Comeback Kid Mickey Rourke Accepts 'Best Actor,' Thanks 'Dogs' (Video)

There were plenty of accolades to go around at last night’s 66th Annual Golden Globes — and a few surprises, including comeback kid Mickey Rourke’s "best actor" win for his role in "The Wrestler." The perenial bad boy stumbled onstage to thank his "dogs" during his acceptance speech — but perhaps nobody deserves more thanks than the actor himself.

Rourke, 56, was once compared to Marlon Brando, Robert De Niro and Jame Dean, until his rebellious lifestyle took its toll on the charmer. So it was especially poignant last night to see Rourke — who seemed to have no career a mere three years ago — beat out Leonardo DiCaprio for "Revolutionary Road," Frank Langella for "Frost/Nixon," Sean Penn for "Milk" and Brad Pitt for "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button."

In "The Wrestler," Rourke portrays Randy "The Ram" Robinson, a professional wrestler past his prime, holding on to the remains of a once-famous career. And the similarities to his life obviously aren’t lost on Rourke.

"This has been a very long road back for me," Rourke said. "Several years ago I was almost out of this business." Rourke went on to thank the film’s producers, cast, and director Darren Aronofsky, who "brought the best out of me." He also complimented his agent: "I wanna thank David Unger for having the balls" to believe in him. And, remember, he also thanked "all his dogs" for being there for him when times were tough. And we do, too!

Mickey Rourke’s acceptance speech was the most heartfelt of the evening IMHO. And the fact that he thanked his dogs (the ones here and the ones that have passed on), for helping him through a difficult lonely time, was beautiful. I can’t wait to see The Wrestler, and I am happy for Mickey Rourke’s successful comeback, hopefully he will stay on the straight and narrow and stay on the scene for a long time to come.

I happen to like the Golden Globes. It’s the best of all award shows because it’s more of a party. People get to have fun even during their speeches and mingle. Rourke was the surprise of the night but that may be because Heath Ledger was in another category. He screwed up his career big time, and proved you can have a comeback. I haven’t seen this movie but the reviews were good. I was happy for Kate Winslet. She has never won and walked away with 2 awards.

PS. i loved that he thanked his dogs. i’ve known more than one damaged in pain person that were blessed with beautiful dogs who loved them and carried them through.

Dogs are good for the heart and soul, life is just better when you share it with a dog.

I agree. And, they don’t care what you look like or if you’re rich or poor. And, they’re great listeners.

Okay you guys are making me feel really shallow….I couldn’t get past how awful he looks. Thanks a lot ladies, now I’m the mean one. :-)

LOL Belinda. His appearance didn’t go un-noticed, he certainly doesn’t have the sex appeal he once held. He has always looked a little rough around the edges, I think that is what attracted many women to him especially in 9&1/2 weeks.
