Michelle Obama Tells Lesley Stahl: Some Won't Vote for Barack No Matter What

Michelle Obama, Election 2008, Campaigning, Lesley Stahl Interview, Politics
© AP
Lesley: What is the biggest misconception you hear/read about yourself and would you like to address/correct it?

Michelle: With all of the attention that’s been placed on our family, I think it’s easy for people to forget that I come from a very ordinary background. I grew up on the south side of Chicago, in a working-class family, living in a one-bedroom apartment. I didn’t grow up with a lot of advantages, but I did have a warm and loving family, and access to public schools that put me on the pathway to success. So my life really has been the American Dream. And that’s why I believe so strongly in my husband’s candidacy. As president, Barack will make sure that every single American is given that same chance to succeed, and to live that dream.

Lesley: This has been a long, grueling, incredible campaign. What have you learned about the country? About your husband? And about yourself?

Michelle: This has definitely been a long and intense campaign. But our family, even our girls, get energy from the thousands of incredible people we’ve met across the country. This experience has really reaffirmed for me that people are so decent – with so many of the same concerns and shared experiences – and so many hopes for our families and our country. We’re all so much more alike than we are different.

Whenever I’m feeling a little sluggish on the campaign trail, I get such energy from the people I meet. Their hugs and words of encouragement always keep me going. And really, who can rest when you meet folks who are tearing up because they never thought they’d live to see this moment? Or the young folks who are so passionate about the political process and focused on working together for change? They keep me going. And they’ve taught me so many lessons about our country and our world.  ‘ve seen again and again that, despite our many differences, and no matter how much we may disagree about the issues, all of us — Democrats, Republicans, Independents — we all love our country. We all care about our families. And we all want to make this world a better place.

Yes they are working hard like anyone else to get to the white house just like people have done before them, but as usual they have to be much better. Condi Rice is more quailified than Bush. I hate to say it but it shows how some people is just resting on the way things have always been.

Marjorie — Yeah, nice article, Now, wouldn’t it be nice if the WOW staff would do a nice article about Cindy McCain? After the sickening article by the NY Times about her (what do we expect from that slime rag) — wouldn’t it have been nice for these WOW women to have extended the same courtesy to Cindy McCain as a rebuttal. Sure can tell where these ladies hitched their panties!!!!!

Lady Gator, We McCain supporters have to give ourselves credit. This was a perfect opportunity to bring up all the slimy stuff out there about Michelle, and there’s plenty of it. But, I hate this pouncing on women. It is all this group does — one long cat fight — it’s ugly. At least this will be one string that will be free of that for obvious reasons. This is an Obama site. If they put up an article about Cindy McCain, this group would immediately tear her apart. The mainstream media goes from Gov. Palin to Cindy McCain and back again. Meanwhile, Obama and Biden get a free passes.

I agree with the above. I think on a past Cindy thread, though, some of us got some wOwers to look at her for what she is. Maybe. OK—I am Pollyanna today! Speaking of the press, Juan Wms actually said the Obama campaign is very vindictive against reporters who say anything negative. Can’t wait for yrs and yrs of this.

Vindictive? What are they doing to retaliate? Are they refusing to answer negatively-put questions, locking out reporters, what?

The McCain Camp has made vilifying the press into the cornerstone of their campaign! It is mentioned at nearly every rally and Palin even made mention of it during her debate. What are you talking about?

A McCain presidency would evade the press as much as the Bush presidency has. Hey, DeB, if you can hack some foul language, you might get a hoot out of this old Bill O’Reilly clip I came across, where he displays an amazing lack of self-control: http://www.holytaco.com/2008/05/12/bill-oreilly-goes-on-screaming-rampag…

Oh I saw that! O’Reilly is such a jerk. And McCain has already kept the press from asking questions of Palin and, as I said above, made vilifying the press a cornerstone of his campaign… so anyone quoting some person’s accusation that Obama is “vindictive” to the press is really grasping at straws.

I’d like to see the video where Marlo Thomas threw a cup of coffee at O’Reilly. That was years ago, too, so there may not exist any video. Speaking of whom, Marlo was on the “Today” show this morning, looking ravishingly beautiful, as always, and talking about the “Free to Be..You & Me” project, etc.

If anyone deserves a cup of coffee thrown at them it’s Bill O’Reilly.
