Minnesota Congresswoman in Hot Water Over Obama 'Anti-American' Remarks (Video)

Just when you think you’ve reached the top and are a virtual shoe-in for election, or re-election, there comes a “macaca” moment that brings you down.

Minnesota Republican Rep. Michele Bachmann has spent months building her profile through appearances on CNN’s "Larry King Live," FOX News’s “The O’Reilly Factor” and even CNBC “Squawk Box,” but one swipe at Barack Obama for possibly being “anti-American” got her even more press attention – and maybe not for the better.

“The liberals that are Jeremiah Wright and Bill Ayers are over-the-top anti-American … remember it was Michelle Obama who said she was only recently proud of her country. Those are anti-American views,” Bachmann said on a recent appearance on MSNBC’s “Hardball.”

Most Americans are very proud of America, she added, and “they’re very concerned about a president who doesn’t share those values.”

After quite a bit of baiting by “Hardball” host Chris Matthews, Bachmann said: “I’m very concerned he may have anti-American views, that’s what the American people are concerned about.”

“If people like that [Wright, and others] were John McCain’s mentors, you’d be all over John McCain.”

When Matthews asked her exactly how many U.S. congressmen and -women are “anti-American,” she responded: “I think the news media should do a penetrating exposé … at the views of the people in Congress and find out if they’re pro-America, or anti-America.”

Matthews told Politico.com that one of his bookers called John McCain’s presidential campaign early Friday for help in filling his Friday afternoon interview slot. Matthews said it was the campaign who offered up the ever-willing, media-loving Bachmann.

But since that interview, AP reports, Bachmann found herself fending off criticism from former Secretary of State Colin Powell, a Republican, and Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California. Her election opponent, Democrat Elwyn Tinklenberg, also received an influx of $810,000 in donations within 72 hours after Bachmann’s MSNBC appearance.

Bachmann has been favored to win a second term. But Democrats hate her for pushing a gay marriage ban while a state legislator, pressing conservative views on oil drilling and other issues. So now, smelling blood, national Democrats on Monday said they would pour $1 million into TV ads in her district, which is in the area from the Twin Cities northwest to St. Cloud.

She told WCCO-TV in Minneapolis that her comments about Obama were misread.

"I feel his views are concerning, and I’m calling on the media to investigate them," Bachmann told the station. "I’m not saying that his views are anti-American. That was a misreading of what I said."

A Bachmann spokeswoman said the campaign is bracing for an onslaught of attacks, and may increase its own advertising campaign.

I mean if he was that great why havent they backed him before this lady said what she said? that is more concerning to me then some lady saying what she feels which by the way a lot of ya’ll on here get on Reps for not saying what they actually feel so now that one does, damn her to hell! Make up your minds on what you want to hear…OH never mind I know as long as its nothing bad about Obama then everyone is ok???

Hi CO, I really like your honest posts but I don’t get what you are trying to say: all of a sudden the dems back their own guy?

Chips…From what I gathered from this article he wasnt getting much finacial support from his party until she went on air and said what she said…the article pointed out he got his huge amount of money & now he could be getting up to a million more…that is what I meant with my comment.

How much support the candidates get is a bit relative: “Bachmann, who won the seat in 2006, had a voting record more conservative on economic, social and foreign policy issues than 89 percent of her colleagues last year, according to the National Journal’s ideological scorecard of congressional members. She gets more money from abortion-opposition and gun-rights groups than all but nine other members of the House.” Star Tribune 10/8/2008 The contest was not actually competative until she let her inner self slip out.

The election is looming large. Is this not the last chance for the extreme right to keep Americans frightened, divided, and voting against their own best interests? It has, after all, worked quite well in the past. I dare to hope it is NOT going to work this time. Ms. Bachmann, and her copy of the “Karl Rove Playbook” need to be retired to the Hall of Shame. p.s. to C O: This isn’t about Obama, he is just being used as the target. It is about you and me and democracy.

Countrywoman-“you and me and democracy”; sounds like the start of one heck of a good country song. I agree; just throw it all out there, no matter how ridiculous or untrue or mean-spirited, and see what sticks. That’s the Karl Rove political polka! And by the way, in case anyone was worried, I am qualified to say these things because I live in “one of the patriotic parts of the country”-Texas. CO-It isn’t about Obama; it’s about whether we are going down the road of intolerance and fear. This is a new world, in a new century and those of us who recognize it are not only patrotic, but we are the hope for America’s future.

so Elizabeth just b/c I had the nerve to voice my fear means I am not patriotic? I really hope that isnt what you were implying…Because sweet lady that is so far from the truth…Maybe I feel that our society hasnt come as long of a way as we like to think and maybe I feel that way b/c I live in a town that isnt so wealthy as others and I see the what are they called, oh yeah “white trash” and the “ghetto” and my Fiance’ deals with then hands on every day he is at work…so excuse me if I go off the mind set of those who live around me and that I have to deal with everyday…Yes I am sure there are more better people then there are not but where I live that doesnt mean a damn thing…

This woman can say things that are terrible with a smile plastered on her face and a gleem in her eye. I hope after she loses the election we don’t see her on TV again. I sometimes enjoy watching a cable news show but she is on too many and I have to change the channel. She looks like her head is going to start turning in circles any minute.

CO, huh? I’m respectfully asking, what are you talking about? How does living in a predominantly impoverished area give justification to what this obvious right wing fanatic says? Don’t you know that it’s the economic policies of the republican party that have pushed so many hundreds of thousands, if not millions, more people down into poverty? Are you saying that by making American people poorer they’re making them “Real Americans”; that policies and programs to help bring some prosperity back to the working class are “Anti-American”? The right wing nut job in this article is talking about Obama’s connections to people who they’ve labeled for political purposes as “Anti-American”. I don’t know what you think that has to do with the poverty in your area, but I’m sure that if you want to compare from an economic standpoint the Bush/Cheney connections to the Bin Laden family of Saudi Arabia have a lot more to do with that. I’d consider the Bin Ladens a lot more “Anti-American” wouldn’t you?
