Octuplet Mother Nadya Suleman Pushes Story on Oprah

Here’s one way to pay for all those diapers! Nadya Suleman, the 33-year-old mother of six who last week birthed octuplets, reportedly wants Oprah Winfrey or Diane Sawyer to shell out $2 million for an interview — and eventually she wants to earn big bucks as a talking head on television as an authority on child care.

Oprah, Diane and Katie may, in fact, be lining up to interview the baby-crazed mama, but apparently no one’s told her that journalists don’t typically pay for interviews. And after all the news that’s come out about Suleman, it’s even less likely.

What’s raising all those eyebrows? First of all, some are concerned that Suleman is single. She already has six children under the age of seven and has no visible means of support. Her parents, Angela and Ed Suleman, bought her a two-bedroom house in March 2007, but after they went bust, they moved in with her and the kids. Even her mother has run out of patience, saying "[She] is not evil, but she is obsessed with children. She loves children, she is very good with children, but obviously she overdid herself." Talk about an understatement!

Then there are the medical issues. Why did doctors transfer eight embryos in the first place? The American Society for Reproductive Medicine frowns upon implanting more than two or three embryos at a time and has started an investigation into the case. The group’s president, R. Dale McClure, remarked:

At this point, we do not know the circumstances surrounding the conception of these children and what, if any, medical treatments were involved. If this resulted from an IVF treatment, we can say that transferring eight embryos in an IVF cycle is well beyond our guidelines.

One thing we know for sure: having a brood of 14 kids under the age of seven definitely will make her either a child-care expert, or it will drive her very crazy very quickly.

Ok is this woman nuts or what? This would be one show that I would be glad to watch The Wiggles instead…I truly hope no one gives this lady money for her story…Does this lady have a job? Are we the American people taking care of her and her kids besides her parents? I feel for the kids who will always grow up with a cloud over them.

So….this person will use her children for $$, a book and her 15 minutes of fame on Oprah and Larry King. I may as will be up front with you all; this story has disturbed me and disgusted me from the get go. This woman is unbalanced, obviously, but the doctors? Why would they be a part of something like this? For their 15 minutes of fame?

I mostly agree here. My first thought was this was a couple desperate for children and made an ethical decision to keep all the fertilized eggs. But then all the doctors came out stating that eight is not normal for IVF… At that point I started to find this story disturbing…then the news that she has 6 other children! Living with her parents! And more! This story gets more bizarre and disturbing everyday. What is going on???

OMG…now this is a little nuts. I just went to ‘google news’ for more on this story as this is the first I’ve paid attention to it. I used search terms ‘octuplet mother’ and the ‘lead news’ story at this time (7:37PM PST) is this wOw thread! How bizarre is that?!

C Hardy: Ok is this woman nuts or what? I just knew this was going to be all about money… and I wonder if her doctor isn’t part of it. This sort of thing should get no encouragement from the media. As I’ve noted on another thread, it is inhuman to subject eight little lives to the perils of premature birth.

C Hardy: I think I prefer someone pay for her story………………..rather than, as you said :we the American people taking care of her and her kids. If she makes alot of money, then she can certainly afford a larger house and help for her children. Don’t you agree??

As long as it provides for the children and not pay for her having more children!!!

Irish: Yes and No…ugh, I am conflicted about this. What conflicts me is this: I suspect that this is what “MOM” (and boy do I use that word loosely) had planned all along. Suleman probably watched all the reality TV shows about various families with multiples and figured out the ‘cash cow’ potential if she had multiples of her own.

You need to read my post. (2/8/09 5:32 am) I think “…[sic] [you] pay for her story…”. Besides “…we the American people…” far outnumber you and Nadya. Therefore, I’m sure you would make more friends if you and Nadya took care of us!

She’ll probably get her wish too. This story is getting more and more disturbing.

IVF is not cheap. My question is where did she find the money for this procedure and was she thinking of making money off of these babies putting them for adoption for few bucks??? The doctor should be investigated for malpractice. IVF should only be done when absolutely necessary.

Thank you, Nilgun. That was my question also. How much does IVF cost? The doctors who let her do this need to be brought into question and their licenses suspended until more is found out about the particulars of this case. I put them in the same category as the plastic surgeons who worked on Michael Jackson long after it was obvious they were caving his face in and he was unbalanced.

Last I heard she won’t reveal the doctor. No reputable doctor would do IVFs with eight embryos! They generally place 2-3 at a time, no more. Also, her previous 6 were all implanted as well. She’s got a doc who’s using her as a guinea pig, my guess, and is paying this woman money to have these pregnancies. Find the doc and take the license away!

I don’t think she used medical assistance. I think she went to Mexico and got one of the fertility drugs used to induce multiple eggs to “ripen” for ovulation. The drugs are intended to be self administered as IM injections. Once she took the drug, she simply made sure she’d get “fertilized” the old fashioned way. It would be interesting to do DNA testing to see if all 8 have the same father.
