Michelle Obama Tells Lesley Stahl: Some Won't Vote for Barack No Matter What

Michelle Obama, Election 2008, Campaigning, Lesley Stahl Interview, Politics

With only days before the election, wowOwow’s Lesley Stahl caught up with Michelle Obama …

Lesley: If you win, you’ll be inheriting an economy in as dire a condition as most of us have ever seen. Do you see a role for the First Lady in dealing with the psychology of tough times? What can a First Lady do?

Michelle: Leading us out of this economic crisis is the job of the next president. But the First Lady can help in crucial ways. She can be a bridge to communities across the country – talking with folks about their concerns, their struggles and their hopes for the future. Over the last year and a half, I’ve been hosting roundtable discussions with working women and military spouses, and I’ve heard countless stories from women and families who are having a really tough time in this economic downturn. They’re doing everything they can to make a good life for their families, but still, they’re slipping.

I’ve really treasured these discussions. It’s been incredibly valuable to hear these women’s voices and their stories. As First Lady, I would keep these conversations going, and bring their stories back to my husband and his staff, because our president really needs to understand the challenges that working women and military families face, so he can enact policies that will truly bring change people really need to their everyday lives. In an Obama White House, those conversations will happen. We’ll keep talking and we’ll keep listening. I want to help women and families have more of a voice in our government. They deserve it.

Lesley: As we come down to the last three weeks of the campaign, the polls are showing almost a "tipping point" slide toward your husband — with states usually thought of "rosy red" turning "berry blue." Do you trust the polls? Or do you think there’s some hidden racism?

Michelle: I think there are two conversations that have been going on throughout this whole election. There is the conversation that has been happening with the pundits about the polls and the campaign combat. And then there is the conversation that has been happening on the ground. The folks out there aren’t really interested in the horse race and the negative back and forth. They want to know about the positions that the candidates have on the issues. They want to hear how our next president is going to help this struggling economy.

And of course, there will always be people who won’t vote for Barack Obama no matter what. But there are also people who will not vote for John McCain no matter what. That’s always the case in politics. But we don’t focus on that. We focus on getting out the facts about Barack’s ideas and his positions on the issues, and the values that guide him.

Lesley: Raising children as part of the First Family is a unique challenge. I actually covered Amy Carter’s first day at public school. Chelsea Clinton went to a private school, and seems to have had as normal an upbringing as is possible. What do you think about raising your girls in the White House? What are the pros and cons? And what kind of school are you thinking about?

Michelle: Barack and I have been really proud of how the girls have handled themselves throughout the campaign. They have taken this campaign in stride, in their own individual ways. They’ve learned a lot, and they’ve managed to have some fun, too, which is wonderful. And if Barack has the honor of serving as our next president, we will work hard to make sure our girls have smooth adjustment to life in Washington. That will be my No. 1 job. I’ve already had some great conversations with Hillary Clinton, Tipper Gore and Caroline Kennedy, and they’ve all given me great advice on how to make sure that your kids stay grounded and whole — even in the White House. But you know, that comes later. For now, we are staying focused on getting out our message and getting out the vote for the Obama/Biden ticket. We are taking this experience one day at a time.

I’ve seen his show, he is an obnoxious bully who plays very loosely with the truth… and when someone calls him on a lie, he yells at them to “SHUT UP!”

I agree entirely - if he behaved the way he does on Australian television he would be sacked in a blink of an eye - even with Murdoch shareholdings. Am I ever grateful Rupert prefers to be an American citizen and denounced his Australian citizenship - I do however apologies for the appalling stuff he dishes up to the American public. We get Fox on cable tv in Australia so we get to see the most amazingly rude, obnoxious, bullying and irrational lying media talking heads inflicted on Americans - they are certainly unable to be called journalists. It is time the US media employees go to back to university and learn what journalism truly means.

What is really sad and even scary, is that this is what many Americans eat this stuff up. It HAS damaged our society and lowered the discourse level in this country as well as the level of REAL information.

Marjorie — Last night, on Fox, Greta Van Sustren did an interview with Cindy McCain as a rebuttal to the Times article. They were on the campaign bus in PA. I just wish some of these women on here who are constantly “gang banging” her could have seen this interview. She is really a neat lady. And, it was interesting when she was talking about all of HER activities. It would be nice if this site could be “fair and balanced” — but, it will not happen here. You are right — this is an Obama site. I should have known that when I first heard about this site. Especially since I already knew the ‘founders political leanings’. However, I did think that there would be more civility. I thought, at one time, that after the election there might be a more united group and we would be able to talk about other things and all get along — however, so much as been said, so many insults have been uttered — not to sure now!

I wouldn’t call it an “Obama site,” Lady Gator, but it is definitely left-leaning. No surprise, most left-leaning folks support the Dem’s candidate. But not all. Ohio St. v. Penn St. this weekend. Go Lions!

Susan, When better than two-thirds of the sites founders promote Obama, it is safe to say it is an Obama site. It is because of them that so many Obama supporters feel they can get away with insulting everything and everyone who is not of their ilk. Matter of fact they keep the fires stoked with their provocative articles. Every Friday it’s a Margo Howard article on ‘Let’s Jump Sarah’, and the crowd of sheep are happy to comply. In between there is a poem or a cartoon jabbing at Sarah. I suppose the WoW staff would like to see us go away. When we do, this site will become nothing but a bunch of women criticizing other women for how they dress or think, or spend their days dwelling on old actresses and dogs. All the important stuff elite women care about.

Ironically, though, it was the stuff I read here that pushed me not to write in and to vote for McCain-Palin! I like Sarah Palin, as everyone in the free world knows, so that was a fresh, interesting surprise…and made me think, hey, this could be interesting. So the founders helped me come to a conclusion and not just brood over the ruin of the Dem party.

Star…..Well, maybe they did me a favor. It helped me make my decision. And, I have to admit that Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid helped also. Good Lord a 9% rating. Hopefully we will have enough on both sides of the aisle to have a “speed bump”. But, one thing I have to say — I so admire all of you on this site (and we can count them on two hands) that continue to stand up and be counted. So, I just keep hanging in with you guys. LOL

I believe it was Sen Biden who said during the debate that Sen Obama has asked him to run the legislative operation of him. Also not in the constitution! And the White House will have a political director for that. Yes, the White House has its own lobbyists. Isn’t life grand? Senator Biden, I believe, also said not only that a Dem admin would be tested out of the box by foreign powers, but that people should stand by because the admin’s response might not be the right one at first. Now—he is yanked off the campaign trail, presumably for committing truth.
