Monica Crowley to Scott McClellan: 'Not Cool' to Kiss 'n' Tell With Bush Still in Office

Editor’s Note: Monica Crowley, Ph.D., is a panelist on The McLaughlin Group, the host of the nationally syndicated radio program, "The Monica Crowley Show," and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

It used to be, back in the day, that those who served their country in high positions — positions of authority and importance — would honor their offices and the office they ultimately served: the presidency. Even when they may have acted dishonorably in office, they kept the dirty linens to themselves. That’s what was expected of them, and that’s what they did.

They didn’t write kiss ‘n’ tells. They didn’t spill the beans. They didn’t tell tales out of school.

They kept their counsel, and went to their graves with the stories that gentlemen simply did not tell.

Good-bye to all that.

The unspoken rule of political memoirs once was: you can write what you’d like, and you can express disagreements and even once-confidential conversations (provided enough time had elapsed so as not to imperil national security secrets or anyone’s reputation), but you must only do it once the presidency in which you had served had ended. There was to be no memoir writing while the president for whom you had worked was still in office.

George Stephanopoulos was the first high-ranking White House official to publish a tell-all while his president was still in office. All Too Human was a scathing look inside the highly dysfunctional Clinton White House, published nine months before Bill and Hillary backed up the moving van and made off with the White House furniture.

Was it salacious? Yup. Was it delightful? You bet. Was it proper? Not really.

Now a new memoir is hitting the bookshelves, written by former Bush press secretary Scott McClellan. In it, he blasts the president for relying on "propaganda" to sell the Iraq war, which he now deems "unnecessary." He attacks the vice president and Secretary Condi Rice for incompetence and arrogance, and goes after the president for being stubbornly attached to certain positions.

Some of these criticisms may have merit. The events we are in the midst of now will one day be history, and the history of the administration will be looked at from many angles and with many sets of eyes.

But for someone who was once the president’s confidante, someone he knew and trusted, someone who gave him the opportunity of a lifetime, to write a tell-all while that history is still being made is not cool. There will be plenty of memoirs coming out of the Bush administration. Most will be cover-your-tushy affairs, as memoirs often are. Some will paint a glossy picture. Some will be critical. But their timing is crucial.

McClellan could have published this book in eight months, when Bush was on his way out the door. But then, he wouldn’t have sold as many books. Publishing now may make him a bit wealthier, but it’s simply not cool to do to your former boss and your president. Not cool at all.

Sarkozy is not an imbecile. He is extremely smart and Segolene was so pathetic! The problem is that he doesn’t have any “class”, something the French cannot accept for their president. I am sorry i don’t have time to explain what “class” really is. I know the Sarkozy’s and don’t really care for the style (Even though, one son is very handsome ! LOL)

Cat lord, I was responding to Right-Winger Monica Crowley—who has an advertisement for Hillary is Satan baseball caps on her blog http://www.monicamemo.com/ —-and made the on air assertion that the French must and will change. Sarkozy’s approval ratings have tanked and the French are not Americans. They take action— overall they’re better informed and a lot smarter. Sarkozy is not going to succeed in shoving change down the throats of the French public. Apparently Crowley forgot what happened to Dominque de Villepin (who I’d hoped would be the president of France) after his jobs bill fiasco, his career was toast. Sarkozy is NOT de Villepin—who is a very classy man who speaks at least 3 languages. Here he is on Charlie Rose: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLFniHz8i_g&feature=related The hubris of the US right-wing pundits stating “France has to change” is bizarre. It comes from not wanting the most influential country in the EU to have a higher living standard, the best medical care on the planet (free), longer vacations, a stronger currency than the USD, and at least with Chirac, the independance to say no to profiteering wars. France is only slightly larger than Texas, with less than double California’s population, remains the world’s 7th largest economy, and has a higher UN human development index— in the top 10—the US is not: Iceland 0.969 Norway 0.968 Australia 0.962 Canada 0.961 Ireland 0.959 Sweden 0.956 Switzerland 0.955 Japan 0.953 Netherlands 0.953 France 0.952 ___________ Finland 0.952 United States 0.951 Spain 0.949 Denmark 0.949 Austria 0.948 United Kingdom 0.946 Belgium 0.946 Luxembourg 0.944 New Zealand 0.943 Italy 0.941 Hong Kong 0.937 Germany 0.935 Israel 0.932 Greece 0.926 Singapore 0.922 South Korea 0.921 Slovenia 0.917 Cyprus 0.903 Portugal 0.897 Brunei 0.894 Sarkozy the American is not a good speaker. His address to the US Congress and his twitchiness were not presidentia, but then we don’t have a president with stature or bearing either. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rlt2GE4EYo4 And with the US being #48th in the world in infant mortality, 55th in literacy, 72nd in overall health, 44th in freedom of the press; right-wingers look pretty ridiculous saying France should change when we are the ones that need to. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcz_NHAFGS0 I liked Cecilia Sarkozy esp after she refused to go to Kennybunkport and have hots dogs with the mass murdering dimwit. Good for her. I hope she is very happy in her new relationship.

