My Robbery Drama: Chapter Three

Zoe Buckman

For those of you who have followed my saga of the cat burglar who broke into my New York City apartment last month, there’s good news, and then not so good news.

They caught him! An undercover informant tipped off the cops, who found him, and put him in the clink. There was much celebrating, though none of the stolen items were found.

While the cat was behind bars, four witnesses, all construction workers who are repairing our building, were brought in for a line up. Two picked him out without any doubt. But, alas, two did not. That’s when the case turned sour. A prosecutor from the District Attorney’s office called us two nights ago. She felt they didn’t have enough to go forward. They had to let him go.

The case is not entirely closed. One of the construction workers had left his hard hat up on the roof that day during his coffee break. The cat put it on as part of his disguise, and then left it behind. The Crime Scene Unit forensic team is still trying to recover some DNA. That’s already taken weeks. And could take more weeks.

That means: forget any chance of finding my jewelry.

I’ve been scouring eBay like a forlorn lover. If you ever see a watch with 60 MINUTES on the face, e-mail me.

I hear you on grieving for “things” that mean something. They have memories attached to them. Likewise I love checking out your jewelry on 60 minutes. Your hair too. And of course your line of questioning! Good luck on solving this and keep us posted! Will we be watching this on a future Law and Order?

Leslie, to be invaded and loose treasured things seemed like a little death when it happened to me. Of course that invoked some grieving but of course no one brought cake and casseroles. It still hurt none-the-less but it gets better over time. I hope they find some DNA on that hat and nail that guy if he is guilty! I do love your work on 60 minutes. It is a pleasure to see you draw out your interviewee.

Leslie, you look so beautiful in your photo. Unfortunately I am not a huge fan of your more “dangly” earrings. They make your neck look creppy. Try wearing them with a turtle neck. Just a suggestion. P.S. I am a robbery victim, an awful experience.

Yvonne Angelastro I just read about your watch being stolen and I can empathize. When Diana and Charles got married, I was in the UK. I bought a watch from Mappin and Webb, the jewelers to Her Royal Highness. The watch had Diana’s and Charles’ faces on the face of the watch. A few years ago,I had electrical work done in my house and had left the watch on my bureau. I forgot that I had left it there. The watch was stolen. I still have the case in which it came. I still grieve when I remember it. I know that I will never see it again It was not insured. I hope that you will find yours. I do know the awful feeling. Good luck!

Burglary is like being molested. You feel violated even if they took the most minor things. I am so sorry for you. I am thankful he did not take your life or your housekeeper. You still have memories connected to those things that is a good thing. I hope you find peace soon Lesley! Hugs! PS you might pray to St. Anthony of Padua. He is the patron saint of lost and stolen things. If anyone can get them back for you he can! Look him up on the internet for more info if you do not know of him. He really works! http://www.americancatholic.org/Features/Anthony/0-86716-202-3_np.asp

My heart breaks you and for this terrible feeling of violation, and even though these are “just things,” the loss is compounded by the thievery. I stored belongings in a NYC storage place, part of a national chain (Easy Space Storage), and someone entered the unit with a metal detector, found my 20+ year collection of Southwest Native American jewelry and stole it. I was devastated, as I had collected these with great care from artist families I knew. The company was horrible, said I took a risk by storing my things, and would not even return calls until I notified the police. I still grieve for these lovely things, and feel rage at the storage company.

Even a simple web cam can do a good job on recording a burglar, not to mention more expensive security systems. I use web cab that can detect motion. It’s amazing how burglars strike whenever they see an opportunity. Now, when the vacation time is coming I took an extra step to make my home, and not only car secure. I have purchased a CD with burglar deterrent sounds, which I play every day in my apartment when I leave it for work. And I will play it non stop when I go on vacation. The sound quality is OK, nothing spectacular, but since you are listening to it through the closed door, it works great. Web site is: www.DeterrentSounds.com. Another good site is www.audioguard.com.
