Monica Crowley to Scott McClellan: 'Not Cool' to Kiss 'n' Tell With Bush Still in Office

Editor’s Note: Monica Crowley, Ph.D., is a panelist on The McLaughlin Group, the host of the nationally syndicated radio program, "The Monica Crowley Show," and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

It used to be, back in the day, that those who served their country in high positions — positions of authority and importance — would honor their offices and the office they ultimately served: the presidency. Even when they may have acted dishonorably in office, they kept the dirty linens to themselves. That’s what was expected of them, and that’s what they did.

They didn’t write kiss ‘n’ tells. They didn’t spill the beans. They didn’t tell tales out of school.

They kept their counsel, and went to their graves with the stories that gentlemen simply did not tell.

Good-bye to all that.

The unspoken rule of political memoirs once was: you can write what you’d like, and you can express disagreements and even once-confidential conversations (provided enough time had elapsed so as not to imperil national security secrets or anyone’s reputation), but you must only do it once the presidency in which you had served had ended. There was to be no memoir writing while the president for whom you had worked was still in office.

George Stephanopoulos was the first high-ranking White House official to publish a tell-all while his president was still in office. All Too Human was a scathing look inside the highly dysfunctional Clinton White House, published nine months before Bill and Hillary backed up the moving van and made off with the White House furniture.

Was it salacious? Yup. Was it delightful? You bet. Was it proper? Not really.

Now a new memoir is hitting the bookshelves, written by former Bush press secretary Scott McClellan. In it, he blasts the president for relying on "propaganda" to sell the Iraq war, which he now deems "unnecessary." He attacks the vice president and Secretary Condi Rice for incompetence and arrogance, and goes after the president for being stubbornly attached to certain positions.

Some of these criticisms may have merit. The events we are in the midst of now will one day be history, and the history of the administration will be looked at from many angles and with many sets of eyes.

But for someone who was once the president’s confidante, someone he knew and trusted, someone who gave him the opportunity of a lifetime, to write a tell-all while that history is still being made is not cool. There will be plenty of memoirs coming out of the Bush administration. Most will be cover-your-tushy affairs, as memoirs often are. Some will paint a glossy picture. Some will be critical. But their timing is crucial.

McClellan could have published this book in eight months, when Bush was on his way out the door. But then, he wouldn’t have sold as many books. Publishing now may make him a bit wealthier, but it’s simply not cool to do to your former boss and your president. Not cool at all.

My feeling is that the truth should be told sooner not later. After 911 the American people were stunned by what happened. The plan to invade Iraq was well orchestrated from the stand point of convincing people that it was the appropriate thing to do. I heard Rumsfield say that the decision was made to go into Iraq because Afganistan didn’t have “good targets”. The person/persons that devised the plan were brilliant, except for the fact that it was not well thought out beyond the initial invasion. They were able to convince Colin Powell so that he would present the information to the American people, who would be more believable than he ?

It is incredible what laser vision republican commentators have when they feel one of their own is being attacked. Where was their loyalty to the office, and their good manners when when Clintons sexual dalliances were smeared over every form of media that existed. Oh, and how cool was it to have his teen-aged daughter face daily the twists and turns of her father’s (a sitting President) genitals.

Chef Z — I’m sure his teen-aged daughter had heard it all before. After all, it all started way back when he was Gov. of Arkansas and just escalated when he became “First Man”. There were women lined up and some we will never hear from. And, after his affair with Monica I’m sure she heard the blasting he received from her mom regarding same. She has handled the whole situtation quite well. Is, by far, the better of the three. Good luck to her. She appears to have a good head on her shoulders.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jeff-cohen/mcclellan-and-his-media-c_b_104… …No sooner had Bush’s ex-press secretary (now author) Scott McClellan accused President Bush and his former collaborators of misleading our country into Iraq than the squeals of protest turned into a mighty roar. I’m not talking about the vitriol directed at him by former White House colleagues like Karl Rove and Ari Fleischer. I’m talking about McClellan’s other war collaborators: the movers and shakers in corporate media. The people McClellan refers to in his book as “deferential, complicit enablers” of Bush administration war propaganda. One after another, news stars defended themselves with the tired old myth that no one doubted the Iraq WMD claims at the time. The yarn about hindsight being 20/20 was served up more times than a Rev. Wright clip on Fox News. Katie Couric, whose coverage on CBS of the Iraq troop surge has been almost fawning, was one of the few stars to be candid about pre-invasion coverage, saying days ago, “I think it’s one of the most embarrassing chapters in American journalism.” She spoke of “pressure” from corporate management, not just Team Bush, to “really squash any dissent.” Then a co-host of NBC Today, she says network brass criticized her for challenging the administration. NBC execs apparently didn’t complain when — two weeks into the invasion — Couric thanked a Navy commander for coming on the show, adding, “And I just want you to know, I think Navy SEALs rock!” This is a glorious moment for the American public. We can finally see those who abandoned reporting for cheerleading and flag-waving and cheap ratings having to squirm over their role in sending other parents’ kids into Iraq. I say “other parents’ kids” because I never met any bigwig among those I worked with in TV news who had kids in the armed forces. …

