Michelle Obama a Hit at Democratic Convention

Michelle Obama on Monday night appealed to working women, mothers and voters who still might not be sure who exactly her husband Barack is, in an effort to make the Obama family more of a known quantity in American politics.

Michelle Obama declared "I love this country" during the first major address at the Democratic National Convention in Denver. She described herself as a daughter of working-class parents, a sister, a wife and a mother, no different from many women. She told a thunderous crowd waving signs reading "Michelle" that she and her husband feel an obligation to "fight for the world as it should be" to ensure the promise of a better life for their daughters, Malia and Sasha, and all children.

(Click here for the text of Michelle Obama’s speech.)

"I think about how one day, they’ll have families of their own. And one day, they — and your sons and daughters — will tell their own children about what we did together in this election. They’ll tell them how this time, we listened to our hopes, instead of our fears. How this time, we decided to stop doubting and to start dreaming," she said.

Michelle Obama drove home the point that her husband is a human being just like you. He is not an "other," he is not a "celebrity." He is a father, a husband, a person, she said, echoing her theme of family throughout the speech.

The lawyer-turned-campaigner also gave a shout-out to Hillary Clinton and her supporters as Barack tries to woo disappointed Clinton supporters to his side. Michelle quoted a line directly from Clinton’s concession speech in which the New York senator alluded to the 18 million cracks in the glass ceiling her candidacy created.

"I stand here today at the crosscurrents of that history - knowing that my piece of the American Dream is a blessing hard won by those who came before me," Michelle said. "People like Hillary Clinton, who put those 18 million cracks in the glass ceiling, so that our daughters — and sons — can dream a little bigger and aim a little higher."

Freshman Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-MO, one of Obama’s fiercest supporters, also spoke. Caroline Kennedy tried to bridge the generational shift when she told the crowd, "I have never had someone inspire me the way people tell me my father inspired them, but I do now: Barack Obama."

Yes I agree with you, I’m pretty good at my history and I’m very skeptical of the press, they change your words so easily, I personally know that because the school newspaper always changes my words, of course that’s not as serious as it is when your famous.

I work all week, so I won’t be able to see any of the convention. Baruch Hashem for Public Radio & MP3 players; I got to listen to the speeches last night while I worked, & I’ll be listening to the rest of the convention. I thought Michelle Obama’s speech was grand. I wish I could have seen it. Nancy Pelosi’s speech, on the other hand, was just okay (IMO).

If you don’t like Fox’s coverage, try watching CNN. I enjoyed their commentaries, and there was no noise interference while Michelle was giving her speech. Oh, and, I think it’s safe to say that Mark Klein is a Republican with that tired old Republican mind set.

Michelle, from what I’ve heard, they take turns shooting the video and it was FOXs turn (not sure if that means for the day, or for the entire convention) and then their video is fed to everyone else, so they’re all using the same video.

I tried a little (broadcast) channel flipping to check this out (I am recording the PBS broadcast to DVD), and it looks like there is one shared camera on the podium, but the cuts to the crowd are individual.

Yes that’s what I heard yesterday too. FOX has the podium and feeds it to everyone else, but the crowd shots are individual.

Michelle Obama’s speech was very good and she did a wonderful job of delivering it. Her family must have been very proud ! I couldn’t help thinking that her life will change in a profound way if her husband is elected. John & Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King would have loved to have been there.

WOW - What a speech - What a great lady! I would not be at all surprised to see her as President of the United States in a few years.

I’m not saying Obama isn’t necessarily ‘fit’ to be president but I think McCain is a better choice. That’s just me though.

I work for his campaign here in my state. He believes as do I that anyone who pays taxes should be afforded the same rights and privileges as any other citizen. What can’t be legislated is the church involvement when it comes to unions between couples. That is up to the different churches and since we have separation of church and state in this nation, we cannot tell the churches how to run their situation. That said, all we can do is legislate on behalf of equal rights for all tax paying citizens. This means that if a same sex couple marries, their union is legal and subject to all the perks. What happens as far as church sanctioned unions is left up to a different higher commander in chief, if you will. You’re a pistol, Girl, keep it up. We need young women like you.

I whole-heartedly agree with everything you said, except for the “tax paying” qualifier. Citizens who do not make enough money to owe taxes (like our own Kayla Frank, perhaps) still have the same rights as those who do. For that matter, even tax cheaters retain rights - though getting caught must have it’s consequences. Keep posting Kayla, you are well ahead of the curve.

I have to say, Steve R, that the tax paying qualifier is a formal statement. Left up to me, I don’t see how on earth anybody can feel that love between anyone is something that can be legislated or otherwise. My personal take on the matter is we love who we love and attachments of the heart are definitely above any one’s opinion.

Michell sNAke Obama.. you should LOOK on your face CLOSER and face the truth that you are fucking UGLY… yo HE NEED TO MATCH YOUR FACE and the way to do that is to wear a conservative dress, your body is good but your face with that spiky teeth don’t match those sexy dresses.
