Monica Crowley to Scott McClellan: 'Not Cool' to Kiss 'n' Tell With Bush Still in Office

Editor’s Note: Monica Crowley, Ph.D., is a panelist on The McLaughlin Group, the host of the nationally syndicated radio program, "The Monica Crowley Show," and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

It used to be, back in the day, that those who served their country in high positions — positions of authority and importance — would honor their offices and the office they ultimately served: the presidency. Even when they may have acted dishonorably in office, they kept the dirty linens to themselves. That’s what was expected of them, and that’s what they did.

They didn’t write kiss ‘n’ tells. They didn’t spill the beans. They didn’t tell tales out of school.

They kept their counsel, and went to their graves with the stories that gentlemen simply did not tell.

Good-bye to all that.

The unspoken rule of political memoirs once was: you can write what you’d like, and you can express disagreements and even once-confidential conversations (provided enough time had elapsed so as not to imperil national security secrets or anyone’s reputation), but you must only do it once the presidency in which you had served had ended. There was to be no memoir writing while the president for whom you had worked was still in office.

George Stephanopoulos was the first high-ranking White House official to publish a tell-all while his president was still in office. All Too Human was a scathing look inside the highly dysfunctional Clinton White House, published nine months before Bill and Hillary backed up the moving van and made off with the White House furniture.

Was it salacious? Yup. Was it delightful? You bet. Was it proper? Not really.

Now a new memoir is hitting the bookshelves, written by former Bush press secretary Scott McClellan. In it, he blasts the president for relying on "propaganda" to sell the Iraq war, which he now deems "unnecessary." He attacks the vice president and Secretary Condi Rice for incompetence and arrogance, and goes after the president for being stubbornly attached to certain positions.

Some of these criticisms may have merit. The events we are in the midst of now will one day be history, and the history of the administration will be looked at from many angles and with many sets of eyes.

But for someone who was once the president’s confidante, someone he knew and trusted, someone who gave him the opportunity of a lifetime, to write a tell-all while that history is still being made is not cool. There will be plenty of memoirs coming out of the Bush administration. Most will be cover-your-tushy affairs, as memoirs often are. Some will paint a glossy picture. Some will be critical. But their timing is crucial.

McClellan could have published this book in eight months, when Bush was on his way out the door. But then, he wouldn’t have sold as many books. Publishing now may make him a bit wealthier, but it’s simply not cool to do to your former boss and your president. Not cool at all.

Makes me think that GB&Co will start another war (with Iran?) and in the chaos declare Martial Law and refuse to vacate office. I know. I know. Ridiculous, right? This is the U.S. That can’t happen. But then again whoo-da thought he would stay habeas corpus or ignore Geneva Conventions or invade two foreign countries?

Well, his dad as head of the CIA in Latin America ran similar scenarios over and over again, until they’d managed to destabilize every democratically elected government there…. I always thought he was just practicing for here….

McClellan has every right to publish this book - and make money for his efforts. I can’t say that I respect him for waiting until he was out of office. If things were really that bad why didn’t he resign and inform the American public of these crimes? I don’t consider him a whistle-blower. That is someone who comes out with a truth that damages the higher ups. What damage can this book do to Bush now - he won’t be in office long enough for impeachment. The most this book can do is hurt the Republican party - which in my eyes is good enough right now.

So much has occurred under this Administration, leaving Americans and our way of life vulnerable — presaged by the first Bush Admin. and that of the Clintons — it is unimaginable. I’d like the “think tanks” to focus on THIS instead of proprieties regarding a whistle-blower. Did Chinese Hackers Cause US Blackouts? Posted: 29 May 2008 04:38 PM CDT National Journal’s Shane Harris has reliable, knowledgeable sources who believe that the answer is yes: Computer hackers in China, including those working on behalf of the Chinese government and military, have penetrated deeply into the information systems of U.S. companies and government agencies, stolen proprietary information from American executives in advance of their business meetings in China, and, in a few cases, gained access to electric power plants in the United States, possibly triggering two recent and widespread blackouts in Florida and the Northeast, according to U.S. government officials and computer-security experts. One prominent expert told National Journal he believes that China’s People’s Liberation Army played a role in the power outages. Tim Bennett, the former president of the Cyber Security Industry Alliance, a leading trade group, said that U.S. intelligence officials have told him that the PLA in 2003 gained access to a network that controlled electric power systems serving the northeastern United States. The intelligence officials said that forensic analysis had confirmed the source, Bennett said. “They said that, with confidence, it had been traced back to the PLA.” These officials believe that the intrusion may have precipitated the largest blackout in North American history, which occurred in August of that year. A 9,300-square-mile area, touching Michigan, Ohio, New York, and parts of Canada, lost power; an estimated 50 million people were affected.

Scott McClellan suffers from what I call “conservative insecurity syndrome”. He, like many other weak-minded conservative/republicans before him, can’t take the ill-treatment they receive from the liberal-dominated media—they want to be “liked” by the liberal press. In his case, as with so many others, it is likely because he wants a job. So, to buy their “get out of jail free” card and get lib “street cred”, they are willing to sell their souls to the highest bidder. It is a win/win for McClellan. Not only will he get a cushy “analyst” job at “take your pick” liberal network or cable outlet, he will make a lot of money from his book trashing his former boss, the president, who helped give him his notoriety in the first place. He wants to be become a darling of the press and needs to get these liberal morons to accept him. It won’t be too long before we see this weasel as a Bush Administration “expert” on Olbermann’s tacky show. I never did understand how McClellan got his job in the first place. He was an ineffective, wimpy, feckless Press Secretary. That was even more obvious when McClellan was FIRED and Tony Snow, a truly competent and intelligent individual, replaced him. Anyone who can compromise their principles to be liked/accepted has no integrity. It doesn’t matter what McClellan has to say in his “tell-all” book, because, as he himself stated, he wasn’t “in the loop”.

