More Drama for Obama? Territorial Tussle Over Clinton’s Security

She hasn’t yet been officially named secretary of state, but Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, is already causing a bit of something Washington seems to thrive on – turf war.

Clinton’s war is between her Secret Service security detail – assigned to her for life as a former First Lady – and the State department’s Diplomatic Security Service, which is in charge of protecting agency officials, including the secretary of state. It seems that everybody wants a piece of her.

The Huffington Post reports that informal discussions have begun to resolve which security service will serve the nation’s top diplomat-to-be. Talks reportedly are honing in on who will protect her at home and abroad, and who will have the final say in planning her security. Officials at the Secret Service and Diplomatic Security acknowledge that Clinton’s nomination would create unprecedented logistical and jurisdictional hurdles.

It’s not every secretary of state who has a former leader of the free world as her spouse.

Adding to the confusion is the fact that her husband, former President Bill Clinton, may often accompany her on overseas trips. He has his own Secret Service detail.

Clinton is expected to be named to that post by President-elect Barack Obama early next week, when he announces the rest of his national security team.

sounds like a line in the budget issue. Clinton’s security is already handled. No need to revisit. Shift the Diplomatic team to some of the newly created economic and health cabinet posts. they’re gonna need it.

Look back in History………..(with the exception of President Carter) What other past President and First Lady have been so willing and able to continue giving their Lives and Talents to the Country they love. The Clintons are a blessing to this Country. They are beloved around the World. I for one am very proud of our Former President and First Lady and grateful For their devotion to all Americans. If Hillary is chosen for Secretary of State she’ll be a great one.

Sounds sort of like another case of media driven drama to me. If there is a conflict it will be worked out and there’s no need for it to even be reported and blown out of proportion so that the media can keep the Obama/Clinton hype going.

What would make you think you know that? Just because Bill Clinton strays doesn’t mean he isn’t attentive at home. There are only two people who can know that private info, and I doubt if either of them post in this website.

This is drama? No!! It is just a matter of logistics as others have pointed out. Hillary cannot be blamed for this although some here are trying to do that. And, after 911, I’m surprised to hear different agencies still cannot work together. Maybe they should do what the old movie studios did with their stars—they lent them out to other studios. So these agents can work for the State Department at their regular salary until her tenure ends.

It is logistics and if Ms. Clinton chooses to, it is a fairly simple matter to solve. Presidents and former presidents and their families receive a very specifically defined type of protection from the Secret Service. With Mrs. Clinton moving to the State Dept, which has its own security forces, there will be a conflict over “who has jurisdiction”. Let Mrs. Clinton define her needs and concerns, and go from there. Generally, a permanent team is assigned to a former president’s family, at least that was my understanding. So she might be comfortable with people she has known for several years already who know her. There was a very funny movie with Shirley Maclaine and Nick Cage which was a fairly accurate portrayal of what goes on. My husband used to work presidential protection with the Secret Service.

Well, it is quite easy really. Just flip a coin, name one team her security team, then the other team her security team overseeing the security team, and overseeing the security team of President Clinton. See? How easy is that? Right! lol Actually, if all things are fairly equal, let Hillary decide who will be her security team, and maybe mix them up a bit between teams. … Just another one of those devilish moments which overcome me, on this site… grin

Marjorie, Elaine, my other friends too numerous to mention, I must say my goodbyes. I am now banished from WoW for whatever reason. My presumption is the women who created this website are intolerant of American Indians. I really enjoyed the company of all, had lots of fun and have learned WoW is quite intolerant and does not welcome diverse opinions. achukma hoke, yakoke! It is good, thank you!
