Michelle Obama Red Dress Update

By The Etceterist

Your Etceterist has received much feedback from friends in response to yesterday’s “Periwinkle Politics” post about the color necktie choice of President Bush and President-elect Obama.

Many readers in my circle disagree with my description that both First Lady Laura Bush and Michelle Obama wore red dresses of differing shades. The majority opinion is Mrs. Bush was wearing brown. Brown? How about we agree on, speaking of the symbolism of clothing color as we did yesterday, “burnt sienna.” Laura Bush wore burnt sienna. The end.

Meanwhile, while Mrs. Obama’s election night Narciso Rodriguez dress remains controversial, some loving it, others hating it, her red Maria Pinto number at the White House, according to my anecdotal research, is getting raves. My favorite comment comes from the Times of London’s Sarah Vine. Just in case you don’t think clothes make the woman, here is what Sarah said about Mrs. Obama’s red dress: “[It is] a garment that betrays her excitement in more ways than one. The color is racy, the cut (empire-line with a pencil skirt) emphatically sexy. And it has been a long while since a neckline as fashion forward as this has been spotted within a mile of the Oval Office.

“It is a dress that requires total self-belief and plenty of chutzpah, not to mention a decent set of curves. It is a results dress: If you wore it on a date, you’d definitely expect a lift home. It’s the equivalent of the Versace safety-pin number that Elizabeth Hurley wore in 1994 to the premiere of ‘Four Weddings and a Funeral.’ It doesn’t just say, ‘Look at me,’ it says, ‘Don’t you dare look at anyone else.’

“By wearing it, Mrs. Obama is leaving no room for confusion: she means business. Whether she will still wear scarlet at the end of her husband’s administration remains to be seen. Expect copies at your local Wal-Mart for Christmas.”

I did not like Michelle’s dress. But that said it seemed to me that she was doing a mommy, daughter, daddy coordinated look. One daughter in black, one in red and mom in red and black, dad in black. She also went with a designer that she had not been using for the most part before. I thought the dress fit her figure well. I did not like the splash of red at the bosum (sp) and below the waist. The run way model (most likely size 2) was sleeveless and the red accents looked less obvious. We need to get over this idea of perfection in the President Elect’s Family—give them a moment please, for it seems that we are not willing to give them any real time.

I thought the dress she wore on election night made her hips look very big. The red dress she wore to the white house is nice and stylish however because she is so tall and the dress has an empire waist, she should be wearing it above her knee not below them. The proportions work better that way.

A new book about Michelle Obama - Michelle: A Biography, by Liza Mundy, is out and in the bookstores. I’m looking forward to reading about her childhood on Chicago’s South Side, her high school experience at an integrated Magnet School, her undergrad years at Princeton, and her Harvard Law School years. That’s the Michelle Obama I want to get to know. Everyone else can comment on her wardrobe.

I like the dress and think Michelle looks great in it. In fact by comparison she emphacizes Laura Bush’s frumpiness.

Hi Sherrie Frumpiness? Ouch! I always think of Laura Bush as gracious, understated, and sort of “homespun.” (And I have never been able to figure out what that sweet woman ever saw in GW.) Re Michelle’s fashion statements, (and I do think of our clothing choices as a statement, and therefore a valid topic of discussion) I usually appreciate what she wears, and what it reveals/shares with us about our fascinating new First Lady-to-be. The election night dress was a glaring exception though. I was disoriented at first glance, I thought the lighting was reflecting her daughter’s dress or malfunctioning in some other way, or perhaps the joy of the moment was coloring my perception in a strange almost psychedelic way. I certainly believe SHE is the one who needs to be comfortable, and that our opinions are just interesting little observations.

I like how Michelle dresses…she is a breath of fresh air. I don’t like the “suits” that all the first ladies seem to wear. Michelle seems laid back but classy at the same time.

I agree with you about the suits. I love to see a perfectly cut, expertly fitted dress. Especially on a tall woman who has impressive stature going for her and doesn’t need the extra “authority” a suit carries.

I’m not fond of this dress she wore to the White House - what’s the deal with the crumpled up material in the chest area?! The dress she wore on Election Night was stunningly unique. But what I really enjoyed the most was that black and white number she wore when she co-hosted The View. ;-)

Kryssi, I’m with you on the dress she wore on the View……….it was stunning. I’m not crazy about the black and red she wore on election night. I liked the red one she wore to the White House. Basically she’s a very attractive woman and with time she will find good designers who will help her find her style……….. Barack always looks good in his clothes. The girls are both darling.

And sorry, but…could the Bushes look ANY MORE inbred???

Just look at Bush………..his normal Ape Stance……….. I’ve never understood how a nice woman like Laura ever fell in love with George. He’s just so stupid. She’s a reader. I often wonder what they have to talk about. I for one will be glad to see them vacate the White House and move back to Texas. We won’t have to worry about him being a Good Ex president……………. He barely’s made it through the Presidency……………it’s best for him to just go back to Texas and ride around in his Pick up truck like the hillbillie he is.

Dona, I’m sure they (especially W) are very happy to be leaving. I’m also sure that history will be alot kinder to W then most people think. We’ll have to wait and see. I mean, look at Carter, Now everyone thinks he is so wonderful and he was a bumbling idiot, who couldn’t handle the hostage situation in Iran. Among other things. Just a thought, since this started out about MO’s dresses, which are horrendous ,maybe Sarah and the Republican party can give her some fashion tips——-or loan her some of Sarah’s clothes.

Beautifully simple but not dull, this was a great choice, neither conservative nor “out there” I think it says a lot about her thinking.