I am always amused when people keep referring to the “liberal dominated media”. Like these are the folks that got this administration elected in the first place!? Rush, O’reilly, the boys at Fox Network, Cal Thomas, Sean Hannity aren’t the ones dominating the media? The corporations and Rupert Murdoch? Give me a break! By the way, Eleanor, I resent your calling me and the rest of us that are enduring this Train Wreck we call the White House morons.

On second thought, Eleanor, name calling and fear mongering seems to be what you all do best.

Diana T— Unless you are a member of the liberal media, I didn’t call you any names. Renata— I know HOW Scott McClellan got A job in the Bush Administration, it’s how he was given THAT job that is a mystery to me.

McClellen got the job because of cronyism — similar to “Brownie.” Whatever he is or isn’t — the President of the United States routinely hires based upon his own standards/criteria — friends from Texax. Live by the sword, die by the sword. These types are clearly inept — so the question is WHY does George W. Bush retain and promote incompetents??? His incompetence does not, however, denigrate the substance of the testament he provides. Like John Dean during the Watergate episode, he will be ridiculed but history will vindicate him. George W. Bush needs to begin taking responsibility for something.

Eleanor………..Boy do you have guts!!!!! You put it out there even though you know you are going to be hosed by all! I admire your opinion — I admire your spirit. Hang in there! Love your spirit and your post. Nice to see the other side in a good discussion. Peace

Lady Gator— Glad to be of service. I could care less what these people think of me—you on the other hand, now that’s a different story! This Scott McClellan story really bothers me because no one, even liberal commentators, really believes that he is the true author behind this book. Wonder if he will still get the job? Peace to you as well, dear Lady Gator!

Eleanor….I heard a report this AM while driving into work that Scott McClellan sold his soul to George Soros with his book. And, before one of you ladies jump me — don’t know who was the origin of the report. I only heard the last part of it. I wouldn’t be surprised! And, if so — isn’t the Greek the force behind Obama’s trip to the altar? Again, I’m not sure. I, for one, hate “tell all” books. Most are written out of some “You crapped on me so I’m getting even” theme. I agree on asking the question how this inept individual got his position in the first place? More peace

His book was published by the same publisher who published 6 of George Soros books, and also other political books by Vadimir Putin, John Kerry. PublicAffairs’s founder is left-wing editor Peter Osnos. PublicAffairs is owned by Perseus Books, which is owned by Perseus LLC, a merchant bank whose board includes Democrats Richard Holbrooke and Jim Johnson, who is now doing Barack Obama’s vice presidential vetting. One of Perseus’s investment funds, Perseus-Soros Biopharmaceutical, is co-managed with Mr. Soros.” (So Obama was probably in on the book deal too) Here’s PublicAffairs website with the McClellan book and a Soros book side by side on the home page. Ooops. SOMEONE FORGOT TO SEND THEM THE MEMO ABOUT KEEPING DARK CONSPIRACIESAH..IN THE DARK NOT SPLASHED ACROSS THE FRONT PAGE. Here’s the link to US News and World Report story: http://www.usnews.com/usnews/politics/bulletin/bulletin_080530.htm 411: Publishers publish books by TO MAKE MONEY and regularly publish both radical right and left authors if they THINK THEYLL MAKE MONEY. Of course Fox Views is trying to make a nafarious conspiracy out of it….because they want to diminish what McClellan is saying…they always come out with their 24/7 hysterical script and go after their detractors en masse. Big surprise that they’re not just trashing Scott McClellan but have come up with conspiracy theories that George Soros ate Scotty Come Lately’s brain. Right Wing billionaire Richard Mellon Scaife fund backs authors all the time like Apple-Adam Annie. another big surprise. But Fox changes the story by making it a scandal somehow related to Soros…then they can fill up air time talking about him. The left isn’t watching Fox…the ditto-heads are and they’ll buy it the story that Soros someone wrote the book for Scotty, and paid to have it published and distributed. What’s in it for Soros can’t imagine since 75% of the US and most of the world can’t stand GWB isn’t that just throwing a few more bricks on the scale? Don’t think Soros is going to throw money at something with so little return. GWB is a lame duck…why spend $$ on him. If he’s going to spend on anything the smart investment wd be going after McCain. Gee, Scott only got got a $75K advance. Bet he’s happy with the Fox free publicity….it’ll earn the advance back in a week or less…he’s already racking up royalties. Sweet.

Conservative insecurity syndrome” HA! Yeah, it’s tough to be Scotty Come Lately in the Happy Land of racist, union-busting, woman-suppressing, bedroom-peering, rights-scoffing, warmongering, torture-backing, buccaneering, global warming-denying, privatizing, public land-grabbing, Supreme Court stuffing, empire-building, Constitution-shredding raptors. Maybe he can become best buds with McSame whose newly posted video already has nearly 2M hits. Whoa! And such a long time to election day. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GEtZlR3zp4c
