More Drama for Obama? Territorial Tussle Over Clinton’s Security

She hasn’t yet been officially named secretary of state, but Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, is already causing a bit of something Washington seems to thrive on – turf war.
Clinton’s war is between her Secret Service security detail – assigned to her for life as a former First Lady – and the State department’s Diplomatic Security Service, which is in charge of protecting agency officials, including the secretary of state. It seems that everybody wants a piece of her.
The Huffington Post reports that informal discussions have begun to resolve which security service will serve the nation’s top diplomat-to-be. Talks reportedly are honing in on who will protect her at home and abroad, and who will have the final say in planning her security. Officials at the Secret Service and Diplomatic Security acknowledge that Clinton’s nomination would create unprecedented logistical and jurisdictional hurdles.
It’s not every secretary of state who has a former leader of the free world as her spouse.
Adding to the confusion is the fact that her husband, former President Bill Clinton, may often accompany her on overseas trips. He has his own Secret Service detail.
Clinton is expected to be named to that post by President-elect Barack
Obama early next week, when he announces the rest of his national
security team.
