Michelle Obama Chooses a Jason Wu Design for Inauguration Night Gown

A young Manhattan designer gets the shock of his life when the new First Lady appeared on television wearing one of his gowns

Young Manhattan-based designer Jason Wu got the shock of his life around 8 pm EST while watching television. On the screen, Michelle Obama was wearing his one-shoulder, flowing, ivory-colored evening dress, looking very Ginger Rogers. Wu is saying he did not know Mrs. Obama was planning to wear his dress.  Ikram Goldman, owner of Chicago’s top boutique Ikram, sells Wu’s clothes and is Mrs. O’s fashion consultant.

No word on what kind of scandal this is in Chicago, where local designer Maria Pinto, who makes so many of Michelle Obama’s clothes, was favored to design the inaugural gown that will make history.

I love Michelle Obama, that said, my first impression of the dress was that it truly did not rise to the sophistication level it should have. One of the writers here said they could invision a chocolate brown dress, YES that would have been beautiful, or a navy blue, or a beautiful beige, the thing was, I don’t think it had anything to do with the color; it was the shape of the dress. She does have a beautiful figure and would have looked spectacular in a straight dress, with the one shoulder. Regardless, they all looked wonderful.

I didn’t like it, either. It seemed kind of “high school prom” dress to me (well, like the prom dresses worn when I was a teen); too fluffy & young for a gorgeous, fit woman like our First Lady. I noticed, as did someone on one of the news channels, that the President had stepped on the skirt.

While I loved the fact that they are a loving couple and not a politically ambitious matched couple, the dress did nothing for me. I remember saying to my sister that she could have chosen much better. Why not promote the Chicago designers as much as possible. The day outfit really hit the mark for me, as well as the one she wore on Monday.

The First Lady did not wear the dress, it wore her. I didn’t watch all 10 dances, but it appeared she was having trouble manueving the dance with ease. And since was an historic event, more attention to detail should have been in place. On a side note, someone needs to rethink the number of events on inauguration day. No human should endure a near 24-hour schedule so publicly. Nonetheless, they both were gracious throughout the day and evening.

I thought her gown was awful and made her look fat. However, having said that, I think she is an attractive lady who has yet to find her look as first lady. I have no doubt that a year from now she’ll be a knockout. J.B.

Carmel, I don’t think she should be compared to Jackie Onassis. I have great admiration for her. My God, she held this country together when JFK was killed. And raised her children impeccably. But she was born into a world of couture and was ruthless about getting enough money to pay for it. Did you know she sold a piece of jewelry that Joe and Rose gave her for a wedding present in order to buy her famous sun king brooch? And even Onassis complained about her spending. Her dress at the Inaugural was exquisite-Cassini I think-but very formal.JFK wore a top hat. And she did leave early because she was recovering from her C section.JO did have a brilliant sense of history (she had a great intellect) and used it in her fashion. I saw the exhibit of her dresses at the Kennedy Library three times. MO will find her way fashion wise. She has the figure and lots of people will want to help her.

Flora, I love Michelle and am sure she will wind up on the Best Dress list….can’t help comparing her to Jackie…she’s the closest thing we have to her! “I saw the exhibit of her dresses at the Kennedy Library three times.” Lucky you! Loved the book they sold at the exhibition. It’s so great to have a First Lady that creates a stir, glamour, excitement and anticipation. Am sure the discussion of clothes will go on unabated as they did with Jackie who was critized for everything including her hair. “…and was ruthless about getting enough money to pay for it.” Yes, but ruthless in white gloves that broke just so at the wrist. lol New book out about Jackie this month: “Mona Lisa in Camelot”

Carmel, thanks for reminding me about the new book. I read the excerpt but when I called my library to put in on reserve it was too soon. I live about ten miles from the JFK library so it was easy for me to get there and yes, I do have the wonderful book they sold at the exhibition. And yes, even Jackie was critized. Poor thing wore a sleeveles dress to church! And they are the first young family to move into the WHouse; it’s hard not to make comparisons.

I liked the dress, however, I thought it was a little too long and not good for dancing etc. It should have been shorten a little and the train taken off the back.

My husband’s first comment: “is she pregnant?” I fear it was one of those choices that looked so great in person, but when viewed by the cameras, it didn’t translate. All was forgiven when I watched them dance. It was so wonderful to see them together - a truly loving couple. The body language was fabulous. she could have worn a gunny sack - clearly they love each other. Am I the only one who thought at one point Michelle was going to put her hand on the prez’s butt? wishful thinking maybe…

I have a feeling … Michelle is pregnant. Even the voluminous folds in her ball gown could not hide the little “pooch” in the tummy area. Mark my words here today (1/21).

Michelle looked lovely in both outfits I think, of course she was going to get a bashing about them both, some because they really didn’t like them and others well….just because she is Michelle Obama. It wouldn’t have mattered what she wore those folks were going to be nasty regardless, it called “sour grapes”!!!!!

I look forward to seeing this dress closeup in the First Ladies Gallery at Smithsonian. I want to see the detail and the fabric. I think Mrs. Obama looks smashing in white, but, I had the sense she was fighting with this dress the whole evening. I felt like it was too long for her; he kept stepping on it, and she kept having to sweep the train out of the way. There is an old axiom that I remember from the Chanel days—-you wear the dress, don’t let it wear you. http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://a.abcnews.com/images/GMA/a…

I agree, Diana. It made her look clumsy and could not have been comfortable although the fabric was beautiful I am sure. But, she has brought fashion to the forefront and most of her clothes have been gorgeous! Her arms are to die for and inspired me to sign up for an arm weight lifting class yesterday! Hey, that I am in my dotage…no worries…at least they’ll look a little better and every bit helps. LOL
