Monica Crowley: There's a Fine Line Between 'Maverick' and 'Ass'

Editor’s Note: Monica Crowley, Ph.D., is a panelist on The McLaughlin Group, the host of the nationally syndicated radio program "The Monica Crowley Show" and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

There’s a fine line between "maverick" and "ass." On Friday, John McCain crossed that line right into ass-dom. At a campaign rally, McCain stood in front of his own supporters and told them Barack Obama isn’t so bad. We need not fear an Obama presidency, he said. After all, Obama is a "decent" man. McCain went on to say he still believes he’d be the better president.

Thanks, Mac. How about a cocktail with that grenade you just blew up in our faces?

McCain understandably — and justifiably — got booed by those at his rally. They were there to support him. To cheer him on. To buoy him at a time of sinking poll numbers. To give him the energy to fight on.

What they got in return was a suggestion from their guy that it was OK to vote for the other guy.

Well, Sen. McCain: You may not be angry, but we are. You may not be upset that Obama is about to walk away with this election, but we are. You may not be concerned that ACORN is making off with stuffed ballot boxes, but we are. You may not be teed off about the economic mess, but we are. You may not be upset about America’s enemies — from Russia to Iran to North Korea — reasserting themselves, but we are. You may think an Obama presidency won’t be "scary," but we do.

You may be willing to toss in the towel, but we aren’t.

Senator: You’ve got three weeks to turn this sucker around. Three weeks to remind us how "scary" an Obama presidency will be: from appeasing our enemies to filling three Supreme Court vacancies to taxing us to death and killing whatever’s left of the economy.

Maybe that doesn’t scare you, but it scares us to pieces.

We are fighting for you. We expect you to do the bare minimum in your own fight. And right now, you’re not even doing that.

Thank you, Countrywoman, I always read what you post, too. I think we’re fellow Northwesterners. I am going to look at the site you posted and educate myself. And the pic is of my Tibetan Terrier, Remy. He is the light of my life and a very cheeky monkey.

As dog-mama to two also-cheeky tenacious (Silky) terriers, (and their calm sensible German Shepherd sister) I can totally relate to that “light” concept. Family! And that’s affirmative re location, we live in the coastal foothills of Northwest Oregon. Our time zone posts on an East coast clock….makes us look like real night owls. :) I forgot to mention that the Troll/Flamer website was brought to my attention by another WowSister, and I am forever in her debt.
+~~ to you and Remy the adorable.

Oh, snap! Thanks, Countrywoman! I ‘m so totally bookmaking this site, right now. Some people really make me wanna pull every last hair outta my head. I try to be courteous back to them, funny, reason with them, every approach I can think of, to get them to stop being jerks and try to be more reasonable with their comments. In reality, I’d love to throttle them. Maybe worse. I need to go to bed. I’m getting cranky. :/

Countrywoman, Interesting site……………thanks for the link. We’ve had a few of that type on this site haven’t we. It’s true, the best way is to ignore.

M L: … Governor Palin’s parents … From what I’ve seen, Gov. Palin’s parents are a bit elderly. These three young children (Trig, Piper, Willow) are so much better off with their young parents. What a wonderful adventure for these kids. Not absolutely sure, but I think Gov. Palin nurses Trig, so he has to be nearby all the time.

Oh, you don’t make a big deal out of photoshopping the pic of the little daughter changing it to the finger. Someone did that to an under aged girl. But you question Palin’s parenting skills. Well, what I see is her children seem very happy,

Barbara, if you look back, I was the one who pointed out that the picture was photoshopped and yes, I think that is deplorable use of an underaged child.

M L, Yes, I saw that, thanks. That was a good catch. How did you ever find it?

Gov. Palin’s parenting skills are fine. Her children are beautiful and healthy. I love the charming 7-year old, Piper, who is always upstaging her mother by wanting to be beside her. The camera crew seems to love her also as they are always including her in their shots, if they can.

Why are you afraid of Obama? It’s people like you that spread hate and discontent. I don’t want McCain or Palin in office but I wouldn’t say I’m afraid of them. “Scary” sounds so prejudice to me. You’re just pissed because Obama is winning in the polls. However, if anything is “Scary” in this election, or a reason to “Be afraid” it’s Sarah Palin being vice-president of this country! So you keep being afraid of the “scary” Obama. Then when he’s president and turning this country around, I’ll have you over for dinner, with crow on the menu.

Ms. Crowley, have you ever read the book, “Bloodthirsty B*s and Pious Pimps of Power”? It is a superb reflection on the direction of the Republican party. This is not a veiled insult to the author, merely an eye-opening book recommendation.

Carol, Oh My God………. ……. These are the kind of people we should be afraid of. I’ll bet she thought Bush was wonderful too. This kind of ignorance is what scares me.
