Mort Zuckerman and Gloria Steinem Do Ex-Couples Stand-up at Kate Winslet Luncheon
The Plaza Hotel’s recently renovated Oak Room was the scene today for a luncheon celebrating Kate Winslet for her Oscar-nominated role in "The Reader." Due to Elie Wiesel’s unexpected absence, Mort Zuckerman was called in at the last minute to take his place alongside his former flame, Gloria Steinem, for the introductions.
Zuckerman, remarking that he was a last-minute replacement for Wiesel, said that he was there because he "was the next Jew in Peggy Siegal’s phone book" and, as the film deals in matters of guilt, that his entire life is about being "above guilt."
Gloria Steinem, looking smashing one month before her 75th birthday, quipped back to Zuckerman that she was "only half-Jewish … but twice as guilty."
The event was a private luncheon for academy voters and was put on by Harvey Weinstein in support of the film that many say represents the Weinstein Company’s best chance at an Oscar this year.
