Is a New Hymen the New Botox? Among Some Muslim Women, the Answer Is Yes

Cosmetic surgery for hymen restoration is becoming more and more popular in European cities where otherwise Westernized, jeans-wearing young Muslim women face the need to become "virgins" before getting married. Some doctors in European cities with larger Muslim populations such as Paris and Frankfurt find they are doing two to four of these operations a week.

The procedure, called a hymenoplasty, is a restoration of the internal tissue that usually "breaks" during a woman’s first sexual encounter. Traditionally in Muslim culture, the virginity of the bride is of great importance to the groom and the groom’s family.

"In my culture, not to be a virgin is to be dirt," a young European Muslim student told The New York Times.

At a time when women in America are debating whether the failure of Hillary Clinton is based on some lingering glass ceiling, it is amazing to hear how complex the issues of love and sex are in cultures so different from ours.

Thank you Ms. Esther, I will add Marjane Satrapi’s Threads to my reading and I must say my reading list is growing and growing and I like that! I don’t understand this surgery and must do some research to get a better handle on what I just read. Yep, you guessed I am off to the bat cave once again! I LOVE THIS SITE!

I have a request …. If anyone has any used books for me to read would you please gather them together and send them to me? I promise to read as many as I can and I will pay for shipping. Also, I promise to lend them out to other women in my position that would like to improve themselves. I would like the topics of the books to be about self discovery, feminism, stories about famous women in history and books of that nature. You say, go to the library …. yes, I know … M and I lost three books and we can’t pay the $120.00 fees they want and all the libraries are connected by the net and they won’t let us have any books. I know, it is always something with me! LOL! Anyways, please email me at kFeinNicholson@yahoo.com I will share my address with you and remember I will pay for shipping.

This is not my business—but why not pay the library fine instead of shipping. I love libraries…so much easier on everyone. I can’t read novels anymore, so I get some wonderful young actors and narrators to read them to me (books on CD). “My stories.” Better than TV!

Ms. Star, I don’t own a car. Yeah, that does sound more logical to pay the library … thank you for the suggestion! And I should have said I will try to pay for shipping. I get about $800 a month social security and I am actively looking for a virtual workplace position as we speak. Did you get my reply under the cosmetic surgery thread? I said, I thought you were beautiful!

Star, I’m sad that you can’t read books but thank heaven for audio books, eh? It’s a whole different thing… Lisa, here’s an idea for you and others: http://www.paperbackswap.com/index.php This is an organization of folks who swap books back and forth for the cost of postage. I think it’s a great group.

Dear Frau, Yes, I will pay up … I have no intention of “stiffing” the my local library nor do I wish to be un-supportive of my local library … And again, THANK YOU for the “pay up” reminder.

I don’t understand this. Have you read the threads which would have explained that Lisa has an autistic son and no money? Of course she could afford a few dollars postage but not $120 in fines. Lisa, what library do you owe the money to? Address and phone number, if possible. Thanks, Mugs

I once read that the intelligence of a country is measured by how it treats women. When the rules of behavior and need to be a virgin or”be treated like dirt” are so different between men and women, intelligence flies out the window. I find this so incredibly sad.

I agree with you and I absolutely can’t fathom religion that requires covering yourself or wigs or any of the external trappings that set people apart. Religion should be carried in your heart (or non-religion).There’s so much I don’t get. Tattoos for one.Fatwahs etc. They all go under the big WHY????? Lois

That sounds really, really painful! Maybe Muslim men need a new mind-think or re-education about reality. So women need to be virgins but not necessarily the men? if they like to pop things so much, give then some bubble wrap!!