PINK ROSE, you go gal! Except for your bit about Sex and The City. I need my escapism and my dressed-up galfriends. It is a HOOT that the neo-con brainwashed think books like McClellan’s are betrayals! Hey, the BETRAYALS came FROM this administration! Scott McClellan was Never in a position to Stop This War! What a lie to say so! And Kiss and Tell is about private matters the Public has no Need To Know. THIS matter of the War in Iraq belongs to the whole planet, especially including all of the unfortunate nations invited to join us in it. and every American citizen has a Perfect right to know every tiny, tiny detail! Are the neo-cons against the Freedom of Speech guarantee? Well, if Scott McCleellan is guilty of not playing nice with little Georgie in the White House, what about your love of that potty-mouthed liar Rush Limbaugh, who still pollutes our air waves?

Mary P. You listen to Rush Limbaugh? Wow, I listen to him now and then. Don’t always agree with his statements. However, I’ve never thought he was “potty-mouthed”. Perhaps your definition of “potty” is different than mine.

I think McClellan and Powell were victims of intimidation. We don’t know what pressure the men were under to smile and make nice. Even if it was an ulterior motive to time the book to damage the republican campaign, who cares? It’s out. Not that we haven’t known in our hearts all we suspected was true. We all know Gore won in 2000 and Kerry won in 2004. Bush doesn’t belong in the White House, he belongs in a road house with his Peterbilt parked outside. He probably couldn’t even do that job well. It will all come out some day, but by then maybe the Patriot Act will be gone and we can pick up our phones and speak freely again, and display dissenting bumper stickers and we’ll know our votes will really count. If this book and others that hopefully will come do anything at all to let in the light, in the words of History’s Murderous Menace, “Bring It On!”

The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”—Edmund Burke How did we let this happen? Shame on all of us.

Yes, Beth. I take that quite seriously and am very much behind what you said. Shame on all of us… BTW, that is one of my favorite quotes!

Beth willis….don’t include me in the collective shame….I’m quite proud of all I’ve done to stand for and ACT for humanity at great cost to me instead of being one of the stupid sheep who followed the Bush Cabal over the cliff. Anyone who is a bush supporter is as dumb/tasteless/ ignorant as they get.

Bravo or brava since you remain nameless ,but your efforts are duly noted. A wide chasm divides Bush supporters and those of us who knew even prior to his governorship that a bird from anyone’s hand is worthy of this Bush He utilized his father’s “Willie Horton” team to sneaky- trick Ann Richards out of the state house . Rove and his cohorts channeled Sellers’ Chauncy from”Being There” to put him in office…and the rest is, as we say, scandal. To dismiss in hindsight that “Anyone who is a bush supporter is as dumb/ tasteless/ignorant as it gets” seems far too simplistice for the task ahead in November. This rhetoric is left over from the previous two campaingns, appealing to dismissing the opposition as though they lack the wherewithall to understand facts. Danger always exists in simplistic thinking.

Actually Beth, it isn’t simplistic. all you have to do is look at the facts and the results and if a person can support this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0TnqUlB4Gg&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YjXPOxnu2N8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B1U7qgudyww&feature=related I repeat….the people on those videos laughing supporters of Bush Inc, and those in their crazy cabal, are as ignorant, classless, and tasteless as it gets. There are 6.6 B people on the planet and they are among the most contemptible. I hope they enjoy their hot perch in hell for supporting organized murder of over a million innocent people for oil. The GOP wrote the game rules when the Tom Delay/The Heritage Foundation wrote and distributed it around the US to GOP activist which included: “We are not going to debate liberals but use Leninist tactics to wipe them off the face of this Earth.” I like Arianna and her new book “Right is Wrong”as she says..the Right has allowed the lunatic fringe to hijack their party and the nation and our Constitution etc. I think she is great. She and Obama are the future. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XAgReDssHFY I have nothing but total contempt for the GOP except the few smart ones like Senator Chuck Hagel.
