses around four o’clock PM when a convoy of cars arrived. About 45 minutes later, the motorcade drove off as Sidwell students waved. Michelle Obama rolled down the window and waved back. "It was cool," she said.
Meanwhile, Politico reports that public school might not be out of the question.
Last week, a phone call was made to Lafayette Elementary School, and the person on the line wanted to know what the process is for enrolling children who don’t live within the school’s boundaries. The caller gave an address: 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue — the White House — and said there would be two children attending.
“They have never given a name,” principal Lynn Main told Politico. “Nobody’s called about touring, coming to visit the school or anything … We took it as a hoax or something.”
