Molly Wood Won Over By Kindle, But Waiting for Next Model (Video)

By Molly Wood

When Amazon first announced its flagship gadget, the Amazon Kindle, I admit I was both befuddled and amused. Really? An e-book reader? Are we still doing those? But the Kindle did come with some tantalizing features: a free wireless data network so that you could actually download books and newspapers on the go; the nice big high-contrast screen; the ability to use one device for all your books, newspapers, and magazines. I was intrigued, but not quite ready to accept.

Now? I am ready. Books are piling up on every surface of my house! Last week, I went on vacation with the family, and as I packed one half-finished book plus another book to start in case I finished the half-finished one, plus two magazines and the day’s newspaper, I thought to myself, “Self? You need an e-book reader.” The books are cheaper to buy electronically, I can just pull it out and buy them on impulse when I hear about them on the radio, and the Kindle is one paperback-sized device to carry around instead of two or three paperbacks! It’s perfect!

But the Kindle is a first attempt: It’s too expensive right now and it’s got some big design flaws, like no backlight, and the page-turn buttons, which are too big and placed on the sides of the device so that you accidentally turn the page when you’re holding it. And if it’s going to include free data service, I’d like a browser and some better options for putting my own files on it. Therefore, I am pinning all my hopes on the Kindle 2, a device widely expected to be announced at an Amazon press conference on February 9. I’ll be waiting, Amazon. Don’t let me down!

Anyway, here’s this week’s Buzz Report, featuring the Amazon Kindle 2 and some furious thoughts about Apple patenting the technology behind the iPhone and iPod Touch touchscreens.

Thanks! I have been eying the Kindle and the Sony Reader, mostly to save the effort of carrying so many books when I travel. I am primarily interested in the ability to download all the free books my library offers. Any advice?

I use my Kindle all the time. There are a lot of resources for free books - Amazon often has them and there are other ways of getting them. http://mobiletechnology.suite101.com/article.cfm/free_kindle_book_resour… and booksummit.com

I have to say that a “tech guru” who doesn’t yet have a Kindle gives me pause. Here in Silicon Valley, everybody has had one for two years!

Christine, Not me and I’m a techie. I’ve started waiting for the second itteration of things too. Cheaper, improved, and other choices in the meantime. Am interested if you use the downloadable reader on IPhone or Sony or any others. Also, read ‘Silicon Valley” and do miss living on Stanford campus and the two Apple stores in the mall and on University, and wonder if you are seeing results of economic downturn in University Ave businesses and restaurants. Cheers.

Well, I’ll probably be indulging in the new Kindle, as well. No IPhone for me, though. It doesn’t support Outlook. I’m sure you can relate to a girl, though, who often spends Saturday night at Frye’s.

Hi, Cheryl! Yes, the Kindle and the Sony Reader should let you download free library books, as long as they are in the “MultiFormat” format. Other ebook formats are encrypted and may not work on these devices. Hope that helps!

Check out the Sony Reader. I am using the second generation which does have a built in light. Travelling with these things is fantastic. I can take over 100 books in one 8 ounce package. The drawbacks of the Sony vs. the Kindle are that the Sony needs a computer to download the books and the availablity of titles is greater with the Kindle. However, the Sony excells in design and is extremely easy to use. The “e-ink” technology makes it very easy to read and quite similar to an actual printed page. Either way, if you are an avid reader, these gadgets are great.

I really like my Kindle . I do wish it had a backlight also. For the most part it is user friendly. Using the internet is cumbersome.

I love love love my Kindle! and they can hold up to 200 books! they download in less than a minute using cell phone towers….no going to the library and checking out cat dander and cigarrette smoke (*eewww) smelling “real” books! I got mine last summer and cannot imagine being w/out it! last month I got 11 free new releases!! there’s soo many books to choose from…back-light….no need! this is one great purchase and as many books as I read, this has paid for itself already! (*especially, no more emergency visits to the hospital ($500) because of my cat dander allergies.)

How do you find the free new releases, Debbie?

Amazon does charge 10 cents for changing the format of your files to move them to your Kindle. I have no need of this service, but, it’s there for those who do.

I, too, received my Kindle last summer. I truly love it. Can’t imagine being without it. I bemoan the lack of backlight - mainly because my husband doesn’t like a light on when he watches TV. I do find that I can only find about 4 out of 10 books available anytime I try to download. I am searching from new releases reviewed in major newspapers and magazines. One unexpected benefit - it’s a great ice breaker. I have yet to be using it in an airport, restaurant, or resort without someone asking me about it. it’s like having a dog.

FYI, I found a clip-on reading light at Border’s that works perfectly with the Kindle.

I’m concerned about the possible negative effect on my vision from using Kindle. I have a “pre-glaucoma” condition and don’t want to worsen it, much as I’d love to have the convenience of Kindle. Does anyone have any info or experience with vision problems from using it?

Debbie, where do you find the “free” new releases on Kindle? Sounds great!