Rose/Suzanne I wondered where you were - the fastest fingers in the west. Well have fun, just up your alley. Don’t you think McClellan is kind of boring? Hey, whatever? He is small potatoes

Who is not cool is Monica Crowley. People a lot higher up than Scott M have tried to warn Americans about this administration a much earlier, like Paul Craig Roberts. I’m thankful McCellan wrote this book now, rather than later. He gave his reasoning why he didn’t do it sooner on MSNBC: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zc57o0E_kA8

After giving us all that, you, Pink Rose, should be a burning red by now. I’m with you, honey, all the way. Has everybody forgotten about Paul O’Neill’s book, “The Price of Loyalty”? This was published in 2004 and should have raised all sorts of flags––––and probing questions, but no, we kept slogging along with this sorry administration. Not cool? What a strange word to use in this situation. John Dean who knows a lot about the aftermath of whistle blowing says that Scott is for a roller coaster ride as he surely will be. People say Scott should have said something when he was still press secretary, but he claims he wasn’t privy to all the shenanigans until later. He feels he was deceived. I think he’s bloody angry and wants some people to get their just desserts. I, too, am glad he brought the book out now when it can get the kind of press it would never get once GW gets out of office. And another thing–––it’s good for the democrats.

Rose I don’t care if Scott McClellan wrote a book. He was always kind of a big baby. He was pissed because the WH told him something and he went out and reported it and swore by it and he ended up being criticized for it He also did some dumb stuff on his own, and couldn’t handle the press well all the time. He cried when he got fired. He seems easily manipulated. That is the problem I have with it because there is nothing new in it. Get real.

Always OUTSTANDING….Frank Rich’s NYT Op Ed: “McCain’s McClellan Nightmare”, excerpt: “Americans don’t like being lied to by their leaders, especially if there are casualties involved and especially if there’s no accountability. We view it as a crime story, and we won’t be satisfied until there’s a resolution. That’s why the original sin of the war’s conception remains a political flash point, however much we tune out Iraq as it grinds on today. Even a figure as puny as Mr. McClellan can ignite it. The Democrats portray Mr. McCain as offering a third Bush term, but it’s a third term of the war that’s his bigger problem. Even if he locks the president away in a private home, the war will keep seeping under the door, like the blood in “Sweeney Todd.” link to entire piece: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/01/opinion/01richedit.html?em&ex=12124656…

I wish these people had the courage to write this when it was happening so it could have been prevented…” People were writing/talking…this documentary filled with hi-level CIA, weapons inspectors, US Ambassadors, including to Iraq, was out in 2003 and updated later. Their words couldn’t get through the corporate media—who want $War$ and esp Fox News 24/7 drumbeat FOR IT and characterizing anyone against it as a Traitor etc. Here’s the video…I saw it in 2003 and rewatched a few nights ago. Still extremely powerful and amazing. thank god for filmakers like Robert Greenwald who did other excellent films like OutFoxed. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid= 7371253996117324045&q=uncovered%20the%20whole%20truth%20about%20the%20iraq%20war

Is WoW having a contest to insert as many cliches in writing as possible? OK. I’m in. Yeah, Scotty really let the cat out of the bag, in the nick of time, to come just under the wire, so we could chew the fat, it’s been a long row to hoe, and a laugh a minute—but—Rome wasn’t built in a day, there’s only 24-hrs in a day, and no time like the present, to say what goes around comes around, and that Scotty-Come-Lately just hopes that Bush Inc gets their just deserts.

Playing nice went out the window when Bush sent Colin Powell to lie to the United Nations about the weapons of mass destruction. Hundreds of thousands people and trillions of dollars have been “expended” in the wake of those continuing lies. McClellan has every right to tell his truth.

By the way, do you’all remember when I was saying the Rove brigade was going to have a Guantanamo show-trial to try to influence the election between now and November? http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080529/ap_on_re_la_am_ca/guantanamo_sept11_… Now, as I was saying…. If the Bushies threw out the rule book, they can’t complain because someone decides to come clean and tell the truth at a politically useful time. It’s their game, and Mr. McClellan learned it from them.

I watched the ugly side show at the UN as Powell lied and lied. The pointer and powerpoint were so obviously contrived that I found it hard to believe anyone would buy this “fix”. Democrats and Republicans en masse allowed this betrayal of our country and of our people. Powell was the first messenger and the most reprehensible because he had the trust of the American People who believed in his integrity. Americans also allowed themselves to be duped by a compliant Media and the cult notions of “likeability”. The talk about “cool” by Monica Crowley today regarding McLelland’s tell-all is absurd in the light of Powell’s betrayal of millions. How “cool” was this act of Mass Destruction?

Mugsy I love when you defend a republican. It is great to see. He doesn’t offer anything that we don’t already know. He wasn’t even in all the meetings he claims he was, and many times he based what he said because he ‘saw’ two people together, he wasn’t even in on the conversation. I could care less what he says. Now if Rove turned, what a read that would be!

Dear Ms. Brice, I am not defending a republican here, I’m defending the truth getting out. If Rove wants to turn, fine. But somehow, I doubt that’s going to happen. I think these people sometimes look in the mirror and don’t like what they see and (as we all know) they also see $$$$$$$$$$.
