Mad Dash for Michelle Obama’s Dress

Like Jacqueline Kennedy a generation ago, Michelle Obama is causing a fashion sensation even before the election.
But this time it’s a metaphorical fashion statement made by her choice of a $148 black and white print dress carrying a label called White House/Black Market to wear on the popular TV show, “The View.”
The search is on among would-be fashionistas as well as savvy statement-makers for the sleeveless black and white tank dress that Michelle Obama wore on ABC’s “The View” this week. Purchased from a retailer called “White House/Black Market,” the very affordable $148 dress has unleashed a mad scramble on both the store and the website of Donna Ricco, the NYC-based designer of the dress. According to The New York Daily News, thousands of orders for the frock have poured into both.
The White House/Black Market website this morning features what they’re calling their “Road to the White House” dress on their homepage. One hundred percent cotton, wash ‘n wear. Sold out, but available in mid-August.
Yes, we know Michelle Obama is a full-fledged, Harvard-educated Woman of Substance. But now we also know she can use fashion in a way that disarms, makes subtle statements and even shows off upper arms to die for.
White House/Black Market? It just says it all.

Michelle looked fabulous on the ‘View’
She just looked dressed up for sunday morning black South Side Chicago’s church, but instead that day she went for a cup of coffe in the kitchen to gossip with the girls!
If anyone is interested, Nordstrom has the same dress for less.
On the White House Black Market website, they call it the Tank Leaf Print Dress. It sells for $148.00.
On the Nordstrom website, they call it the Donna Ricco Banded Waist Sleeveless Dress. It sells for $98.00.
Check it out. It looks like the exact same dress to me.
Was there a question here? Did we like the dress? Would we buy the dress? Did we like her upper arms? Does the “White House/Black Market” name mean something? Could the name have been a marketing idea from her handlers for the campaign? Do we really care?
Dress was cute — article was stupid!
You are just jealous!
Dress was cute —-article was stupid. Jealous? Not on your life!!
Hardly jealous, but what I would expect from, an Obamatomaniac?? Article is totally irrelevant, and we’re tired of the ignoramous references to Jackie whose clothes were Givenchy,Valentino,Herrera,Cassini,Chanel and spent a fortune on clothes and jewels from her finishing school days to beyond. After Ari, her jewels and clothes were even more lavish. Making Michelle into a Jackie clone is stupid and ludicrousl Michelle is wearing a $148 dress and looks nice in it. Period. She has to be her own person and clothes are not what she has to stress to win over voters. It’s just a very small part of it. If this is what Michelle aspires to it runs counter to everything she’s said about “class” and discriminination. Jackie’s finishing schools would not admit most [even wealthy] whites, certainly no Jews or Blacks. Get real. Jackie was the epitome of the word WASP, yes while Catholic. She was bred and reared to marry well and be socially superior which she was, and was a “typical” product of the ruling class in America.
The question is: Are we going to have to look at dresses like this for 4 more years? How disenchanting!
Probably. We will get a full treatment from the propoganda onslaught in Making Michelle “acceptable” and less of the “stinky” remarks, by distractions like clothes and appearance which allows us to be distracted by what she she really stands for and what many of her comments mean. The public relations machinery at work to make her Jackie with a tan is insulting to Michelle, and certainly to the memory of Jackie Onassis. Is it good PR to slog this Black Liberation lawyer, etc, as a Jackie fashion plate with Sorbonne,Madiera, and upper class schools cred that would discriminate against almost all of us inspite of income, color, or religion?
We will be subjected to a sickening amount of this garbage unless Michelle shows us her real color[s] and speaks substantively and
honesty with directness about her ideas about her role if First Lady.
Jackie didn’t go to ‘Madiera.’ She went to Miss Chapins, Miss Porters, Vassar, the Sorbonne, George Washington University.
The article isn’t ‘stupid.’
Style is an expression of the person, just as are their words and all other choices.
The Wall Street Journal ALSO did an article on Mrs. Obama’s clothes and as her ‘everywoman’ Chicago entrepreneurial designer said she isn’t into Gucci ‘hoo-ha.’ She chooses low-key, relatively inexpensive, well made, non-designer clothes that suit her and she looks like a million bucks in a $148 dress.

Thanks wOw…love fashion pieces especially those that have relevance as this does. Even the staid Wall Street Business Journal recognizes that.
I see you’re still holding on to your angst. too bad. there’s so much reason for hope this season …
It’s a shame, some people just can not let others , have some SUN SHINE!
Michelle purchased the dress because she liked it not for you; don’t rain on
her parade, she did not ask your opinion. I loved it, wonder if they have it in
20 women?
Juanita…No one is raining on her parade. As I said, the dress was cute. Really cute for a back yard barbecue, lunch in town or whatever. However, I don’t think she went in and purchased the dress. I’m sure she has more to do than go shopping at the present time. There are people who are assigned the task to select several dresses — she picks out the one she likes.
She didn’t ask our opinion — however, the written article was asking for just that! An opinion!
It’s downright stupid and ignorant to think Michelle doesn’t have shoppers and makeover people. She’s expected to have this, and looked great, but there has to be more than this fawning. It’s destructive and sickening. No one’s raining on her parade. Sje hasn’t and shouldn’t have time to shop the way we do.
The price point selected was smart, and it was a nice casual summer dress whidh looked good. Her makeup [false eyelashes and all] was terrific, but I shouldn’t have seen fake lashes at 11 AM. But Michelle has shoppers, handlers,as she should, and again it’s expected she look good, but girlfriends this is NOT about fashion. It’s about being authentic and letting us know what she thinks on issues important to women, and ‘splaining many of her angry “I’ll only work towards helping blacks” remarks made in her thesis.
She’s smart, good looking, educated, and as a woman should be talking about what women want to hear about important issues like the sexism we were all subjected to when Hillary was running. This sexism/racism is still here, and Michell we need to hear you on this. Your clothes are not important.
